Stayed with my sister and friend for two nights in the loft suite. Beautifully restored building full of old Penang charm. We all agreed the bathroom was fabulous and particularly liked the option to open the roof which was a nice touch. Beautifully furnished with a delightful balcony where breakfast is served.

Street itself is pretty and perfectly located for food and accessing town for the main sites.

Really well managed and run by a lovely team who really do care about your enjoyment of your holiday and are full of excellent recommendations for places to see, visit and eat. Would definitely stay here again if in Penang, highly recommend.

Thanks Mair for choosing to stay with us and taking the time to write a review through Trip Advisor.

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us. We are most happy to be able to host your friend, sister and you! I do noticed that most of the 'Loft Suite' guests love the retractable roof. The Palanquinn unit took us approximately 5 months to renovate as we did everything ourselves and did not engage architects and designers.

Seeing your comments makes it worthwhile. Thanks again.

Best regards from all of us in Penang!

My sister and I truly enjoyed our stay for two nights at Palanquinn and its other property a few paces away, Dwell Suites, last week. The Loft room was lovely, clean, and big, and we were comfortable just staying in. The experience of staying in a heritage house enriched our Penang travel.

Everyone at Palanquinn, especially Kelvyn, was really helpful with where to go, where to eat, and how to get to places.

The neighborhood, Bangkok Lane, is a good location, and we felt safe. It has a row of beautiful houses, and is fairly quiet for a prime location. The Sleeping Buddha Temple and the Burmese Temple are located on the next block. A 10 minute walk away is Gurney Drive, which has a promenade facing the sea, and on the other side the Gurney Plaza mall, and beside it the Night Market, which serves great char kway teow and oyster cake.

There are plenty of dining options that serve authentic food and don't feel touristy. A block away is the Morning and Night Market. There are also kopi tiams where we tried the flavorful local food.

Highly recommended! Thank you to Kelvyn and everyone at Palanquinn for the warm hospitality. Keep up the labor of love!

Room Tip: The Loft room is great value - has a bedroom, toilet, common area, and balcony

Just spent two nights here, in two different rooms.
The loft is a lovely room. It i basically a bedroom, a living room and a huge shower/toilet area.
The room on the ground floor is smaller, with an adjoining bathroom that has no doors, so it might be awkward if you are there with platonic friends.
Both rooms are nice in their own ways, but I prefer the loft.
I am a city person and am used to ambient noise. But even then it took a little while to adjust to the noise I hear inside the ground floor unit. It comes from the room above and the streets outside.
But I'll still recommend everyone to stay a few nights because the hospitality is lovely.
And it'll be difficult for you to go hungry. Every corner you turn, you'll find something good to eat.
The B&B is a 15 minute stroll to Gurney Plaza, if you need a mall. And everything you might feel like doing should be within 30 minutes driving distance, depending on traffic.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms will be a challenge if you are a light sleeper. Also, first timer - it migh...

Thanks Wee Teck for choosing to stay with us. And many thanks for taking the time to write a review for us through Trip Advisor.

You are right on all the points you mentioned. The 'Terrace Suite' at Palanquinn has a noise factor because it is situated right next to the street. There are other ways we can try to block out the noise but management has always felt it would remove the true heritage experience.

In the old days, there were far less motorcycles and cars which made it bearable in my opinion.

We hope that you will consider us again should you visit Penang in the near future. Thanks again and all the best.

Best regards,
Kelvyn

From my original email enquiry through to our departure both Kelvyn & Charlie couldn't have been more helpful. Kelvyn even went out of his way to book our onward transfer & accommodation.
Traveling with 2 girlfriends you're never too sure how safe you will be but we felt safe at all times.
We were lucky enough to be staying in the loft area which included bedroom with ensuite, lounge area with daybed that doubled as a single bed & balcony overlooking the street.
I would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation to anyone looking at heading to Georgetown.
Must visit The Wine Shop (bar) round the corner for wine & cheese!

Thanks again Charlie & Kelvyn!

