This is an old style shop house--several joined together. Had our own veranda. Carved wood and details in our room. Old style charm, wood paneling. Jacuzi in room. Lovely pool in garden for swimming laps. Nice meals, Good breakfast choices--western and asian.

Room Tip: Don't take the two story room, bathroom is downstairs

A very beautifully done up couple of heritage buildings with surprisingly large rooms. Service was patchy and at times chaotic, but the will to be helpful was there. Avoid any buffets or high teas as they were very inferior. In fact apart from breakfast, stick to a snacks only policy at the hotel. The lap pool was attractive, but very public and shockingly cool. The spa was not operating when we visited. In terms of location, quite a bit of walking was needed to connect you with the heart of Georgetown and it was difficult to get trishaws from outside the hotel

Room Tip: Ask for an interior deluxe room. Our room looked onto the street, but fortunately efficient double...

What an amazing hotel experience. Room was exceptionally well furnished with comfortable (hard) bed, a jacuzzi bath and swedish shower. Quiet rooms enabled a good night's rest to be had. Location is good as it is only around 10-15m walk to most areas of interest. Didn't want to leave.

Room Tip: Room Hutton 8 is nicely in a corner and quiet

beautiful hotel created from old Georgetown buildings but you can tell it is owned and designed by an architect. It all looks wonderful but it is just not practical. The bedrooms are small and there is a sofa at the end of the bed which is covered in plastic and is only two feet away from the chest of drawers with a TV on top so just not comfortable. Downstairs the lounge is just two small plastic covered sofas in a tiny corridor room so not comfortable and is the main route to the bar so no privacy at all. Restaurant okay but breakfast is very limited in choice. Very friendly and helpful staff and wonderfully located for going round Georgetown. Ideal for young trendy guests but not for travllers who want a bit of comfort and relaxation.

Room Tip: Perhaps go for a suite to get a bit more space and comfort.

The hotel gives one a walk through Nyonya Heritage but with a twist of centemporary confort. Every single piece of furniture and fixures are carefully selected and put together. You can tell that the decorator put in lots of efforts to make this place a treasure. Spacious room, big bathroom with shower room and a jacuzzi bathtub.
Good location as it's just a 10 minutes walk to the famous cendol stall and some other Penang famous hawker food.
The hotel does not have a basement, but they do provide free parking for the guests, which is right outside the premise. However, you will have to inform the staff and they shall remove the lock that was place to secure the parking lot.
Breakfast is nothing special, not so much of variety though.
The free wifi, cleanliness and the staff's courtesy score BIG points to make me want to come back again.
Good choice!

I stayed here for 6 nights while day-tripping to customers in Kulim, Kamunting and Ipoh. This is a lovely hotel with lots of pluses but maybe not the best choice for business.

First the pluses - wonderful, friendly staff, and a gorgeous, charming room. Also the bedding was very comfortable.

Now the challenges.
1. Getting around - the spot is central to so many locations in George Town. However walking the streets in this area of the city can be treacherous! On many roads there is no sidewalk so be ready to dodge traffic!

2. Breakfast - the selection and quality are good, but there is almost no variety. This would have been fine for a few days but really became monotonous after 6.

3. Noise - the road noise can be REALLY bad, probably just a result of the walls, windows and proximity to the road.

4. Bathroom - unfortunately my shower stall leaked, and despite reporting the problem it went unsolved for the duration of my stay.

So it's a mixed bag. If you don't mind taxis and you're only planning on staying a few days this may be a good choice. For me, not so much.

I was impressed by the work that apparently went into this hotel- the owners work professional in environmental and artistic fields- and they took care to re-model this hotel being mindful of environmental aspects and including quality artwork- not the typical cheesy modern art in many hotels.

Pros:
-Location- You can walk all around Georgetown
-The balcony overlooking the garden is lovely
-The art in the room is pretty- from colored glass in the bathroom to wooden shutters to a wooden four poster bed (I think that's what it's called)
-Upon arrival, a staff member brought us a complimentary plate of hors d'oeuvres- each item served on an Asian soup spoon- well presented- and delicious.

Cons:
-The breakfast was lackluster. This really suprised me given the atmosphere of the rest of the hotel.

I would recommend this hotel- but I hope Hotel Penaga works on the breakfast. It does not match the quality and artistic tone of the hotel.
