“Fine Breakfast, Deceptive Service”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

My fiance and I had walked past Mews Cafe during a walk around Georgetown, and we were very excited to try breakfast outside on the pretty terrace. While the food was good and atmosphere pleasant, unfortunately the service at the end of the meal really ruined the experience for us.

At the beginning of the meal, we had ordered coffee off the breakfast a la carte menu (7 ringgits for a long black and 10 ringgits for a cappucino) and asked our waiter if we could have them iced (this was not shown as an option on the menu). He told us that was no problem at all and walked away to place our order. What he chose not mention was that it would be an extra charge of several ringgits per coffee. When we got our bill, we were incorrectly charged for two prefix meals (60 ringgits total), and when I asked our new waiter to fix our bill (as our original waiter had left), he told us this bill was actually cheaper than what we had ordered. He showed us the full menu (which we had not been given at the start) and the iced coffees were in fact a lot pricier, but our waiter had purposely failed to tell us this. We tried to fix the bill, but it got too complicated and we ended up just paying way too high a price for a simple egg breakfast and coffee. As a paying customer, I don't see why the waitstaff has to find ways to overcharge- Our waiter also tried to push us to order fresh fruit/juice several times, which we kept politely declining. If not for such issues with service, it would have been a very nice experience. I would definitely recommend going elsewhere for breakfast/coffee at a better value.

Dear andrewharris4,

Thank you for choosing our cafe for your breakfast and for appreciating the quality of our food and the ambience. We apologize for the confusion over your bill and the stress it may have caused you. We would like you to know that all our waiters are trained to inform guests of the price differences should there be any special requests apart from our breakfast menu. Our waiter had no intention at all to overcharge you, in fact he was trying to save you money; it was unfortunate that he was not able to explain the charges to you as he was not around when you were settling your bill. During our breakfast service, only the items on our breakfast menu are available. The full menu is available for lunch and dinner and it lists the full beverage menu which includes your requested iced coffee drinks. This price list should have been shown to you when you chose to order iced coffee drinks as our breakfast menu only sets out the various coffees available at breakfast. The fresh fruits and juices are actually part of the breakfast set. Clearly, the message was not conveyed clearly by our waiter and for this, we owe you an apology. His intention was to recommend the set as it is better value than ordering ala carte items i.e. for less the price of the ala carte items which you ordered, you would have gotten the full breakfast set which includes fresh fruits or juice. Please be assured that we have taken the necessary action to make sure that this regrettable incident will not be repeated. We hope you will give us the opportunity to serve you better.

“Something blue, something rice, something nice”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

Yes, this blue-coloured rice dish from Mews Café that is simply delicious also titillates the senses. It looks amazing, smells appetizing and tasted heavenly as well. The blue juice from re-hydrating dried bunga telang (Butterfly-pea flower) is used to make this beautiful dish called Ikan Sambal. It reminds me very much of the traditional Nasi Kerabu (Salad Rice) from Kelantan – a northeastern state in Malaysia. Mews Café’s version serves the blue-coloured rice with steamed seabass marinated in herbs and spices, encased in a banana leaves parcel to lock in its flovours. On the side, an offering of spicy mango salad, salted egg and 'emping' is served to enhance its indigenous taste. 'Emping' is a bite-size cracker made of 'melinjo' or 'belinjo' (gnetum gnemon) nut. The 'emping' crackers add texture to the dish.

I highly recommend this dish to tourist visiting the island to encounter the wonderful flavours Penang has to offer as well as locals, who will be happy to recognize its savory delights.

Mews Café serves Asian and international specialties, prepared with fresh local ingredients. The kitchen serves breakfast, light bites as well as homely chicken pies, burgers, fish and chips, pasta dishes and Penang favorites. The special board changes daily and is worth checking before ordering. Diners can choose to dine in a cozy air-conditioned setting or alfresco.

Mews Café is located at the heart of the UNESCO heritage zone in George Town, Penang. If you are exploring the streets of George Town, this café would be ideal to stop by for lunch, dinner or coffee. It opens from 8.30pm to 11.30pm and the warm and friendly atmosphere is just so welcoming.

“Cute cafe, good service”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

My husband selected this place for lunch and I was sceptical however I was pleasantly surprised by the attentive service and the food was quite tasty. Pricier than other lunch options & the staff were fine with us sharing Vietnamese rolls and a noodle dish. The laksa special looked good too but we were only looking for a light lunch so couldn't fit it in.

“Lovely way to spend a Saturday evening - good varied food and live music”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

Was looking for a place to take my Mom - a fussy eater, a friend on a vegetarian diet and another friend who is a good cook of local food. And I wanted something "western". We were all pleased to find something on the menu to meet our different tastes and expectations - a smoked salmon sandwich, broccoli soup and vegetarian pasta, Johor laksa, and roast chicken. The little cafe has great ambience - in the heart of the heritage site but relaxing and welcoming. The staff were cheerful and attentive. And it was an extra treat to have live music and a lovely singer. What would otherwise have been a wet and miserable evening turned out to be very pleasant indeed.

“some of the best local food we had in Malaysia, spotlessly clean and tres chic.”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

This was a wonderful discovery on our visit to Penang. We found it walking along the amazing Muntri Street which is one of the grandest and well preserved streets in the heritage site but more residential and less commercial ( and less touristy) than so many other streets.

Wonderful breakfasts and the best cafe coffee. We returned for lunch the next day and had marvelous malay and chinese cuisine with service that was warm friendly and incredibly caring.

There is also a good selection of western food.

The cafe is part of a beautiful small hotel which is gardened and like and oasis and very very tasteful. So chic and yet so incredibly affordable.

Well done Muntri Mews Thankyou
