“Impeccable Service, stylish boutique hotel”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights on our first trip to Penang. The hotel is small but stylishly appointed. Beautiful photos and artwork line the walls and the rooms are clean and nicely decorated. But by far the best thing about this hotel is the staff. In particular Annie and Mohammed were extremely courteous, friendly and helpful, but really all our dealings with staff were an absolute pleasure. Breakfast options were not extensive but all food was good. Free wifi in the rooms, a small free minibar and free local Diwali snacks were among the nice little surpises that made our stay great.

I had a few small issues, including loud street noise and a VERY firm mattress which made it difficult to sleep. If you're a light sleeper like me take earplugs! The hotel has a small lap pool that we didn't use but it looked very nice.

Location wise it's a great base to see the bustling sights of Georgetown, and is walking distance from Red Garden Food paradise which is a must-do for dinner one night.

Oh and by the way I'm certain the review below was written by a man who was checking out as we were checking in (we had to endure the entire painful episode) and I have to say he was extremely rude and unreasonable to the staff who were doing their best to serve him. Requesting an early check-in is never guaranteed, especially when you make the booking the same day! That's it's called a "request" and not an "entitlement"!

Great hotel to enjoy the historic city. It's easy to walk to historic and interesting sites from the hotel. Only downside is the noise from the street if you happen to get a room facing one. Other than that, it's a wonderful hotel with excellent service staff!

Great location, easy to walk to all the main sights in George Town from here. Plenty of local restaurants (especially in the daytime) and handy for the Red Garden night food court.

The rooms are very stylishly designed, and we thought the bathrooms were superb – great shower fittings although the Jacuzzi bath was well surpassed by the massage jets in the lap pool. Which is just that – it’s for exercise rather than lounging and has a glass side so you feel a bit like a goldfish must feel in a tank! Only 2 sun loungers too. And the “stylish” Chinese wardrobe was not long enough to hang up a dress.

Good breakfast with plenty of choice and eggs cooked to order.

The staff at the hotel were friendly enough but for a boutique hotel seemed quite impersonal – they didn’t seem to know us by name in a 3 night stay, and when I asked if they had green tea bags they just said no, no attempt to help. I was also disappointed in that it was my husband’s birthday while we were there and I had emailed the hotel to ask if they could mark this in some small way – they emailed back to say they would but in fact nothing was done on the day.

I also felt there was a lounge area missing; there were couches on landings and corridors but that’s not really where you want to sit, so you really had to sit in your room and this meant no sense of communal living. There was good availability of wifi however.

We stayed in this hotel for just a night in November. Picked it from the good tripadvisor recommendations.

It was an impulse selection, we'd landed in penang that morning without a hotel and booked using agoda phone app.

Wanted to get some rest as we were exhausted. Made a special request on agoda that we wanted to check in by 1130 am.

We show up at the hotel at 1145 am. The front desk doesn't have our booking and looks at us in a mystified manner. Had to pull out the agoda booking confirmation to show them and had to forward the email to them.

They took 15 minutes to confirm we actually had a reservation. Then Mr. Mohd Rashidee told us "Check in is at 3pm"

I told him we'd cancel the booking if we couldn't get a room then.

Then Mr. Sivalingam the Operations Manager tells us to sit down.

Why?

He needs to check with housekeeping how long it'll take.

Ok we'll stand while he checks.

No He doesn't know HOW LONG IT'LL TAKE FOR HIM TO CHECK.

What ???!! Doesn't even make sense.

So I ask him, how long do you want us to wait for you to check. 10 min? 15 min? An hour?

He says " YEAH 2 HOURS OK! GO CANCEL YOUR BOOKING!"

Wow.

That just spoiled out whole experience at the hotel.

Our two night stay in Penaga Hotel was a relaxing oasis in the heart of Georgetown. An impressive group of traditional shophouses make up the rooms, spas and dining areas of this beautiful hotel.

Although it is not located in the heart of Georgetown, it is certainly within walking distance of popular areas like Upper Penang Road, Chulia Street and Campbell Street. Metered taxis and tuk-tuks are easily available outside, on always-busy Hutton Road.

We stayed in the Hutton Rooms, which were very spacious for the two of us. The room was a beautifully laid and decorated with with ornate, antique furniture and modern amenities (like a huge bathroom with a high-pressure rain shower and jacuzzi tub, whee!). An interesting mix of local and international art adorned the rooms and hallways. I almost felt like we were in a living museum!

A few cons: The double bed in our room was too short for Simon (who is 6ft tall). This is a common and annoying occurrence in Asia where bed lengths are much shorter compared to the West, so we weren’t totally surprised. Still, it would have been nice to have had longer beds given the large number of international travellers.

Additionally, the stain glassed windows were beautiful, but did nothing to block the constant stream of light – day or night. Our room in particular had a patch of sunlight that would hit us square in the face every morning. Our corner room also meant we got to ‘enjoy’ two busy streets worth of constant motorcycle rumbling. If you’re a light sleeper who needs to perfect darkness, bring ear plugs and an eye mask!

On that note, larger rooms like Transfer or Clarke will cater to large families or groups, and will probably be a little quieter as they are located away from the busy main streets.

The staff were outstanding at Penaga Hotel – helpful and affable without being intrusive, and highly knowledgable and efficient. When we arranged for last minute airport transfers, they got everything done in under a minute.

On our first evening, we asked the front desk for some dinner options and he convinced us to check out Red Garden, a cluster of food stalls with delicious, cheap local food and a highly entertaining live band. A mere 5 minute walk away from the hotel (down some dubious alleys!), it was a fantastic experience. We thanked him for the recommendation when we stumbled back to the hotel – hours later – after a few too many Tiger beers!

The pool area is a lovely, leafy area that provides ample shade from Penang’s heat. With just two sun beds and a handful of rattan seats, this is definitely not the hotel for you if you want to lie out and get a tan! The pool itself is shallow and rather narrow – great for kids and floating around, but not ideal if you want a vigorous swim. Thankfully, it never seems to be too crowded so you feel like you have it all to yourself.

On the plus side, the hotel spa was wonderful. Again, service was top notch, and the spa menu was extensive. The facilities were simple and keeping with the traditional style of the hotel, but certainly comfortable and complete. I only wish I had discovered it sooner!

Room Tip: Hutton 29 was a bit noisy (street noise) and bright (stained glass windows letting the light in). Tr...

We found the hotel thanks to Tripadvisor review and we enjoyed our 2 nights stay. The room and was very nice. The breakfast was very good. Service was helpful and people very kind. The hotel is very close to campbell street and the city center.
We will go back there when we'll be back in Georgetown.

Room Tip: We booked a room with balcony - that was inside the court. Room was quiet.

I stayed Feb 2013. The room, Hutton with balcony was stunning. The bed, the bathroom, the decoration all fabulous. Service was very mixed. Staff on the desk were very friendly and very helpful and allowed us a late check out. The bar / room service was less good - it is advertised as 24 hours but when I tried to order a drink at 11pm they said it couldnt be done. My boyfriend then rang down and lo and behold the drink materialised?! The pool is small but good for a few laps to cool off. The location is also good. I would be very happy to stay here again.
