“Wonderful and welcoming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

We stayed for 5 nights at the Hotel Penaga, a wonderful renovation of several buildings right in the heart of George Town. Firstly, the staff were so welcoming and friendly, with plenty of information about where to go and how to get there. Our room was fantastic, beautifully decorated in an eclectic mix of old chinese furniture with modern conveniences. I loved the rustic tiling on our bathroom floor, and the attention to detail in the furnishings. We could hear some street noise from the little eatery across the lane but that just added to the fact we were in an exotic location, and it was not loud enough to bother us, just to entice us over there to eat! We stayed in the Hutton Building and on every floor, and in the bedrooms, there were original artworks, almost like a gallery itself! Breakfast was included, but if it weren't you would only have to walk across the street to find fantastic food choices. Each night we could just walk to a different area to savour the local food.We loved our stay at the Penaga. Sure, you can find cheaper places to stay, but why not go away with a luxurious memory of Penang where your money goes further - you may not get such a wonderful opportunity again.

You would do well to book here it is (like it was for us) your first trip to Georgetown. The hotel's building is steeped in character and the rooms are extremely well appointed and beautifully decorated.
Location wise, everything we came to see in Georgetown was within walking distance, with the only exception being Kek Lok Si which is an approximately 20-30 minute taxi ride away. The staff were also more than happy to point you in the direction of places and areas that they felt we would enjoy.
Considering how far most currencies go in Malaysia, its very much worth spending the extra bit of money and booking into a place like this.
Strongly recommend.

This hotel is beautifully stylish - from the rooms to the decor in halls, it is all attractive. The rooms are really well equipped, breakfast was excellent and the spa was super relaxing with a nice range of treatments. My only slight issue was the level of noise from the street. Our room was a bit noisy at night, so it might be worth taking earplugs.

We spent 3 fantastics days in Hotel Penaga. The hotel is beautiful, a mix of old chinese furniture (all renovated!) with all comodities of a high standing hotel. Every detail in the hotel is just fantastic. Our room was kindly decorated with roses all over the place (on the bed, on the night lamps tables, on the desk... and the best: on the bathrooom jacuzzi!). And all these decoration for free since we where in our honey moon. We where upgraded to a room with balcon and court view, so no problem with street noise.
Bedrooms are spacious, confortable, with free mini bar, big flat TV, fully clean everywhere, bed is just delicious.
Breakfast is completed and vary with many home made pastries, great variety of fruits and juices. I recommend the banana cake.
The personnel is excellent, all of them. We got all information to visit the city and also to how to visit some lonely beaches (Monkey Beach).
We spent 3 weeks in Malaysia, and stayed in more than 7 hotels. Penaga hotel was definetively the best one!
Dont hesitate more, book and enjoy!

Room Tip: Court yard view room

We stayed at the Penaga for four nights and loved it. Close to the city centre with the Blue Mansion and Red Garden Food Court only a few minutes walking away. Beautifully renovated rooms with loads of detail in all the furniture. But by far the best thing about the hotel, is the personnel. They really go out of their way to ensure you have a great time. My only recommendation would be upgrading the room with an iPhone dock and upgrading the complimentary minibar with some beers.
PS. If you're not Asian, don't get too excited about the jacuzzi (it's really small).

Room Tip: Go for a room with a balcony, worth the few extra bucks.

It was lovely visiting this hotel from the moment we arrived after a 15 hour journey with lost luggage. The staff, particularly the manager Annie, were very welcoming and helpful. They organised an early check-in and followed up about our bags for us. They were always friendly and checking we had everything we needed, but were also not obtrusive.

The rooms are large and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel fit-out is beautifully done with interesting art and great style throughout. There is so much attention to details, even the small ones.

We also visited the spa a couple of times - great massages and again really great staff. It is a highly recommended way to spend some spare time.

Room Tip: The balcony rooms are worth it.

We stayed at The Penanga for 3 nights in 2 Hutton rooms. The hotel is walking distant to all attractions in Georgetown; the beds were comfortable, the breakfast was great, the decor was really impressive and the staff were always helpful. It was a very enjoyable stay made even better by the great pool to cool off in after a day seeing the sights. The central garden was a lovely quiet oasis in the midst of the noise and excitement that is Georgetown. We would stay again.

Room Tip: Choose Hutton room with balcony - they are quieter and overlook the garden.
