“Too much prepared to tourism!”
Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

I should say that I was really happy to go to the jungle in Taman Negara. We went by bus from KL to Jerantut and went directly to NKS Hostel to arrange the Jungle transfer and activities. We went to Kuala Tahan by boat for almost 4 hours, it was a really nice trip but maybe quite long, anyway strongly recommendable to do at least one way and comming back by road with the public bus. Once there, I started to be dissapointed because the tours and activities are too much touristic in my opinion, and also I was dissapointed with the accomodation. All the accomodations there (except the Muniara Resort) are really bad, I think they offer basic and bad options because they know once you are there you will spend the night anywhere cause you have not any other option. We couldn't do the Skywalk because of the weather but it seems to be nice, all the other activities seems to be too much done specially for the tourists. At night we went to get dinner on a floating restaurant and we loved it!
In my opinion is a good option go to Taman Negara but with not much expectations. Take into account also if you went on low season (Monzons season) that the weather could be a bog problem to do the activities.

“Must DO”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

Visiting Taman Negara is probably one of the best thing to do in Malaysia. After a 4hours boat (pirogue) you can reach the national park. Trekking in the jungle, rafting and having dinner in floating restaurants. We staid 2 days (more than enough) over there and really enjoyed the authenticity and wildness of the place. Worth going. For accommodation go to Rainbow hotel in Kuala Tahan. I guess we had a lot of fun also because it was not the touristic season.

“The great national park”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

We took the boat ride from Kuala Tembeling to Kuala Tahan. This ride is ~70km long and take 3 hours. If you have luck you will see other animals as monkeys, cows or buffalos.

As we arrived in Kuala Tahan we immediately booked a tour, for 40RM each, for the Canopy Walkway and the Jungle Tracking. Thus far the fee is OK to keep the local business running ... but this trip can easily done by yourself.

Go to Openstreetmap site and download the hiking map for Malaysia. For the Taman Negara there are a lot of trails listed which can be used on your e.g. Garmin device. As you can see on my photo "Canopy Walkway & Jungle Tracking 6329" you can walk up the Teresek Hill, on the other side down and along the river until you reach the Mutiara Resort (in the photo: Park Centre 1). In total ~4km and ~360hm and around 3h. Take 1L water for each person with you. Don't expect to see other animals than termites. We have had the luck to the a lot of wild sows. Others have the luck to see a tapir.

For other activities like Shooting Rapids or visit the Orang Asli village we have had not enough time...
Maybe next time when my rucksack is lighter I would spend a couple of nights in the jungle.

“Sg Relau, northern entrance , Pahang”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

I went to Taman Negara via the northern entrance in Pahang. This is at Sg Relau, near Merapoh. From Merapoh it is 7 km to the park HQ. There are fan rooms and a dorm. Small shop at the park office. The toilets for the dorm were not too good, one (out of 3) was not working and the place was never cleaned during our 9 day stay. The communal shower block is a separate building and this was also not cleaned during our stay.
Not so much to do at Sg Relau as Kuala Tahan. You can visit the Kelah sanctuary by Park 4WD. Most people go to Sg Relau to climb Gng Tahan as the route is shorter than doing from K. Tahan.
It was nice to see gibbons and hornbills close to the HQ in the mornings. We had transport so were able to go out for meals in Merapoh.

“What to do in Taman Negara”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Relevant tips in order to manage your time and money and achieve a wonderful experience at Taman Negara...

GENERAL COSTS
5 MYR – Photographic licence/each machine; Bring it along while taking photos in Taman Negara
1 MYR – For permit to be in the park and you have to bring it along while in Taman Negara

RECREATION ACTIVITIES

1. Jungle Trekking

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 9:30am | Price: 50 RM
Description: “experience the Canopy Walkway; Enjoy a panoramic view of Gurung Tahan at the top of Teresek Hill.”

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 9:30am | Price: 30 RM
Description: “Jungle trekking, canopy walkway and Teresek Hill”

Opinion: MUST DO! We went alone to Bukit Indah, Lubok Simpon, and Canopy walkway. Didn’t have any problem, but there are dangerous species along! Do you really need a guide?! Well if you find a big snake you will clam of it, if you are lucky you will think it is just tourist trap..!!
Yes there are leeches even in the dry season. We didn’t saw anyone using leeches socks, and many used shorts… we bought football socks. I used it and didn’t had any trouble, my husband didn’t use and end up maybe being the only in Taman Negara beaten by leeches in the dry season, and not just by one but by two!!

2. Night Jungle walk

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 8:45pm | Price: 45 RM

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 8:30pm | Price: 20 RM

Opinion: Didn’t make it, but possible a MUST DO!

3. Night Safari

Mutiara Taman Negara
???

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 8:30pm | Price: 35 RM
Description: “Ride in a four wheel drive vehicle moving along palm oil plantations. The guide will try to locate nocturnal animals using a powerful spotlight.”

Opinion: DO! We did it because we were very tired of a 5 hour trek during the day and so not prepared to go to night jungle walk. Staff is nice and tries to find animals. But you will be seating in the roof of a jeep without any security… there are other tours going to same oil plantation so with all that noise and light animals will run away. Never the less we saw a big snake, flying skirl, leopard cat, birds, something not recognized…
It was good but not amazing!

4. Lata Berkoh

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 9:30am and 2:30pm |Price: 200 RM per boat
Description: “Enjoy panoramic views along river; swimming activity at the spectacular cascaded natural Jacuzzi; enjoy fresh water from Tahan Mountain; bird watching.”

NKS Hotel & Travel
???

Opinion: Didn’t make it, but possible a MUST DO! (but expensive!)

5. Rapids Shooting

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 10:00am and 3:00pm | Price: 60 RM

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 10:00am and 3:00pm | Price: 30 RM

Opinion: DO! After 3 hours in a boat to get to Taman Negara you steel find the river beautiful and boat trip an adventure, but not that much… In this activity you go in one small wood boat (the same you take to get to Taman Negara). You will laugh, scream and get all wet. But not feel like doing radical sport…Use swimming suit!

6. Water Rafting

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 10:00am and 3:00pm | Price: 150 RM
Description: by rubber raft

NKS Hotel & Travel
???

Opinion: Didn’t make it, but possible DO!

7. Visit Aboriginal Village

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 5:00pm | Price: 80 RM

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 10:00am and 3:00pm | Price: 40 RM

Opinion: DO! We were thinking in not doing this, we thought it would be just some “actors”, a tourist trap. But we decided to try! Overall it was a good afternoon! The guide was great and explains their away of leaving, created space for discussion and questions; we were invited to try to use their “weapon”…

8. Visit Aboriginal + Rapid Shooting

Mutiara Taman Negara
???

NKS Hotel & Travel
Time: 3:00pm | Price: 60 RM

Opinion: DO!

9. Evening market

Mutiara Taman Negara
Time: 5:30pm | Price: 50 RM
Description: Wednesday only

NKS Hotel & Travel
???

Opinion: Didn’t make it, but possible DO! (if you want to occupy your night…but it is quiet expensive when in Malaysia you can find markets everywhere)

10. Real Inner Jungle- Keniam Trail

Mutiara Taman Negara
???

NKS Hotel & Travel
Maximum of 4 days 3 nights; Prices vary according to duration and number of people from 150 (just one night for more than 4 people) to 1120 MR (3 nights for just 1 person).

Opinion: Didn’t make it, but possible a MUST DO! (we saw a group of tourists coming back from this tour, they were looking tired, dirty but very happy and with that smile like “it was one life experience”, if I had realized that option before… )
