Yeng Keng is a truly lovely little boutique hotel in Georgetown. The staff are extremely helpful and polite, and happy to do anything you asked of them. The rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious, with cosy beds and an efficient safe to keep your valuables in. The bathrooms were both extremely modern and sparkling clean. Having heard descriptions of a 'tiny' pool, we were pleased with its size and enjoyed a refreshing splash in there each day. The cafe served delicious food and breakfast was truly excellent: a large-choice selection of Asian and Western food. The hotel was in a great location and many sites were walkable from it. The building was beautifully renovated. Yeng Keng is brilliant!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Family Courtyard Room, which was lovely.

While not a fancy property, Yeng Keng is full of charm and makes for a great home base while exploring Penang. The rooms are clean and tasteful; the service was great and always available; and the location is absolutely perfect. We found it to be great value.

This place is a great property. The location is absolutely ideal right in the main heritage area yet with its own courtyard to have sundowners and watch the world pass by. Room was comfy and quiet if a bit small, but I'm a bit big. Staff was very helpful in recommending the best street food options and arranging all transport which we required. The breakfast at the cafe was adequate but just that, we had to wait about 20 min for an omelette, but this is Malaysia.

My only real gripe was that the wifi in the hotel needs some boosting. It wasn't really find-able in our room and outside the veranda on the front it dropped off.

Room Tip: upstairs towards the back probably the best bet.

This boutique hotel is a very relaxed place in Georgetown. The staff is very friendly and helpfull and the cafe next door serves good food. Altough the swimmingpool is small, our 3 kids loved it at the end of the day after a day off sightseeing. Highly recommended.

Fantastically friendly staff at reception offering good advice regarding where to eat and transport tips etc. The room was lovely with everything needed on offer including free wifi.
The location is great being close to nighttime hawker stalls just down Chulia Street by the 7 eleven with amazing food on offer. Just up the street and around the corner is the Red Garden food court which is great but slightly touristy. If you want to eat with the locals catch a bus to the jetty from outside the 7 eleven for MYR1.40 each and then walk along Weld Quay toward CF food court. This was recommended to us by a local and offers all of the local specialties. Beautiful hotel in the heart of Georgetown.

We came here after reading many good reviews and we are very glad we did. We had just stayed in KL and were on our way up to Langkawi. We paid 12RM for a taxi from the ferry terminal as it was way to hot to walk. We had 2 nights here and wish we could have stayed longer. We were greeted at the gate by friendly porters: they carried our heavy suitcases to reception for us where we were immediately given a glass of ice cold apple juice..a lovely personal touch. We were a bit worried when we were shown to our room LITERALLY next to the reception counter. But once inside it didn't matter. Huge - spacious - beautifully decorated - Aircon AND a ceiling fan - massive comfy bed - tv - hotel style bathroom and toiletries etc, plenty of towels - flannels - hand towels just brilliant. Wifi was consistent, the room was clean and well serviced, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and was a big selection of cooked, eggs, sausage, fruit, cereal, toast, juice coffee etc...basically all attractions in Georgetown were walking distance, and we hired a taxi for 3 hours at only 100RM for the attractions that weren't.
Overall well worth the little small amount of extra money.
Great stay and highly recommended.

The Yeng Keng lived up to all the other reviews - the location and standard of the hotel was exactly what we wanted - an oasis in the middle of of all the hustle and bustle of the city. Easy walking from all the key sites with easy and quick taxi service for others!

The staff in the cafe and hotel were very helpful and made our stay very easy and relaxed. We were lucky to stay in one of the Garden Rooms, which gave us a little more room to relax!

Food was good and there was a wide choice!

Room Tip: If you can afford it spring for a garden room!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Yeng Keng Hotel is a 20-room restored heritage boutique hotel located in one of the oldest surviving and intact 19th-century buildings at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage City of George Town, Penang. Like many of the other buildings in the neighbourhood, it was originally built in the mid 1800's as a private residence. The Anglo Indian bungalow belonged initially to Shaik Eusoffe bin Shaik Latiff an Indian Muslim family and remains unique in Chulia Street for not being relegated to the rear of a row of shop-houses blocking its facade. In 1897 trustees of the Cantonese Club 'Ying Han Pit Shu' bought the building on behalf of the association, later donating it to the trustees of the Straits Chinese Building Association in 1939. The building was later leased to Yeng Keng Hotel. The conversion from a residence into a budget hotel was the prevailing trend along the street at the beginning of the 20th century. Small places of lodgings that were conveniently reached from the harbour were in great demand as the traffic in the port grew. An impressive traditional Chinese entrance gate was constructed announcing entry to the 'Lodging House,' adding grandeur to the commercial establishment and to distinguish it from the rest of the buildings on the street. Conservation and upgrading by the present owner, Hoo Kim Properties Sdn Bhd, was undertaken in March 2009 with the renewed Yeng Keng Hotel completed in April 2010. ... more   less
