We came to Campbell House with high expectations, having read the many glowing reviews here. And we ended up finding it terribly difficult to leave; we still yearn for the luxury of having our room always stocked with refreshing ice tea and water, with our beautiful antique mother-of-pearl opium bed made up and curtains drawn almost every time we came back in the evening from our long walks under the hot sun around Georgetown.

Every design touch, every gesture was thoughtful -- from the welcome chat filled with recommendations by the genial Kumar at the front desk, right down to the little cake/biscuit placed on our mini-bar every evening (if anything, I wish they had introduced some of the local pastries like tau sar piah for this, though it is undoubtedly already above and beyond what one would normally get). Service was so impeccable that we almost forgot we weren't staying at the Ritz-Carlton. Staff was always helpful, friendly and prompt, that even the security guard made the effort to take a jug of water and bring it up to our room when we requested some past the service hours (till 11pm - when our friendly hosts go home to rest).

It took us some time to decide which room to book, but we're so glad we picked Opium. I was a little worried the opium Queen-size bed would be a little small, but it turned out to be perfect for us. And of course, the bathtub was a huge plus! We ended up soaking almost every afternoon to escape the heat. The ceiling was high, and there was so much space we felt like royals in our regal chamber. There are many boutique hotels that seem to put form over function -- antique clawfoot bath but poor water flow, and so on -- but Campbell House certainly is of a whole different class. I was personally impressed by how well the layout of the room worked for us -- indeed a testament to the careful thought put into selecting every single piece of furniture, every single draping and carpeting.

The experience did not stop there. Like most of the other reviewers, I must say that the (complimentary) breakfast here is way too good, so good we had to skip a few items to reserve space for the wonderful street food that we came to Penang for. Again, every breakfast, we were served like royals. The fruit platter came as soon as we were seated, and our order of beverage (all sorts of coffee, tea, or juices) was then taken. Then came the individual mini-pot of yoghurt; a whole basket of croissants, whole-grain, white toast - served with butter and jams; a choice of muesli or granola served with yoghurt or milk. After all that, we were asked to choose from a list of hot eggs dishes -- omelette, eggs benedict, and more. The hot breakfast could often do with slightly better presentation, but the taste made up for it. In short, you can forget about sub-par buffet breakfasts; at Campbell House, you should only expect top-quality personalised breakfast full of choices fit for a royal. And to think that we paid but a fraction of what many 'boutique' and diamond-starred hotels would charge.

Till the last hour of our stay (they very kindly gave us a late check-out till 2pm), we were wishing we could spend yet another day in Penang's beautiful streets, eating dim sum and affordable street food around Campbell Street, only to return to our oasis at Campbell House. To everyone at Campbell House, your thoughtful dedication to good service has been genuinely inspiring, so thank you and keep up the good work. We hope to return sooner rather than later.

Room Tip: Opium room's clawfoot bath is a true place of refuge from the heat of Penang.

What a find! Right in the heart of the World Heritage City, Georgetown on Penang Island, surrounded by two-storey 1880s terraces, tin shacks (usually great eating houses) and superb old Chinese mansions, Campbell House is a renovation done with taste and grace.
Small enough to be intimate but large enough to have spacious bedrooms done out in Malay style, this hotel also brims with satisfied travellers who are getting happy, convivial service.
The hotel restaurant is Italian and pricey (if you're missing "home") but just walk around the surrounding blocks, past the busy rickshaws and the dodging motorbikes, and there are Indian, Malay and Chinese meals that are immensely cheap, totally fresh and brimming with flavour.
After four days, my partner and I didn't want to leave. Dear Penang: stay as you are! Peter

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed the creativity and decor of the Campbell House. The staff are extremely helpful and spoke very good English . The breakfast was excellent with lots of food. The location is perfect and easily accessible. The roof terrace was a romantic area to relax. We liked the "no shoe" policy. And thanks to Nardya, Roberto and The Campbell House Team for making it a great stay. We will surely come back and recommend this place to our friends and relatives.

We stayed for 3 nights on our 2 week holiday around Singapore and Malaysia. Before our arrival we were contacted with the offer to arrange a transfer from the airport which was very helpful, the price is the same as a taxi but you are met at arrivals so much easier. We had a very friendly welcome and a lovely choice of fresh juice to drink as we checked in. The staff are very helpful and friendly and spent time showing us places of interest on the map of Georgetown and good places to eat. We stayed in the Blossom room which is the smallest but is easily as big as other rooms we've stayed in and had everything we needed. The room was lovely and clean as was the rest of the hotel and was very well sound proofed. There was fresh water, milk and juice in the fridge each day and the fridge was good and cold unlike in other hotels we stayed in! We had fun exploring Georgetown, there's lots to see and do and lots of great places to eat, the staff at the hotel are great with recommendations and directions. Nardya and Roberto have a wonderful hotel, beautifully designed, a cool retreat from the heat, with a wonderfully helpful and friendly team.

We stayed here for 3 nights during the Penang leg of a 2 week tour around Malaysia. The experience at Campbell House was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip. The hotel itself was impeccably maintained with a highly stylish and characterful styling. The roof terrace in particular was a great little escape for a drink or 2 away from the bustle of the city.

The staff were invariably polite and extremely helpful, clearly taking a pride in their city and were proactive in making suggestions for activities and sights..as well as suggestions as to where to seek out the best of Penang's incredible food.

The owners, Nardya and Roberto, are to be congratulated on what they've achieved in making Campbell House such a great place to stay. Throughout our visit they could not have done more to make us feel welcome and to help us get the most out of our time in Penang.

Finally, the breakfasts were among the best i've had in any hotel i've stayed in..truly superb.

The hotel is very tastefully decorated with Chinese antiques. The staff speaks perfect English and is very attentive and helpful. The location couldn't be better, right in the middle of the old town. The breakfast was very good, with lots of fruits and good food choices.

Room Tip: We had the opium bed room which was unique in its own way. There will be some city noise because th...

Travelled to Penang to experience the culture and great food. This place is in Georgetown area and quite accessible to all the sights. The staff are really helpful and will orient you on the places to visit and places to find the best food. The staff also helped arranged a van to pick us up at the airport. The room we got is the Opium room as it's the only room with a bath. The room was beautifully designed and the bed was intricately designed with mother of pearls. Although the room is along the street, you do not hear the sounds from the street. The room has beautiful huge windows that helps create the rooms character. They have a Nespresso coffee machine which a coffee lover like me appreciates. Due to it's thick wall, we cannot connect to wi-fi access inside the room. We have to go to the deck area to get access. This is not much of a big deal for us. The only issue we had was on the first day of our stay and the A/C started to drip and we woke up from our nap with the floors wet and filled with water. When I called the reception about it, the service was fast and the owner was actually the one who helped clean and mop the floor. The service guy came after an hour and when the A/C got fixed, we did not have any problems anymore. Breakfast is great as well, not a lot if selection but the food was sufficient. My husband and I will definitely stay here again when we visit Penang again.
