“An escape from city life”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2013

There comes a time when you have had enough of the concrete jungle, and decided to go to a real jungle instead. You will not be disappointed with The Dusun. At only 1.5 hours drive from KL, it will bring to you a complete change in scenery. Steep slopes and careful driving aside, once you get inside The Dusun, you will forget everything you left behind.

I stayed in 2 houses for 2 different nights, due to the busy season of December. However it's a good opportunity to try out more than 1 house and get a feel of the place. It's a self service accomodation, so you get a kitchen, fridge, and other amenities like mosquito mats, hair dryer, and thankfully towels too. Meals can be catered if you don't feel like cooking. I highly recommend you try the Minangkabau meal, it was delicious.

Day 1: Berembun house. This is the house that caught my attention and the reason I signed up. You will be greeted by a glorious infinity pool overlooking the Berembun jungle, deck chairs and a quaint Malay style wooden house that sleeps 2 comfortably. It is also the nearest to the dining area for breakfasts. Make full use of the outdoor kitchen and the mosquito net to keep away unwanted insects. If the thought of insects scare you, think really hard before you commit to staying at The Dusun. Parts of the houses will be semi open air so seeing them will be inevitable. My favourite is still the pool, haha! There is an even bigger pool near the Perling houses just a short walk away.

Day 2: Tembusu house. This one is a bit more hardcore. With only 3 walls, you are really exposed to the elements. It was raining the day we were there so it will be a bit cold and damp, but the rain will only make the balcony a bit wet. There is a nice kitchen and bathroom downstairs though. Your endurance and bravery will be tested at night when the insects, moths and bugs are attracted to the lights in the house. Just be calm, and make full use of the mosquito net. You will get lovely surprises like a few fireflies flickering around the room. Gets better in the morning when u get a view of the trees when you wake up.

Overall its been a humbling and wonderful experience. Helen, her daughter Haanim and the staff there are excellent in making sure all your needs are met. Good job guys, thanks so much for having us and sharing such a lovely place with us!

Room Tip: If you are squeamish about insects or small reptiles, take note that some parts of the houses are se...

We stayed in Tembusu House only for a day as we do not have enough time in Malaysia. But the experience was amazing!!!!! Really nice Houses. Houses are really fully equiped and kitchen also equiped with all utensils. The owner is really nice and service is really good. At night it is really quite and nice. Only wish they also include jungle trekking. However, I will definitely recommend this place to everyone. Thanks a lot for a nice stay and experience.

If you appreciate nature and understand what loving nature means, you will love The Dusun. This resort has only 5 villas, set in 13.5 acres of land with large matured trees - some bearing fruit, some flowers, and some just mind-boggling and beautifully peculiar. Every villa has a huge verandah with a view of the rainforest and layers of hills in the distance that don't seem to end. The air is sweet and the breezes are cool even in the afternoons, like an English summer’s day. In the evenings you can lie on the day bed and watch the light change the scenery with different colours and textures – from intense shades of green to a lovely bluish tinge, to a dark velvety green while the sky turns from orange to pink and then to purple. The night sky is crowded with stars – something I had not seen since Mondulkiri, a remote village in Cambodia.

The resort does not preach with pretentious signs declaring that they are “eco-friendly”, but it shows in the three different bins they provide for recyclable materials, organic compost and unusable trash; the dish washing liquid made of natural vegetable extract; the soaps made of natural ingredients; and the design of the villas that maximises ventilation to save energy and not heat up the air with AC condensers blasting hot air out. (Not that you'll need AC anyway, or even fan). Every villa has a herb garden so you can pluck them for your cooking. And the pool is a salt water pool, which is so much healthier than chlorine.

They support local cottage industries by buying local products, meat, poultry, fish and vegetables. Their staff are locals, even though that means forking out more in salaries than for foreigners. This to me, says a lot about the integrity and sense of responsibility of an employer.

If every resort operated this way, we would be able to preserve most of our country’s natural beauty, and some of us can still hold on to a quality of life that is depleting as fast as our rainforests.

Oh, and, our dog loved it too!

Two fantastic nights at the Dusun really weren't enough, at the end of a week's demanding work in KL. But our short stay went a long way to calming me down and planting the thought that I must get back there on my next trip to Malaysia. The Dusun is a wonderful haven of nature and tranquility - but only an hour by taxi from KL's International Airport. My daughter and I relaxed by the infinity pools, cooked our marinated chicken and squid (prepared by the Dusun staff) on the huge wok charcoal barbecue (lit by the Dusun staff ) and listened at night to the sound of the jungle (no management intervention required as the night creatures turn up unaided).
We went on a trek through the jungle, arriving after an hour at a lunch spot with what felt like our own private waterfall and natural swimming pool. I found the hike along jungle paths to be strenuous. Fitter types than me would probably not have broken sweat.
The Dusun is comfortable, but if you're looking for the luxury of a KL five star, it won't be for you. It is authentically close to nature. Our one room bungalow was cooled by a ceiling fan, not A/C. We cooked our BBQ on the porch outside the bungalow, and that meant we got to meet large flying bugs at close quarters. We saw a snake. The Dusun is surrounded by trees and hills and greenery, not by many other buildings. That means it's a bit remote and had we been there longer we would probably have need a car. But for what we wanted it was perfect. And our host Cee was charming and helpful. This place was a great find.

The Dusun is just a super place to enjoy nature, have great food, comfort and privacy.

The amenities of an equipped kitchen was great for those who want to make their stay as comfy as possible. The food provided (breakfast especially) was really tasty and the pool facing the forest reserve was just too good. We had a great time barbecuing, and during the day, there was a nearby pond/lake to do some recreational fishing. The folks/staff were super accommodating to every request, essentially tailoring your stay to whatever you want it to be. The decor was traditional while comfortable and it complements the surroundings beautifully.

The only regret was that we stayed for only 2 nights. The location and the view really gives you a chance to read, relax and reflect. I'd be there in a heartbeat.

We had a delightful stay, including treks in the rain forest, once under torrential rain, relaxing in the pools, introduction to bird watching and nightly BBQ on our private terrace. The owners and the staff were totally attentive to our every demand, which with our three children, were often unusual. A real touch of paradise.

Theodore, Shanghai.

Lovely restored house with grt views bordering a forest reserve. Very comfortable and wonderful quiet escape. Meals were delicious and staff and mgmt. friendly and helpful. Loved the pools. Hiked to the waterfalls and loved being in the bush and away from crowds. Bring coffee and whatever liquor you want to drink and they do not accept credit cards. They can arrange for massages. Well worth visiting and spending time at.
