We took the half day wildlife/photography tour, not because we're serious camera buffs but because we wanted a guided tour of the wildlife of Langkawi. It's all there but you do need to know where to look. These guys were great and Jan our leader had all the academic qualifications for wildlife, conservation and marine biology but was able to explain things in an easy going way.
We were picked up at 8am but were a little puzzled when we stopped after just 10 minutes but sure enough right there in a tree top was the nest of a White Bellied Eagle with a chick being fed. We were provided with binoculars and a spotting scope was set-up which gave such clear and close up views of the birds.
A little further on we arrived at a small jetty deep in the mangroves from where the local wooden fishing boats work. Here the wildlife was numerous including several species of Kingfisher, a Heron, a large unidentified snake on the mudflats, lots of bright red mud crabs and right on cue, an Eagle that swooped down over the water just metres away and plucked out a fish.
Then we were taken up into the thickly wooden mountains and the highest part of the island. Again the guys knew exactly where to stop and set up the spotting scope focused on a hole in a tree, easily visible from the roadside. Within 10 minutes a Hornbill was heard calling and duly arrived to feed young in the nest. But it got better as we drove further and stopped again to witness right in front of us, 4 Hornbills flitting from tree to tree and crossing right over our heads with that distinctive 'woosh woosh' sound of a large bird.
Of course we were lucky to spot all these and so many other birds that day but the trip itself would have been worth it just for the scenery and serenity of the mountains and some great views from the very top. At nearly 5 hours duration its possibly not suited to small children but otherwise is highly recommended.
