I don't think there are many proper alternatives in Georgetown if you look for an unforgettable experience. Starting with the location and an atmosphere well deserved with meticulously restored old building. The atitude with wich I was greeted upon arrival also speaks for itself - while still in the street paying a fare to a taxi driver, the owner kindly came out smiling and helping me with a ton of gear and luggage I carried - everybody is trying hard to make your stay as cosy as possible and they don't wait around for work to find them, but it's the other way around.
I stayed in the 'peacock' room and besides all the details already mentioned in some of the reviews I can vouch for the bed - since I have problems sleeping, I wouldn't give five stars to a place where I couldn't have slept properly. I slept like a baby throughout my week at Campbell House, each night plunging into all four soft pillows on the bed.
It's even more convenient for me to visit Georgetown now - there's no dilemma about which place to book.

Room Tip: You can't make a bad choice with any of them (I took a sneak-peek at three of them), but 'Pe...

I stayed a week in the beginning of February. The wonderful reviews listed below are all are true from my experience at the Campbell House. This place is awesome! The location is perfect as well. When I give a hotel 5 stars, it is a hotel that I would let my Grandmother stay in. She would love it.

Room Tip: This problem might have been solved by now, but the 2 rooms at the end of the hall on the second flo...

Campbell House deserves every bit of praise and attention bestowed upon it. This lovely, recently restored hotel in historic Georgetown is beautifully appointed with antiques, luscious wood and stained glass, deliciously comfortable beds, and clean, spacious baths. The well stocked, cozy library in the upstairs common area is enough to make you want to take a break from the bustling markets and shops which are within convenient walking distance. Freshly made iced tea and little pitchers of real milk for your in-room coffee brewing are just some of the many lovely touches provided at this intimate, family run guest house. The bistro style restaurant which is attached can start your day off with a full breakfast or take you late into the evening with a well varied menu. I felt welcomed and well cared for at Campbell House.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Sari Room, which had a sweet little balcony and a view of the side street below; it...

I live in Penang and have had plenty of time to search for the best quality, value and convenient accommodations on the island. I have searched this island thoroughly. But my search is over, because I found the Campbell House.

This is a beautiful three-story hotel with a rich traditional finish. Decorated with hand-painted tiles on the floors throughout and spacious tasteful rooms, this place is a winner. Each room is uniquely decorated thematically. The top rooms have faulted beamed ceilings. Each room is spacious and the beds unique. The room I stayed in had a four poster bed that was absolutely gorgeous and the dream to sleep him. The staff is friendly and courteous and eager to help. You will soon learn each staff by name as they become your friends and make you feel at home. This boutique hotel rivals any five star on the island. I stayed with the group for over a week if there was ever a small problem Nardya and Roberto the owners and their staff were quick to fix it.

The location couldn't be better. It's a 10 min. walk to almost any place in historic Georgetown. The area is full of culture for people like myself who like to photograph the unique and yet it is close to a modern mall and shopping center for when you need Starbucks.

For me, hotels are about comfort and convenience. Campbell House was both comfortable and convenient. I can't stress enough the beauty of the rooms, the bed was comfortable not too hard or too soft. They even have an Nespresso coffee machine in your room so you can start the day off right. All the rooms are non-smoking, but on the top floor there's a large balcony that offers a place to smoke can sit and talk with your friends or other guests.

Their restaurant Il Bacaro serves some of the best Italian food on the island. And no wonder as Roberto is Italian and has hired an Italian chef.

if you've got a few days to spend in Penang, forget going to Batu Feranghi do yourself a favor and stay at the Campbell House.

Room Tip: The top rooms are larger and have vaulted ceilings.

Always a little skeptical when a place gets such glowing reviews, but Campbell House totally deserves them. It's a great hotel for anyone who values aesthetics, individual service and attention to detail. The owners have done an amazing job restoring this place. The rooms are beautiful - filled with antique furniture, but they also have flat screen tvs, dvd players and nespresso machines. The breakfast was probably the best hotel breakfast I have ever had -- thankfully, no buffet in sight -- huge platter of tropical fruit, fresh-squeezed juice, cafe latte and eggs to order. Oh, there are also croissants fresh out of the oven. Will definitely stay here again.

The restored Campbell House is immaculate with period fittings and furniture and made for an amazing stay in Penang. The wonderful room with high vaulted ceilings, the charming reception and cosy Italian Restaurant give the perfect ambience of a bygone era... Truely magnificant is not enough to say about this wonderful hotel, where the hosts made you feel welcome as if being invited into their own home...

It was a pure delight to be so central in Georgetown and being surrounded by amazing achitecture and some great vegetarian restaurants... and to return to this magnificent hotel each evening made it a truely memorable experience.

The hotel is a destination in itself and we hope to return to Penang again in the future with Campbell House being the top of our list for places to stay.. it really was that good...

Room Tip: Go for the rooms on the top floor.. magnificent...

I've never written a review before, neither positive or negative. Never felt a pressing need, until now. My wife and I came upon the Campbell House Hotel in Penang by accident- our original hotel was overbooked, and shuffled us to Campbell. That was a piece of supreme good fortune.

You might find a hotel with better service than Campbell House, where every single person we encountered on the staff was inordinately friendly and helpful, all the way up to the owners, Roberto and Nardya, but it would be very difficult.

You might find a hotel where every detail was considered so carefully, and so well executed, from the design of their bathrooms, the weight of their towels, the choice of every water glass, tea cup, indeed every amenity. If you could imagine being a hotelier in your fantasy, and fixing every stupid thing you've encountered in all the hotels you've had to stay, you might understand what I mean. So, you may be able to find a more carefully considered and executed hotel, but again, it would be hard. Very hard.

Finally, and this is personally the most important- you might find a hotel done up in better taste than Campbell House, but- I would not bet on it. Penang is now a Unesco Heritage city, and Campbell House is located in a beautifully restored Chinatown shop building. It's very easy to turn that kind of renovation into kitsch, but not here. Solid teak floors, exquisite handmade tiles, correct antiques, all done in an understated way. Hotel pictures always make the place look nicer than it is. Here it's the other way around, the hotel, the interiors, are all much nicer than you could expect from pictures.

It's so rare to find all of these things together in one place. I can't give this hotel enough compliments.
