“Authentic stay in Georgetown”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

My initial reaction when I arrived was disappointing as I am more used to staying in hotels like the Shangri-La but I soon adapted and in hindsight we really got to appreciate the real Georgetown. Initially we stayed in no. 91 before going off to Kuching for a few days and then came back and stayed in no. 95 which was more comfortable/bigger and stairs not as steep although preferred open air bathroom in no.91 (not good if you need privacy as clear view of shower from one of the bedrooms). Mosquito repellent/nets etc were provided and very much needed - but if you are like me and an expert in mosquito bite avoidance you'll be fine. Friends who were with me got quite badly bitten - they will now follow my guidelines in future. The residence was cleaned daily but change of towels would have been appreciated. This is not a luxury residence so don't expect too much but having said that I would highly recommend this place to get a real feel of the city (but would not think that this type of accommodation would suit a young family).

Our family stayed for a night where we book 2 units of the collection recently. It was definitely in the heart of the Georgetown Heritage Zone with all the sights within a short walk away. The place is very busy througout day (probably because of CNY celebration) except for late nights or early morning. The ambience was great and we had lots of planned activities. The only downside was the lack of privacy where passers by kept peering into the houses and kept on asking if we were selling food during meal times. Security was also a concern where we need to keep a lookout as there were so many people around. The other downside was that it had a lot of mosquitoes despite the number of insect repellent coils was used.

Stayed in 91 unit. Friendly owners and comfortable clean rooms. Location is right smack in the city centre. However, rooms are located at 2nd level with steep steps, and we placed our luggage on ground floor instead. Would not recommend for family with young kids or people with joint problem. Heard early chanting/ prayers @ 6am and about 10-11pm-ish thus if you are a light sleeper, you would not be able to sleep long

I stayed in Armenia Street 91 for a couple of weeks until my new lap top was stolen through the window bars from a table 6 feet in the room. The hotel rooms are in a very exposed area and there is no security and no CCTV. The owner of the place did not even apologize. She just had the place made safer after the police had come to the conclusion that the current condition was unsafe. The staff was nice and friendly, but I have never seen a more lousy behavior than that of one of the owners, Alison. She played for time a couple of weeks and then hid behind her insurance; I am going to sue the owner.
There were about 10 emergency numbers in the room, I tried them all when I discovered the theft in the morning. You have to have a local mobile phone with you as there is no telephone in the room. 8 of the numbers did not answer at all. Two answered, but the other side did not speak a word of English.
Never ever again will that place see me.

Room Tip: The rooms are dark and noisy.

Gorgeous location and accommodation was very spacious and clean. Loved sleeping under the mosquito nets! The shower was sensational and the little courtyard lovely. The furniture suited the accommodation but was a little uncomfortable and the second bedroom was bright overnight as the street light shone in. Would definitely recommend!

We went to Georgetown in February 2013 and could not have picked a better location, at a quiet spot along a central artery of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. These are old Chinese shop houses, so do not expect slick and modern, however they are full of charm, and happy colours. Ours was spotless, airy and comfortable. From here we walked down the street to China House for the best lattes in Malaysia, a never ending array of delicious desserts and equally delectable dishes. Back in our little shop house, the water pressure was strong, plenty of hot water, internet was speedy, and there was plenty of natural light. Good value and a sweet experience.

We spent 3 nights in Penang. Wonderful town with plenty of good food and warm locals. The Straits Collection was recommended to me by a friend who is a local. Therefore I had no qualms about booking this property. Location wise we had no complaints because it was in the middle of Georgetown. With the price that we paid, we were expecting close to a luxury boutique property but there were wooden panels covering the door from the ceiling which looked like they were just put there temporarily to block out the noise from the streets. The front door was in its original state (you could see the street outside in between the panels) which meant that the noise from the street outside was crystal clear. Also for light sleepers, do be aware that the property is very close to a mosque so the daily morning calls to prayers can be very loud. The wiring work was shoddy, they were firstly not concealed, secondly they looked as if they were done in a hurry and we could even see the router dangling from the wires. The toilets were also not thoroughly cleaned, they smelt of urine. Amenities were not replenished on a daily basis. Towels were not changed even though we soiled one and placed them on the floor. Though we will be back to Penang, we will definitely not be staying at The Straits Collection.
