“Perfect value, good location.”
Reviewed October 11, 2010

We stayed there for a 2 nights stop in Penang and frankly, for something like 35€ per night, we cannot wait more than what we got... Of course, this hotel is for some details a bit out of age but the size of the room, the average confort is really approaching a real european 4 stars hotel.
Service was ok but restaurant staff was not friendly as they were mainly focusing there attention on groups that were confercing in the hotel.

Direct level 1 link to Penang Plaza (with Giant & Guardian Pharmacy as anchor tenants) , with free shuttle to Gurney Plaza, easy for me to drop by to do last minute shopping for diapers, milk powder etc. Hot wok (good peranakan food) is only 2 shops away from penang plaza.

hotel is within walking distance (about 10 minutes) to New world food court, which my kids love as it has their favourite yong tau foo, fishball noodles, (what’s a visit to penang, without
trying out all the delicious local food)

As for me, i prefer the famous char kway teow which is about 15 minutes walk in another direction at Lorong Selamat (off Jalan Burma/Macallister). but be prepared for long wait for good food. usualy i'd order other food from the outside roadside stalls such as popiah and kway teow thng 1st while waiting for my char kway teow.

The staff are friendly and most willing to help, and hotel amenities such as shampoo, etc are all provided.

For the price that we’re paying, I feel the hotel is great, with spacious and clean rooms. (very important to me as I’ve once stayed in a hotel in georgetown that had ants crawling over my packed bakery items by next morning). thankfully after seeing the reviews of other guests, i've requested for rooms on higher non-smoking floors, which they aceded. and my requests for hot kettle, king size bed, etc are all done when i check-into hotel

For families with young children, hotels with swimming pools and bath tubs are a must, to cool the heels of restless kids. Thankfully Hotel royal has both.Note: swimming pools closes at 8pm as they don't have life guards.

The breakfast spread is quite diverse, with the common kids favorites such as muffins, omelette, rice krispies, honey stars etc as well as asian spread such as bee hoon, nasi lemak (so-so only), bao, samosa, curry puff, etc (depends on which day you visit as asian items are different daily).

Both myself and my partner stayed at the Hotel royal Penang for two nights from the 5th of September. The staff seemed friendly and helpful and the main entrance looks nice which is a bit of a misconception of what the hotel is like on the upper floors. As soon as we left the lift we could smell damp in the hallways, once in our room the smell was even worse, there was also what can only be described as dried blood on the curtains, the sheets on the bed were grey (obviously hadnt been updated for a while) and the general cleaniness of the room was something to be desired. However the breakfast was ace and the beds were comfortable!!

Hotel Royale is good place to explore Georgetown. We stayed in a non-smoking room on the 15th floor. If you are very sensitive to sound, the music from the lounge can be disturbing. Hey, considering it is a 20-storey hotel, it's amazing how the sound travels up. Toiletries are basic but adequate & I like the multi-clothes stand. Buffet breakfast has the beef rendang on Sun, sambal ikan bilis on Mon & curry chicken on Tue. They have a "Action Counter" where you can have your fix of eggs done your style & noodles soup. Go through the office exit that can lead to Jalan Nagore where you see Continental Bakery for scrumptous pandan tart & apricot bread. Go through the front exit & next door is Penang Plaza that has Giant supermarket & Guardian. The hotel is located not in the heart of the city centre but given the many exit points, there are many places to explore. Check out the famous Ghee Hiang tau siar pneah at Burmah Place which is the freshest smoothest I have tasted. This hotel has gone through many name change/owners from Merlin to Sheraton to Dorsett & Royale for now. The service staff in general are eager to please & help & speak well of the hotel.

Requested a room on non-smoking floor way in advance but didn't get one. Our room on 5th floor too near to karaoke longue /pub, noise could still be heard every nite. On one nite there was shouting presumably from drunken men and it woke me up. Aircon thinned out after midnight so had I had sleepless nights. Complained about it and got another room, though they tried to discourage me by hinting that they were 100% full yet I was able to move within 10 minutes. The new room was worse - broken down mini bar and safe, they had to get a new fridge and in place of the safe I was asked to store my valuables in their safety deposit. The wardrobe door couldn't shut fully so light glared from it when we slept. The face towel hook in the toilet broke from the wall with a slight tap.
Breakfast could be let go without regret as the good stuff like rendang to go with the coconut rice would be gone after 9 without refill. They ensured the boring stuff like Quaker oats! was filled to the brim.
The shuttle to gurney was ok but there is 103 or 101 2 mins outside the hotel that you can take. The location was not near to anywhere interesting not the bus stop for the free city shuttle that ply from komtar to jetty.
The channels on tv were boring. The movies were from the 70s and 80s like the lost boys and towering inferno!
The stay was bad and the main thing that redeemed my holiday in Penang was the efficient Rapid Penang busses and the big sale at Gurney Plaza. When I return to Penang I will stay near teluk bahang where the nature spots and beaches are near and the bus 101 can always bring you to downtown within 20-25 mins. The best part is there is also bus 102 to ferry you to the airport from telok bahang.

We tend to travel on a tight budget and thus love to find a bargain. For £30.00 a night this was a steal. The rooms were a little tired but they were large, clean and comfortable with good beds and good central air con.

Staff were pleasant and the breakfast buffet of an excellent standard. The position of the hotel was a slight draw back but it was still only a 10 minte walk to Komptor centre or the older parts of town. There were plenty of restaurants, bars and food hawker centres in the vicinity.
