“Good rooms right in the heart of penang”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

We stayed for 4 nights in sept 2012
We payed 50myr for a twin room with air con and private bathroom.the room had free wi fi which was pretty fast .
This was our second time at the star lodge in four years and was happy to see that it had kept really good standards.the rooms are really clean a good size and the beds are good too
.the guys who run the place have good info on penang and know all the bus routes for getting around .
its right in the heart of the backpacker area too so good for meeting other travellers too.its close to lots of the historic sites of penang and the food in penang is the best in malaysia(in our opinion).
we will definitely stay here again when we return to penang .

I stayed at the Star Lodge for 3 nights in October 2012.

The room I took was a double with aircon + private bathroom for 50 ringgit per night. The room was basic (no fridge or TV - just a bed, a table + 2 chairs and a bathroom) but was a decent size for the price. Clean and no problems to speak of.

Wi-Fi is available but at the time of my stay was not working in the rooms, only in the lobby. This was inconvenient but it may be fixed by the time you read this. There was ample room and power connections to sit and use the internet in the hotel lobby.

The staff are friendly, and cheap refreshments are available in the lobby. Muntri street is much quieter than Chulia street, and less traffic makes it better for walking to Penang Road (around 5 minutes' walk)

I found Star Lodge to be far superior to the many other backpackers and guesthouses in the area for around the same price.

Stayed here for 2 nights while in Penang and chose the AC room for 45MR per night. The room had a double bed, window, AC and fan, table and chairs and hot showers. The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our arrival. This whole guesthouse is really really clean. They even provided you with insect spray though we never had to use it. Hot showers were lovely and there are communal showers if you prefer to use them on the first floor.

The location is really central and just around the corner from the food court which is a nice play to eat. The wifi can be a little bit dodgy and doesn't all work in the rooms but works most of the time downstairs. There is one TV downstairs but the area can be quite busy so it was sometimes noisy. Overall, very good option for Georgetown.

Location excellent, surrounding streets are very charming and with great GT vibe (nice bars, you will be also able to get an espresso there). Rooms and bathrooms clean. Our first accomodation in Malaysia that wasnt smelly. Very cheap beer at the reception, VERY helpfull staff. Definitely recommended, would stay again.

If you look for a safe, clean and quiet place to stay, this is it. The location is fantastic, right in the middle of Georgetown, withing walking distance of Little India, Prangi Mall etc.
But because it is not located on one of the main streets, it is very quiet, no traffic noise.
The bathroom/Toilet is quite small and Asian style, where you shower in the middle of the bathroom and get everything wet. But it is en suite. If you prefer a bigger shower, there is some general ones that anybody can use.
The staff is very helpful and friendly and I felt very safe there.
I stayed in a fan room for rm 40. It is nothing fancy but for the price it was good value.
I will definately stay there again next time I'm in Penang.

For 45 Ringgit per night my wife and I got a double room with a clean, firm bed, private bathroom, overhead fan, A/C, and a table with two chairs. The room was also clean and quite spacious. What more does a backpacker/ budget traveller want or need?

It is a bit of a do-it-yourself place in that if you want clean towels or a roll of toilet paper you need to go ask, but this is not a big deal in the slightest.

The guys working the desk were also very well informed on attractions, directions, and bus schedules, which helped us tremendously. Very well located, this hotel is an ideal base for exploring both Georgetown and the entire island of Penang. We stayed nine nights.

Nice and helpful people working there, the place is located close to the historical Fortress of the city and sorrounded by nice and cheap places to eat.

The place is just basic, decent room with shower. A good thing is that there's always somebody working there, so you probably won't have to be worried about the safety of your room.
