“A bit dissapointing”
Reviewed March 7, 2010

We had booked this hotel months previously, we booked a heritage room and it was not what we expected. It had everything it said it would only it was very shabby. The bed was comfy, the fridge was great, air con very necessary, a great balcony overlooking the pool. Maid came every day and made bed changed sheets regular and clean towels every day. The towels were small and threadbare for first 2 days and then we got new large bath towels, next day back to the threadbare grey things, then I asked the maid for big towels and got them from then on in. We were here for 10 days and it was after a few days I noticed that the bed and towels were really all that was getting done, the toilet and sink were cleaned by me. Breakfast was a bit of a hit or miss, we asked for eggs and toast, got eggs ,toast and cold mashed potatos? Took a while but eventually got the mash taken off. A busy weekend with lots of asians, we were told breakfast was curry or noodles, told them not for us so we got only one egg instead of usual 2, after that only got 1 egg anyway. I cannot fault the reception staff, whatever we asked for was done, they helped with wake up calls taxis etc and on out last day woke us up with 8 yes 8 slices of toast but no tea or coffee? We enjoyed our stay and did not complain as it had good and bad points, the pool was great and we had it mostly to ourseleves except for the busy weekend.

Not a bad place to stay. The staff were all very friendly - in fact the breakfast boys were apt to get in the way, constantly ''hovering'' and bringing unasked for coffee and juice. Quite sweet really, and not really a bad thing, except that i'm a misery in the morning!!! The rooms were OK , the only problem being every other rooms Air Con vibrated a bit through the walls. The pool was OK but some more comfortable seats would help. I'd stay again.

Stayed at the 1926 Heritage Hotel for 2 nights. We initially booked for only 1 night but extended our stay to 2 nights. This is a delightful little hotel, very very clean, decent room sizes - not too small and not huge, has all the basic amenities you would need.

RECEPTION
Check-in at the reception was fast, easy, no frills. They are not overly polite, but they aren't rude either. Just so-so and we didn't mind. We were not expecting much from reception anyway, just wanted our keys to get to the room. Check-out was pleasant and fast too. When I extended the other night, that was done very quickly and promptly as well.

ROOM
Room is a nice size. The one we stayed in (240) was in a corner and had a Queen size bed. These corner rooms are nice because when you open your door there is a little area for shoes followed by steps going downwards into your actual room. You will then find your bed, a small TV, a wardrobe and dressing table + side table by the bed, and a electric kettle to boil water. There is sufficient room and space for 2 people to comfortably live in. The bathroom is large for a budget hotel. The only downside was the thin looking towels in various shades of white (some older, some newer) and the shower holder was spoilt although the shower head itself was working. Very minor issues for me personally and my bf did not mind either. Overall we were very pleased as the room is extremely clean, some mosquitoes but only if you open the windows at night.

Caught a glimpse of the other rooms on our way in and out during our stay. Some rooms have a large and nice balcony facing the car park and pool. Very pleasant and nice if you want the extra space and fridge. (Our room had no fridge, but we didn't really need one)

HOTEL AND SURROUNDINGS
It is quite a walk from the reception to our room, but we didn't mind. The walkway is nice and charming, The garden between the main block and the rooms is sweet. There were no unpleasant or musty smell throughout even though this is a heritage hotel, it has been very well kept and is very clean. The pool looks good though we did not swim. There was ample parking but we stayed during non-peak season so can't say what it's like when they have higher occupancy. The hotel has a hair salon, spa, two restaurants - one malay and another chinese. Did not try their food so cannot comment on that.

BED & OTHERS
Bed was acceptable. We slept well on both nights, though aircond was cold and blanket was slightly thin. I was glad I brought an extra blanket from home. Which reminds me hot water from the shower was too hot and there was no way to adjust that. I got used to it though. No hair dryer in the rooms I found out, but was informed I could get one from the reception if I paid a RM50 deposit. This is due to people spoiling them and stealing them in the past so I do understand why they have this policy. There was adequate lighting in the rooms at night, TV channels were few - local channels.

OVERALL
Overall I would say this is a perfect hotel if your intention is to be out all day doing stuff and only needing a place to stay a couple of nights. Comfort level is subjective, but for me and my bf personally we were VERY comfortable and could stay anywhere from 2- 5 nights easily without complaints. We had no issues with cleanliness or space, no issues with the bed or the room itself. They could do with some new higher quality towels though and better hot water control for the bathrooms (it was too hot).

I would definitely recommend this hotel to a friend who wanted something basic, clean and charming without the luxury of high priced hotels. I would also definitely return and stay again. Told my parents about the place and they are going to try it out the next time they visit Penang.

A wonderful little hotel, strategic location, 7 eleven is a few steps away. Delicious Nasi Kandar across the road and lots of hawker stalls nearby so food is never a problem!

If you're looking for a cheap place to stay that's still comfortable and clean - THIS IS IT!
