We were in Ipoh for holiday and were looking for a halal version of the famous Ipoh chicken rice to have on our way home. A quick Google search yielded several glowing blog reviews on this restaurant, so we decided to give it a go.
Verdict? The rice was tasty, but slightly undercooked (eating "crunchy" rice is certainly a.. novel experience for Asians.) We tried both the steamed and roasted chicken, which was decent but nothing extraordinary.
What we liked: the deep-fried tofu with oyster sauce; so excellent we ordered a second serving! While we were indifferent about the other fare, we would come back *just* for this dish. Price-wise, the meal wasn't expensive, although it's certainly more pricey than eating at a hawker lah.
One thing we did notice, is that it seemed very popular as a take-out option with the locals. Food was running out of the restaurant on a constant basis!
All in all, The Chicken Rice Shop restaurant chain makes far superior fare if you're looking for halal Hainanese chicken rice, but seeing as how there isn't one in Ipoh town, this does well enough to satisfy chicken rice cravings + religious requirements.
