Stayed at this hotel a couple of months back in the room call straits eclectic. Absolutely love the room! The room has a huge amazing bathroom/toilet. And the toiletries was not the ordinary hotel provided type of toiletries instead they use Crabtree and Evelyn.
The breakfast was lovely, set at the garden (you have an option not to sit at the garden as well). The room came with king size bed, flat screen tv, hair dryer, player where you can plug your iPod/iPhone to play music from your device and it charges it as well. The deco of the room is lovely. Basically, it's the type of room where you don't want to get out from. Perfect to just laze around whole day.
It's quiet and very peaceful. At night (not so sure what time) the main gate will be lock. Don't worry, because there is a bell and you can just pull the rope outside the gate to give the bell a ring and the guard will unlock the gate provided you show him your room key (an assurance for the guard to know you are one of the guest I suppose).
23 love lane is an ideal place for couples. If you feel like having some street food, you can walk down to chulia street which is like 5 mins walk (or less) and 24 hours convenient stores too. Not only that, buses go through chulia street. And for those who plan to get visa/tours/rent a bike/books, can just walk to chulia street to get it sorted. (chulia street is basically the backpackers hood).
Bare in mind that 23 love lane can be a little pricy but totally worth to spend on if you want to completely shut your brain from work etc and spend quiet and quality time by yourself or with your love ones.

23 Love Lane is a charming little abode with good service and a calming ambiance.

We stayed in the indian shophouse room (2 storeys) which was of a good size for 4 persons to share. The bathrooms were well done up with lots of space (and branded toiletries)!

At night, a famous food street is just 5 mins walk down the road!

For the money, you probably couldn't get much better in Penang. :)

Just had a fantastic stay at 23 Love Lane! It is located among backpackers' hostels, lending the area a bit of edginess in the sedating penang heat. The busy-ness of Georgetown was left behind once we walked through the gates. We stayed in the Straits Eclectic room, which was very comfortable and felt very private even though it is located near the main lobby area.

The communal area is well-maintained and it’s very peaceful to just sit and enjoy the day in the beautiful garden. The best part of it is, there is free afternoon tea (local delights!) served around 4pm. We even got to taste the famous teochew cendol without having to queue for it!!! If you love your food, the hotel is also within walking distance of very good wanton noodles (opens from 8pm onwards) at Lebuh Chulia, near Lebuh Carnarvon. Also try the roast chicken rice at Kedai Kopi Thew Chik Café along Lebuh Chulia for lunch. Line Clear Nasi Kandar and claypot Briyani at Kapitan are also a skip away from the hotel.

Service was also amazing as many other reviewers have mentioned. Its service with sincerity, which really set this place apart from other hotels we have stayed at. I must really commend Mr Fauzi and Mr Nelson for making our stay so comfortable. We felt right at home. Staff at the restaurant was also very kind and helpful. We came back to the hotel one night with takeaway food and drinks and they provided us with plates and cutlery. However, there were times when other staff was not quite sure when we asked about prices of taxi rides etc. One minor thing that can be improved is the central controller in our room for the lights/fans. It doesn’t work very well all the time and given the generous size of the room, i had to run around quite abit to off the lights.

We highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay here again!

Only booked this place 3 days before arrival. had only 10 minutes to pick a hotel from Tripadvisor and this was the best place we had in our 4 weeks in Malaysia.
People are very, very friendly. Breakfast is great, you can just order what you like and each day they have another local speciality.
Our room was the Indian Shophouse; a duplex house with a big room downstairs with an enormous bathroom and a another room on the mezzanine floor, also with a bathroom.
You can sit outside in the garden, enjoy an afternoon tea and fall asleep in the lounge chairs.
The B&B is in the middle of Georgetown.

very friendly staff and incredible cozzines. the staff made us fell right at home Imedieatly for the two nights we were there. We were even able to change rooms to accommodate an extra person that joined our group and the manager didn't even charge us. if your going to Penang and want a B&B with lots of character and charm and an all star staff to boot, the Lovelane 23 is your place.

We'd read about 23 Love Lane and wanted to be in the centre of town; little did we know that being there would allow us to nosh non-stop, day or night, as we visited. From the moment we arrived, almost at midnight, to the morning we left, Mr Fauzi and his team took incredibly good care of us -- leading us to the food stalls open at all hours, booking vehicles for us, suggesting areas to explore for the best cendol, and being hospitable as could be when three friends we were meeting up with showed up for tea.

We stayed in the two Jack Roof Annex rooms which were both incredibly comfortable, beautifully designed, and right in the middle of the garden. Breakfast in their new shophouse restaurant was gorgeous: the local specialty, roti canai, perfect, one day, and nasi lemak, brought in from where they said the best in Georgetown was made, the next. Accompanying the main breakfast dishes were plates of supremely fresh fruit, fresh juice, Dilmah tea or local coffee, and...whatever else your heart desired. Mr Fauzi informed us that they would not be happy unless we gained at least two kilos on this trip and they certainly did their best to make their wish come true. Locals joke that they eat six meals a day, and they are not kidding. But it's all so delicious!

The common spaces and gardens at 23 Love Lane are immaculately maintained, with great reading material, including the plans submitted to UNESCO to meet their heritage restoration requirements. Fascinating reading.

We felt very welcome at 23 Love Lane and are already plotting a return trip.

Room Tip: For maximum quiet, aim for a room that doesn't give to the street: the green Jack Roof Annex and...

We booked 23,LoveLane on the basis of the website and location and it delivered all that and more. We stayed 11-16 July 2012, probably overlapping with the 'Hidden Gem' reviewers. We totally endorse everything said in that review. All we would add is that a stay in Georgetown is highly recommended esp if you are passionate about experiencing World Heritage sites (e.g New Orleans, Havana Cuba). There could be no better base for that experience than 23, LoveLane.