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed this cozy b&b located in the quiet historic neighborhood. The house looks like it belonged to some officer or other aristocrat type during a time when the British still controlled everything. It has been redone with all modern comforts for a relaxed stay. Charlie and Kelvyn went out of there way for everything. We had a booking issue when we first arrived although everything worked out perfectly. The breakfast was nice as it was different everyday. We had the downstairs room which was relatively quiet. This place is exceptionally clean. We did have a minor complaint though. We had 3 occasions where housekeeping threw out important items (personal memo, vinegar for medical use and my wife's eye medicine). It was obviously an accident although the staff should make an effort to put all items they are unsure about together or just ask the customer.

We plan on coming back to Penang next year and will most likely stay here again.

Apologies for items being thrown away by mistake. I'm glad to inform you that going forward we have informed the maid to bring back items to the front office (for confirmation) before being removed from the room.

Should you choose to visit Penang again, we would be more than glad to accomodate you.

We stayed in the upstairs apartment at Palanquinn for 3 nights in November( bit slow to get my review done!) and realy enjoyed our time there. Fancy highrise hotels are a dime-a-dozen but places like the Palanquinn are special, and added to the sense of history we enjoyed about staying in Georgetown. Having the upstairs was a good choice as it is probably quieter than the downstairs one as the bedroom is at the back. Bangkok Lane is fantastic but it is full of street life that starts early. Palanquinn does supply ear plugs! If you want to be waited on hand and foot, 24/7, stay elsewhere as they do not have staff there all the time. Having said that Charlie looked after us really well, booking our Langkawi ferry tickest and organising our early morning taxi. There were always contact phone numbers just in case. Breakfast on the balcony was great. Palanquinn is not right in the centre of Georgetown, but the bus goes by the end of the street and taxis are inexpensive. There are plenty of eating options close by and the Gurney Plaza and Gurney Hawker market are a 10 minute walk away. We would be very happy to stay in this charming accommodation again.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs - it is more spacious and quieter

Thanks Grubduck for choosing to stay with us and taking the time to write a review for our B&B on Trip Advisor.

Palanquinn is not situated in the Heritage Core Zone but in 'Pulau Tikus' near 'Gurney Drive'. This area is popular for its food establishment hence the better choice for travelers who are looking to experience the culinary side of Penang.

That said, the Heritage Core Zone is easily accessible by bus and taxis provided by our establishment is cheap because the rates are never marked up.

Should you visit Penang again, please consider us.

Thanks again and regards,

We booked 2 nights there in January 2012 on Asia rooms but when we got to the hotel Mr. Charlie immediately explained us that because of a system problem, our room was already given to someone... He had taken care of everything to get us a plan B at his cost, but it just wasn't what we wanted! He booked us a room in a concrete block of a 4 star hotel, typical outdated but luxurious business hotel with no soul. But I admit he took care of this quite well and it was seamless for us.
Hopefully the second night we got our room and ended up staying one more night after that. The room is very very pretty, Charlie is a nice guy, and the breakfast on the porch is great. But be aware that there are some nuisances: first of all the room is very noisy, and I know what I am talking about; I live in Bombay. Secondly, the shower has a drainage problem, which means you end up having 10 cms of water on your feet when you're done, and it doesn't feel clean at all. And last; there was a sort of table/cabinet in the room which was infested with some sort of bugs (maybe termites). We found out after having left a glass of orange juice on top of it, when the glass was packed with those bugs.
So really a beautiful and charming place but be it is not a luxury place, and I would say it's a little pricey for what you get. If we come back to Penang; we would look for another place.

Thanks Courla for choosing to stay with us and taking the time to write a review through Trip Advisor.

We would like to apologize to you once again for the double-booking error. There is no excuse. It is carelessness on our part.

There isn't much we can do about the noise factor because we believe it to be part of the heritage experience. We have other rooms within our B&B (only 7 rooms) that will have less issues, which is why we always encourage direct bookings. Guests will be able to tell us beforehand what bothers them.

Immediately upon seeing your review, we cleared the drain pipes. We do not know what cause the drainage problem but we believe it to be hair. The bugs are not termites but ants. If you leave a drink with sugar out in the open long enough, they are sure to come.

Best regards,
Kelvyn
