Superlatives followed by more superlatives! We would like to extend a huge thanks to the owners Jo and Jim and also to Erlyn (not Eileen!!), Juliet and Raj for their hospitality. This heritage property has been sympathetically restored to a very high standard and is meticulously maintained. The pool area, garden and common areas are breath-taking considering Clove Hall is a 10 / 15 minute walk from the heart of George Town. We stayed in The Clove Suite which is spacious to the extreme, furnished and decorated with local antiques and complemented by a massive and unique inside / outside bathroom. The option of either western style breakfast cooked on-site or alternatively local breakfast which Raj will organise works very well. The advice and assistance we received from Jo and Jim throughout our stay was invaluable. If you are looking for a memorable place to stay in George Town we could not recommend Clove Hall highly enough.

Room Tip: Spoil yourself - The Clove Suite.

Clove Hall surpassed all of our expectations. We stayed there for the first part of our honeymoon, and it most certainly was a haven we will not forget. The Clove suit was absolutely beautiful, spacious and airy with an open air bathroom. The gardens and pool were perfectly manicured, and we wish we had more time just to relax and take in the laid back and luxurious atmosphere here. Breakfast in the garden was just delightful with the most delicious local fruit. On top of this Jim and Jo, the owners were such a warm and vivacious couple. They made us feel so welcome, and helped make our time there so special. We would love to go back - it's a real gem, with a heart. Thank you, from Helen and Khuong

We love the colonial splendour of Clove Hall. This was the second time we have stayed with Jim and Jo at Clove Hall. The first time everyone was so welcoming to the couple of Aussie guys, that when we came back to Penang, we naturally chose the same place again. It was just as good as the first time.

Jo, Jim and the staff are all attentive, helpful, friendly and very courteous. It really adds to the experience to be able to learn about their lives and have them ask you about yours. They became friends even in just the few days we were there.

The place is an elegantly restored, two storey colonial home. However, it's been augmented with all you need to be really comfy – aircon in the guest rooms, pool, excellent bathrooms. Everything is generously proportioned, spotlessly clean and well-maintained. The common areas are wide open to the garden and a wonderful colonial ambience. Brekky is served in the garden, by the pool, under the porch, or in the common lounge/dining area. It just depends on your mood and the weather. For us it was under the front porch overlooking the garden, which is especially nice when it rains. And brekky - either local or western (we tried both) - is delicious and very nicely presented in keeping with the origins of the building.

Although it's just beyond the edge of the world heritage area, the location suits us to a tee. We can easily walk to the places we need to visit and there are lots of good eating options within about 10 minutes walk. We shared ideas for eating options and our experiences with all the staff. They gave us some really good tips. We used the pool at least twice each day - once before heading out in the morning, and then again after returning in the afternoon. You can do it easily when the pool is right by your room. An afternoon iced tea by the pool is wonderful too.

Given that we have family reasons for visiting Penang from time to time, we'll be visiting Clove Hall again for sure.

Clove hall residence is a wonderful charming traditional house with six guestrooms. The former clove estate residence has been renovated to a very high standard by keeping all original features and charm. It is not a hotel, it is much better. The owners make you feel like being home, like visiting family. They are knowledgeable and wonderful. The ensuite rooms are big, comfortable and quite. Jalan Clove Hall is a quite residential street and we easily walked to Georgetown (Komtar) and Gurney drive. Many restaurants and food stalls are close by. The staff is always smiling, helpful and soon become good friends. A great experience, a wonderful time and we will come back next time we are in Penang.

This is our second visit to Clove hall, and truly feel that it is a home away from home.We loved it so much that we booked immediately after our first visit .It has a great relaxing atmosphere and the staff cannot do enough.
Although it is not right in the centre it is no more than 13myr taxi journey to anywhere you need to go...for us as Australians that equates to $4.I hardly think there is anyone that would complain at this rate.
The mushrooms at breakfast are my favourite.xxx
we love that we could stay in and Raj would order Thai food from around the corner and they provide the crockery ...so it really is like your home.
The rooms are faubluous and although I love a bath,in the heat of Penang a shower is really more helpful.(great pressure on the shower)
We love Jo+Jim+george,
You can be as formal or informal as you like in this beautiful environment.
we cant wait to visit again in February....

