Chulia Heritage Hotel

We stayed at this hotel in Dec-12. It's located within the heritage area, and walkable to lots of good food. The room is quite small but consider very clean. There are plenty of parking lots for the customer.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms does not come with attached bathroom. Do check properly when you want to book your...

Good location, standard rooms, affordable price. Photos of the rooms are very deceiving, the room is actually quite disapointing and the walls are really thin, could hear neighbours chatting which was quite annoying. If you are looking for an affordable stay this is recommended.

The first view of the hotel was very comforting, as if it is going to be a good stay. The outside view was nice and grand... and that's all. I couldn't find the hotel if it wasn't my GPS that showed the exact location, there is not sign of direction at all.

The first night was upgraded to a "deluxe" where we found lots of ants at every corner, stains, and dust... complained to the service staff (and luckily the staffs are friendly). It was fully booked, so that we only get a new room the next night. I was with my kid and you can imagine how uncomfortable it can gets...

There were no towels in the room (also the second night), the shower room was ok clean, but was badly organized/built, as the shower is between the toilet and the sink. All your stuffs will be soaked after a shower... (not to mention that there are some crawling unknown worms in the toilets)

The parking spaces are limited, the plastic kettles are new, wifi only available at the lobby area, and the building leaks when it rains...

That probably sums up all i wanted to say, for that price, you probably cannot complain much, but the hotel was only a few years old, and it shows how poor the maintenance has been done.

Pictures attached. Enjoy...

*If the is one good thing about the hotel... the staffs are friendly... thats all

Stayed here in December 2011. The hotel was just opened when husband and I stayed there. Location was central. Very near to famous 'makan' places in penang city- walkable. stayed at double room. Room was clean, not that big but it was just nice for two. pleasant interior. bed was comfy. Bathroom also was very clean. Check-in and check-out was fast. recommended!

There are lots of boutique hotels springing up in Georgetown and there are many more coming as they cotton on to the fact that not everyone wants to rough it in Chinatown in a dodgy backpackers down love lane! However they don't really come cheap and we were on a budget so when we found this place it was a bargain! It's half the price of other heritage hotels and admittedly not as fancy but it's in a great location in chinatown set just back from the main road behind some other backpackers places so it's not as noisy as it could be. In fact the only noise is from the hotel doors shutting because it is an old building with high ceilings and it does tend to echo but you have to accept that there's not much they can do about the acoustics and you don't hear noise through the walls it's just the corridors. The rooms are very clean, simple modern style but the bathrooms are wet rooms and small but bathrooms aren't given a lot of space in a lot of Malaysian hotels we found and they are often wet rooms but the shower was good and again all very clean. The rooms themselves are small but they have everything you need, fridge, tv etc and with all that georgetown has to offer i doubt you'll be sitting in your room all day anyway! The staff are very friendly and helpful and they always greet you with a smile. They have free wifi, bit slow but then again we found that in most places. All in all this is a bargain heritage place in a central location with lovely staff and it's clean and comfortable so unless you want motel style big and chic or pricey heritage opulence you can't go wrong with this place. Book it!

This hotel is nicely situated away from the actual main road as it has a small lane leading up to the main building, hence it does not face directly onto the main street where it could get noisy and dusty in the middle of the day. It has a really nice facade, with great heritage looks and even more so at night with illuminating lights onto the building.

The rooms are decent sized (although for some it could be considered small). I stay in a double room with 2 queen sized beds, and there was just enough room to walk around. It has a complete white interior and wooden floor, which I found to be quite homely. Aircon is very strong which is good considering the scorching Penang afternoons where I would return back for a nice snooze post-lunch :)

Hotel staff is friendly and ready for info and tips on where the best foods are. The lobby is non-aircon which doesn't make a difference to me but does to some (maybe because the WiFi is strongest there and people have to sit in the lobby to use it).

P.S. The charsiew (caramel roasted pork) at Sky Hotel just a few blocks away was one of the best I have ever eaten, and should not be missed!

This hotel has a great position, off the main street so it's quiet at night!
The staff were very helpful, showing us where to rent scooters (which were great), lending us adapters and always greeting you nicely when you came in.

The rooms were basic but then for what you pay you don't expect more than basic. they are cleaned well every day and have free wi fi. The tv also has a few good channels for films in the evening.
The major issue with this hotel is the bathroom, whilst it is lovely and modern and kept very clean, there unfortunately is a very foul smell. The cleaner sprays fresher in it every day but after an hour or so the smell is back, bad drainage I think, but keep your bathroom door shut whilst in bed and there's no problem really.
