“French cuisine has finally arrived”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

First time reviewing at tripadvisor, but visit to Garvy's was compelling enough reason to write. We were there on a holiday weekend and only three out of the dozen tables were occupied. A little apprehensive, we took a look at the menu (Have to say, not impressed with the ipad menus - highly incongruous to the setting). Prices were on the exorbitant side for Ipoh patrons, so we decided to only order main courses. Happily, there were no snooty waiters to poo-pooh our decision.

Amuse bouches were quickly served by someone we assumed to be either manager or chef, who introduced the dishes and we tucked into mini smoked salmon sandwiches and butter so delicious I had to ask for more warm bread to spread it on. (And warm bread was indeed promptly brought out with no extra charges, something that always makes customers feel appreciative)

When we were done, they brought out our main. Two cod dishes, a lamb rack and a squid-ink pasta with scallops (my fave) were all served together so we can all start at the same time. Not cooks by profession so it's hard to spin words to describe how tantalizing the dishes were. But we have eaten enough good food abroad to recognize quality food, so we were very impressed by how good and true each of the dishes were to French cuisine, the sauces were so rich and amazing and leaves one wanting for more.

We have been to other high-priced restaurants in Ipoh serving western cuisine, but the food had always left us feeling a little duped. To be fair, their prices were more reasonable but the quality were nowhere comparable to the cuisine they were supposedly representing, so we dined understanding that compromise.

At Garvy's the prices are a little cut-throat, but the food and dining experience makes up for it. So you do get what you pay for. I, for one, am rooting for it to stick around. As a fellow Ipohan, it's a good feeling knowing true French cuisine has arrived in town.

Bon chance, Garvy's.

“average fine dining”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

Since it's the first french fine dining in Ipoh, we were curious and excited to experience the cuisine. the exterior and interior design of the restaurant are very unique. but the roof didn't seem to be practical during rainy day, the rain drops created loud noises on the roof. You basically have to talk louder and you can't hear any music at all, which has kind of spoiled the mood of indulging in french dining. Apart from that, the wash room is located outside of the dining area. so, you have to take an umbrella in order to walk from the dining area to the wash room.

Apart from the design, the service was good and not snooty. the staff was friendly and definitely able to explain the menu in detail.. however, when the number of guests increased, they could not really serve every customers well. Even though they surprised us with the menu, which is written in iPad, it's quite embarrassing for a french dining restaurant to tell the guests that the restaurant only have 4 iPad! perhaps, a traditional menu would be a good plan B for the guests.

The food was OKay. Personally, i like one of the starters "Tiramisu crab" and the "strawberry tiramisu". Other than that, the main courses didn't really suit our liking.

Hello Alyznin,

Thank you very much for your review.
We take our customer comment and reviews very seriously, we will do our best to improve from your kind comment.

Our menu changes most likely in a monthly basis, so our customer can enjoy a wide range of food without eating the same every time at our restaurant. Sorry that the main course did not suit your taste, may i know which main course you had?