You feel like been in a plantation house with all the luxury decoration, good books, a pristine swimming pool, a lush garden and the warmth service and company you could have in the world !
Erleane, Juliette and Raj are fantastic, always smiling and making you comfortable. Jim and Joe are very nice, making time to assist you with the tips about the island and history. Breakfast is fantastic, in the garden, with a selection you can choose from. The flyer they provide about the island is the best touristic guidance you could ask for. There are lots of things to learn from this amazing couple, who put their life experience and good taste at the service of their guests.
Perfect place for our 10th wedding anniversary """

We were a bit disappointed when we arrived at Clove Hall to find that its a long walk or 10 minute drive from the old part of Georgetown. However, all our disappointment faded away very quickly once we had settled in. Clove Hall is just lovely in every way. On arriving we were greeted very warmly by Jo and Jim Lim the owners, Raj the second in command and Juliet and Erlene the two adorable household staff. Not to mention George the poodle. After a lovely welcome and an even lovelier ice cold lychee juice we were shown to our room. We had booked through i-escape who ensured a room upgrade if available. Hoewever Jo told us this wasn't the case and we were taken to cinammon. After initially being a bit disgruntled as we were hoping to be upgraded to clove room (with a bathtub) we forgot about this very quickly as cinammon was just lovely. A huge king bed sat upon a stone base and tastefully decorated, the room was big enough for two kids (13 and 7) each in their own bed, plus a baby cot. The bathroom is huge, with lovely red tiles and a huge and very powerful shower. Complimentary and delicious smelling toileteries are also added and a nice touch. We went straight to the pool to hang out before dinner. Its a great pool for kids, dark slate infinity style lap pool, and you really are in a tranquil setting with birds and trees. Shame that there are some office towers right behind the building, but we tried to block these out visually! The pool was right outside our room which made it so much easier with a young family. And although there were other guests staying, we were the only ones to use it as far as we know.
Although there isn't a fridge in the rooms, we were allowed to use the main fridge in the kitchen to store our baby foods and beers, and could come and go as we pleased. The inside of the house is stunning and very tastefully decorated in Malay/colonial style. We had breakfast here each morning, lovingly prepared by Juliet and Erlene. Breakfast is the only meal served, which has a good and a bad side... Good because it forces you to go out and explore, but bad beause there is no option to stay and relax past mid-morning. However, drinks are always available.
Clove Hall is about 10 mins drive from Love Lane/Chulia Street. We didn't walk it because of the baby, but would probably take 30 mins ish. This is the only shame about Clove Hall, although the plus side is that you do escape the busy areas. We ate out every night leaving the baby at Clove Hall with the more than capable team. They charge 20MYR per hour and both Raj, Juliet and Erlene each did one night. It was lovely for our older two to come out with us in the evening and have a bit of attention and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the team for babysitting, 2000% trustworthy in every way.
At the end of our 4 nights I can honestly say that we were very sad to leave and head to Langkawi. What makes Clove Hall so special is the welcome and service. Of course its a stunning house with gorgeous rooms and a lovely pool. But the owners Jo and Jim have really got the level of service just perfect. We felt looked after and cared for without feeling crowded. It goes beyond the regular B+B offer by feeling more like a temporary home and as a guest you are invited into this lovely family. If we were asked to be critical or advise on any element, there are just a couple of teeny tiny things that would have been nice... A fridge in the room so we had somewhere to store the baby things and booze. And a bathtub. There is space to put a freestanding rolltop, in front of the french windows in the bathroom and this would be a nice touch. But we are bath people and others may not care. It certainly didn't ruin our stay not having a tub!
Finally for anyone wanting to explore Georgetown we can heartily recommend the following: FOOD - hawker stalls on Chulia Street, try the curry mee and the apom (sweet pancakes), China House for live music and great cocktails and cakes, Kerbaya at Seven Terraces for a special dinner. WALKING - Love Lane, Chulia, Campbell street and Armenian Street are all lovely to walk around. Look out for the incredible street art supported by the government. SIGHTS - Cheong Fat Tze house we found the tour too long but the house is lovely. The butterfly park was fun for kids and we ate at Monkey Tree a great Thai place next door. Clan jettys are amazing also.
A special thanks finally to everyone at Clove Hall. Thanks for looking after us so so well.

Room Tip: We had cinammon which is ground floor on the far right of the building and direct view and access to...

Thank you for your review we are so pleased that you all enjoyed your stay with us here at Clove Hall though actually you were in the Ginger Suite! Cinnamon is one of our upstairs suites.
Regarding iescape upgrades it is offered 'if available'. However we have only six suites in total, we were fully booked and you were already in one of our higher grade suites. We have only two suites suitable for a family of five Clove and Ginger.
We would love to 'move' the office buildings but fortunately as you say they are at the back so we can ignore them.
We are sorry to hear of your initial disappointment on location but pleased it did not spoil your stay. We do have a map on our website showing our location and proximity to town - its about 20 minutes walk but we can call taxi's at any time and local trips are very reasonably priced.
Just a mention about babysitting this is not a service we usually offer. If guests request this of our staff and the staff are willing, it is at the discretion of the management. Payment is between guest and staff and not a fixed rate.
Of our six suites only one has a bath, we feel showers are more eco-friendly, especially in the tropical climate. This is also a major influencing factor for no fridges or tea and coffee making in our rooms. The other is we wish to provide a dedicated and very personal service to all our guests.
We hope you all enjoyed Langkawi. Perhaps we will see you here again in the future!
