I stayed here for 2 nights while exploring Georgetown.

Pros:
1. Great Location: Lots of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. It is located in the heritage area so there are lots attractions nearby to explore.
2. Customer Service: Rooms were clean and the room service was quick to respond to any needs. Everyone at the hotel was helpful and a pleasure to deal with. The hotel itself was well maintained and very clean.
3. Pool: There is a pool on the first floor for you to cool off after walking around Georgetown
4. Hotel Cafe: Meals at the cafe are delicious and at a reasonable price.
5. Private Parking: Hotel has its own gated parking in the back.

Cons:
1. Space: The room itself is quite small and would be cramped if you have a family. I traveled by myself so this wasn't a big issue.
2. TV: Has a limited number of channels. Not all the channels worked.

Overall I was extremely satisfied with my stay and my experience.

Beautifully restored old hotel with modern amenities. 5 star quality small boutique hotel.
Located within walking distance to many interesting sights (Khoo Kongsi, Chew Jetty, interesting buildings etc).
Rooms are clean, large and beautiful. They managed to get a pool made for a reasonable small hotel.
Breakfast was interesting with a good selection of local cakes but do not expect the same spread as a large hotel.

Turn left from the entrance and you can find a good restaurant at Sky Hotel selling good roast pork and BBQ pork rice.
Turn right and walk a bit to a road called Lebuh Cintra, and you can find a shop selling fried flat noodles or char kuey teow (a local delicacy). Walk further down Lebuh Cintra until you pass a funeral home, you will find lots of local food at the corner restaurant.

Overall a satisfying stay. Staff was professional and you can see that the staff are constantly maintaining the hotel to tip top condition.

Recommended.

Room Tip: This hotel only has 2 floors. Ground floor rooms may have more traffic noise and noise from the gard...

We stayed for 4 nights last week. Plus points - excellent location for food and exploring, polite and helpful staff, simple but appetizing breakfast, cosy ambience (more like staying at home) and tasteful design.
Minus points - located in busy street (can be noisy for rooms at the front), only 2 of tv channels worked, repair works at 10pm, sole internet work station not working and no table for luggage.
It's value for money and we would love to return there; if they fix the tv!

We booked two nights as part of a self fly-drive trip around Malaysia. We liked both Georgetown and in particular this hotel so much we extended our stay by another two nights. All the good reviews are justified, best breakfast selection even compared to top 5* hotels around the world in my opinion; great selection of local favourites including seasonal fruits, cakes, roti and curry and all the usual western breakfast items. The pool is a great place to cool off in the afternoon before going out again in the evening due the hotels' amazing location and after dinner there's a lovely courtyard to have an evening drink. Private parking, beautiful decor, nice staff and generally a very well maintained intimate hotel full of charm and character. Would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed it. The place was clean, safe, unique, and we were always very warmly greeted. The hotel is small and personal, and our needs always seemed to matter to the staff. Its like they were looking to see where they could help (e.g., "what are you doing today? Oh going for a walk through the streets? Why dont you take an umbrella to stay cool? Heres one"). The included breakfast was delicious and filled us up for the day. The hotel is very centrally located -- right on the small but active main street. Its about 3km from the ferry docks and about 15km to the airport. Theres also a bus stop a block away. Worth the stay!

A very nice hotel that is located near all the sites and sounds of Georgetown. The food is good and restaurant is very nice, with great local and western selections. Try the bike tour to find all the street art around town.

...we had a 'courtyard twin' room and we felt very cramped - small beds, nowhere to put suitcases and nowhere to put toiletries in the bathroom. It was a big comedown from the executive club room that we had at the Shangri-La in KL but then again so was the price!

We stayed three nights and breakfasts were adequate but not always sufficiently hot and nowhere near as good as others would have you believe however the glowing comments on the service are quite accurate.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Yeng Keng Hotel is a 20-room restored heritage boutique hotel located in one of the oldest surviving and intact 19th-century buildings at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang. Like many of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, it was originally built in the mid 1800's as a private residence. The Anglo Indian bungalow belonged initially to Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff an Indian Muslim family and remains unique in Chulia Street for not being relegated to the rear of a row of shop-houses blocking its facade. In 1897 trustees of the Cantonese Club 'Ying Han Pit Shu' bought the building on behalf of the association, later donating it to the trustees of the Straits Chinese Building Association in 1939. The building was later leased to Yeng Keng Hotel. The conversion from a residence into a budget hotel was the prevailing trend along the street at the beginning of the 20th century. Small places of lodgings that were conveniently reached from the harbour were in great demand as the traffic in the port grew. An impressive traditional Chinese entrance gate was constructed announcing entry to the 'Lodging House,' adding grandeur to the commercial establishment and to distinguish it from the rest of the buildings on the street. Conservation and upgrading by the present owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd, was undertaken in March 2009 with the renewed Yeng Keng Hotel completed in April 2010. ... more   less
