The memorial is a war cemetery where the remains of many Australian., British, Indian ,some USA and other service people who died in Japanese POW camps and on the Sandakan death march, are buried.
There are a large number of grave markers, of which many have inscriptions like " A soldier of the 1941 - 1945 war, Known Unto God", made it extremely emotional as it means that to this day families do not know what happened to their kin.
Also the number of markers for those that died in the very last months of the war, when it was nearly over, added to the emotion as it was all so pointless.
The whole area is beautifully presented and maintained.
If you go to Labuan, do not miss the experience.
