The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat

Reviewed June 24, 2013

Banjaran Hotsprings resort is truly an oasis of calm - I felt all my stress and worries melt away once I arrrived at the resort. It is a far cry from the old Tambun hotsprings - but the lush surrounding with the linestone hills and caves remain, and is made more majestic with some man-made landscaping. It is also everything they describe it to be espcially the luxurious comfort of our garden villa with its private plunge pool.
We had planned this trip some months back and took a package that included meals at Pomelo and Jeff's Cellar as well as a spa treat. Everything was simply amazing from the service to the ambience and comfort. We could have spent a few more days enjoying the facilities - our villas, the yoga sessions, Jeff's Cellar (breathtaking restaurant in a limestone cave), steam cave, hot and cold dipping pools, Dr Fish spa, crystal cave and the jewel in the crown? - the Spa. All of us were very happy with our massage therapists who were well-trained and worked their magic well on us.
The GM, Ms Lyba Godio and her team are doing an amazing job with the place and in making their guests feel at home. The staff go out of their way to help, and was pretty resourceful in helping us take pictures and solving problems, even late into the night!
We think that the fish spa do not have enough fishes - they don't "bite" in the evening after having their fill throughout the day. And one other issue we had were the monkeys - there could be more signages on their presence and what not to do - we had monkeys raiding our villa (as we had left some food out on the table) and "harassing" one of us on the common walkway.
Despite that It's an ideal place to spend some quality time with either your loved ones or with your friends. I'd go back there again!

Dear RaqsSharqi,

A very sincere ‘Thank You’ for the amazing review you provided for us. You caught our attention with the first line, ‘oasis of calm’, which is such a beautiful description of our retreat. We will be sure to inform Miss Lyba of your kind words of her and the hardworking staff of the retreat, it has been a great pleasure to have served you and made your stay memorable.

We however are unfortunate to learn of the mishaps with our 'furry neighbours' at our resort. We will try to improve the facilities to help lessen these incidents without harming them. Thank you once again for your feedback and review. We hope to be able to welcome you back again in the future.

With best regards from all of us at The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat.

It is about one week since we left Banjaran, but my mind is still there. Missing the place the moment we stepped out.

It is located strategically in Ipoh, we had out dinner at the food court near Jusco which is about 10 min drive from Banjaran. There you will get to enjoy all the local delicacies except the chicken rice.

Me and mum have a great time in Banjaran. We have a fun enjoying the facilities especially the Fish Spa. The laughter and time I spent with my mother at Banjaran, seeing her so relax and happy.. it is priceless.

Needless to say, their service is top notch from the moment we stepped in. Our garden villa is perfect. The service personnel in Banjaran really did a good job. Kudos!!

Room Tip: Garden Villa is more spacious

Dear Joanne C,

Thank you for such an excellent review of your stay with us. We tend to receive reviews of memorable stays of couples and honeymooners but seldom that of mothers and daughters. Your review really touched us, especially the part of ‘seeing her so relax and happy’ melts our hearts. Besides hearing the sound of nature such as birds and the waterfall, we should include laughter as one of the many rejuvenating sounds you can hear at The Banjaran.

Thank you once again for this wonderful review and we hope that you will return for another visit with your mother soon.

With best regards from all of us at The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat.

I had a back injury recently and decided to try Banjaran to rest and relax. I had a very good experience there. The driver who fetched us from the KL airport was good and he made the 2 hours drive very pleasant by sharing with us about the area. Upon arrival, I was given an almost new wheelchair as the staff saw that I was struggling with my walking stick, without even my asking for one.The reception was friendly and helpful. The check-in was speedy as the room was ready even though we arrived early. The villa was clean and spacious with 2 pools. Everything is provided for except swimming costume. Even slippers were provided. I was able to have 24 hours dip in the hot spring Jacuzzi pool. Spa was good and professional. The medical consultation was good and informative. Food was healthy and tasty. surrounded by mountains. Good wine cellar in a cave. Many good caves to explore. Need to climb if want to explore the caves. Good food outside resort which is in Ipoh city and 20 minutes away by cab.

Room Tip: The Garden villa has more privacy and a bigger dip pool than the lake view villa. There are villa ne...

Where do I even start? There are already too many photos from the other contributors and I do not intend to upload the same great pictures again.

I came to this tiny retreat heaven with the worst mental exhaustion ever. With the current hassle and bustle at work, I almost didn't make it to this small jewel in the heart of Tambun. We reached the lobby at about 1 pm, the best time for a Malaysia's month of May sun to shine and to grill everything in its path. Yes, we failed to remember that the check in time is at 3 pm.

Nonetheless, we were actually greeted with frozen-cold towels and some herbal drink to cool us down, while the receptionist worked on checking us in. Within 45 minutes, our room was ready for us. Off we went to the healthiest vacation ever, healthy surrounding, healthy food and healthy activities! Even our ears were on vacation as there are a no-kid in the retreat premise and also mobile phone on vibrate mode policies! How cool was that? :D

We didn't waste our time and immediately booked the Banjaran Signature Massages for two. Yes, please do book your massage ahead. We were just lucky that the kind staffs at the spa managed to jiggle our reservations through the tight schedule. Next time, book the villa and book the spa!

I need to iterate here and I may repeat again in the later paragraph that for the Banjaran Signature Massage is one hell of a one and a half hours of great massage. I have been having a tight shoulder blades problem and I had have more than a dozen, multiple types of massage therapies and still it could not fully cure my middle back ache. A huge thanks to Lyana and Farah who have successfully worked their magic touches on our backs.

Things To Do:
1. Dr. Garra Fura Fish. Visit them and they'll feast on your feet.
2. Steam Cave - Spend some time in it to burn some fat! :)
3. Meditation Cave - It is a place that you can hang out at to find your inner strength.
4. Jeff Cellar - Cheers!
6. Crystal Cave
7. Reflexology Pebble Path
8. Dipping Pools (Hot and Cold)

Heck! Just enjoy the villa where there is no lifesaver guard on duty to chase you out of the pool after 10 pm. We did just that!

Thanks, Ms Lybanor P. Godio, who took the time to welcome us during check in and to send the happy us off during check out. I did go into the retreat feeling so physically and mentally sore but I came out rejuvenated and thinking of going back to the retreat again soon, I hope! 

Room Tip: Villa 413 - closest to the spa. Garden Villa - much more spacious and quieter.

Ah! The Banjaran, what can we say? It's absolutely perfect, a little slice of heaven lost in the jungle. We stayed over for 3 nights in the garden villas, which are fabulous. The sights are breathtaking and the facilities fit in perfectly and are properly luxurious. A massive and ultra comfy bed, nice pool and really cool jacuzzi all at our service in the room made us forget we were surrounded by forest.
All the staff was really friendly, and we really felt relaxed and at peace for the whole stay.
Our favorite places were probably the steam cave, Dr fish and the spectacular wine cellar which is an absolute must see.
The food was also very good, it might get tiring for a long stay but for our four days there it was just perfect.
The only thing that didn't blow our mind was the jungle hike, we were hoping for something a little more on the wild side, but no harm done, it didn't take very long so we were back to bliss in a jiffy!
The manager was super friendly and ended up giving us really good advice for the rest of our trip over at KL, the restaurant staff was also very attentive, everyone at the Banjaran just made us feel really really welcome.
It's absolutely worth the trip if you are anywhere close to Malaysia!

Room Tip: The garden villas are well worth the upgrade!

This resort provided us with the perfect retreat. Total relaxation with great attention to detail.

The unique and tranquil setting in which the villas and gardens are set is just stunning. Surrounded by monolithic limestone stacks and underpinned by geo-thermal streams providing natural hot lakes and steam rooms. The place just seems like it is a set for a fairy tale or wonderland film.

The villas are individually designed, our's had it's own natural hot-spring jacuzzi bath and a good size pool. The out door living area was larger than most 5* hotel rooms, well appointed and a great place to just chill. The double bathroom was very spacious and well designed. The bedroom, with it's oversize and very comfortable bed, was just perfect.

The restaurant lived up to all our expectations, having browsed the menu at breakfast, well presented perfectly cooked food that harnessed the best of Asian food prepared with the obvious skill of the wonderful head chef, Abdelhak Bourenane.

Jeff's cellar, even if you have never tasted wine or ever intend to you must visit the cellar. The cellar was hewn from the bare rock and is just so impressive even if you do not partake.

There is a very well equipped gym and the spa is top quality.

We have just one complaint, the whole resort is advertised as a smoke free zone, however we had cause to move table in the restaurant as the table next to us were merrily puffing away on their cigars. Even though we made our feelings clearly felt they just kept puffing away and the staff, in typically asian fashion, only offered the compromise of a table far away from the smoke rather than enforce the rule.

Jeffrey Cheah the developer and owner should be applauded on his visionary use of this previously unused , well since the Japanese soldiers moved out after WWII, jewel in Malaysia's crown, and Lybanor the resort manager should be congratulated on a job done to perfection.

One of a kind relaxation holiday in a very unique location , right in the forest . The resort has a geothermal lake supplied with 3 million litres of 65degree C water naturally everday & the same is used to give amzing experiences in the villa ( only 25 of them ) in the natural steam cave , in the bathing pots adjacent to the lake , refloxology pool & what not ...
Top 4 attractions
a)Villas Opt for the garden villa as they are larger : all villas have a pool & a outdoor jacuzzi with natural hot water :Total privacy means one can be completely one with nature all day & night long & spending the night in a hot water jacuzzi looking at the skys & mountains is one amazing experience .
b)Spa : dr Santosh the magician will take you to another level of relaxation
c) Dr Fish pool : a large pool with Dr fish to take care of your legs all days long if you so desire
d) Steam cave :a large cave with natural hotwater creating steam wow !!!
there are others too including a splendid short jungle walk , meditation cave , balcony ( if you can brave a few bats ) , the bathing pots on the geothermal lake .
what can improve : the restaurant menu is quite limited especially the lunch & dinner & not really value for money . ( not to worry a big mac & local ipoh food is a 15 min walkaway )
Service : outstanding starting with their rgroup business dev manager John who on a query even before our booking put us in touch with the GM of the resort Lyba : a super efficient busy bee who went the extra mile to make sure we were really comfortable. Dr Santosh at the spa a treasure house of knowledge & skills & always with a smile , pablo at the restaurant with very practical inputs , Vithia with her service & last but not the least nazree the security personel who took us on a jungle walk , he was so much fun & great company .
Travel tips : take the yo yo /star shuttle from KLIA or LCCT its a 3.5 hr ride on a superb highway to ipoh & a short cab ride from there to resort ( Bus fare 42RM/person & taxi 25 RM significantly cheaper than the 600RM in case one wants resort pickup : use the savings for some more spa sessions:))

Room Tip: Take the garden villa over the water villa , villas have a snazzy wristband as key that is also wate...
