“Excellent mangrove tour”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We recently booked our mangrove tour with Dev's Adventure Tours through our hotel. We were collected from our hotel by minibus and joined our tour guide Shudada at the boat jetty. The tour was excellent. Shudada was a fantastic guide - she was hugely knowledgeable about the animals and vegetation of the swamps, telling us so many interesting facts about life in the swamp, how all parts of plants that grow there are used for food, to cure illness etc. The boatman manoeuvred the boat to give us the best chance to spot wildlife. We had a delicious lunch at a floating restaurant, Shudada was great company, and we talked a lot about life in Malaysia and gained a great understanding of history and culture. Altogether a fab day. Would recommend highly.

“Informative and friendly (Mangrove and Jungle Trek/Evening Walk)”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

I joined two tours on separate days with Dev's and got the discount as mentioned on the website. The mangrove boat tour was in the morning and I was picked up on time by the driver. However at the dock, we had to wait for a big group of people that were arriving on their own. After waiting for at least 10 minutes, they still didn't show, so we eventually started the tour with 5 of us plus the guide and the driver.

Incidentally, Shuhada was the guide for both my tours. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the mangrove and made the tour very interactive. She asked lots of questions (including personal ones), and although you may be forced to speak up and answer, all in all it does keep your interest level high throughout the tour.

~~Mangrove Boat Tour (Day 1)
It happened that the day of the tour we were not able to spot any snakes -- not even one, which is extremely rare, according to Shud, although she tried her best to spot some. While our boat did not contribute to the eagle feeding, others boats arrived soon after we entered the eagle area and did feed them, and so as a result, we did get some great sightings (although i do not approve of the feeding). Before the feeding, we could see the eagles perched in the trees, but once the feeding began, like magic so many more appeared and they were so close.

For the lunch there was a choice of chicken, vegetarian or shrimp. I had the shrimp and it was good. There was also a quick tour of the fish farm, and you can pet the mantle rays and hold the horseshoe crab and sea urchin.

~~Jungle Trek/Evening Walk (Day 2)
In the afternoon there was a short rain shower, and so i emailed Dev's Tours to ask about when/if the tour would be cancelled. I received a prompt reply saying how safety is always the first concern, but the rain would not result in a cancelled tour (unless it escalated to something much bigger).

The evening walk was fine, and by that time the rain had stopped. The leaves and rocks during the walk in the jungle were slippery, so extra care had to be taken. I had actually injured my toe earlier in the day but everyone on the tour was very understanding of my slower pace. Again, very informative about the trees and plants in the jungle and the highlight was seeing the flying squirrels. I was actually not too excited about it before, but actually finding them in the trees and seeing them glide from tree to tree was amazing.

Shud also found a gecko hiding in one of the gazebo-y structures, and it was a beauty. Complete darkness except for the spotlight (from the flashlight) on the gecko.

Overall, I am very satisfied with both of the tours, and especially support them as they are eco-friendly. You can tell they love nature and they are very professional and the tours are fun, relaxing and interesting.

The one thing that was kind of awkward was the tipping at the end of the tour. I don't think it's expected, and from both my tours, I only saw one father/daughter pair tip, so i'm not too sure what the general practice is on this. I did end up tipping as well since i could tell how much heart Shud put into guiding the tours and making sure we all enjoyed it as well.

“Fantastic Mangrove Boat Trip!!!”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

Friendly and funny tour guide -Mr. Selva, who won't make you feel boring at all.. During this trip, we visited the mysterious Bat Cave and explored some unique creatures that hidden in the cave... There are many mangrove animals could be found along the river such as viper, big lizard, unique birds and group of eagles flying in the air.. We had lunch in a floating restaurant named "Hole in the Wall" and then visited a fish farm which is really fun and interesting experience for us! The sea water is very clean and suitable for swimming! The tour is just Fantastic!!..and nothing else I can say!!!

“It's just a tour of a resort - Not worth it.”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

We wanted to climb up one of the peaks in the area and were told we should hire a guide. Our hotel highly recommended Dev's adventure tours. The hotels must get a commission for every customer they refer to Dev's. While we were expecting a good hike, this was actually just a low-quality nature tour around a resort. About half the time was spent walking at a comatose pace around the paved paths of a sprawling resort. The guide would make a big deal out of lots of the usual tropical plants that are common on the island, and also make lots of terrible jokes.

The other half of the 'tour' was spent meandering through a wooded path, walking about 50 meters and then stopping for more bad jokes. The tour is well suited for people with extremely limited mobility, as there is no hiking involved, just a slow walk on a straightforward path.

I highly suggest you avoid this at all cost. There is lots to explore on Langkawi, but Dev's is geared towards the elderly, handicapped, or families with toddlers/infants, so there isn't much exploring going on.

Dear djtryptomine,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review about your experience with us.

We are sorry to hear that our trip was not what you were looking for. In our promotion (website and brochure) we emphasize that we are focused on nature and not on distance and/or speed. We will never use the word hiking as this might give the wrong idea about the trip. Most of our guests are joining our trips to learn more about the flora and fauna of our island and do not expect a workout.

It is a condition of doing business through hotel recreation desks and other tour agents that commission is paid, which will not affect the price paid by the customer. With a direct approach of our company, you will have the opportunity to discuss your needs, to ask questions, and to correctly manage your expectations.

Our trips are suitable for people with a normal level of fitness and most of our guests are in the age group between 18 and 45 years old without handicap or limited mobility. We have chosen an easy to moderate jungle trek to make it suitable for many guests and for many of them the heat and humidity can be challenging.

We would be happy to hear from you in which resort you were staying and on which date you were on our trip. We always try to improve our service and quality level; product training to the hotels and agents that are supporting us, is one of the important factors to keep the standards high to avoid a same situation in the future; your mail to anne@langkawi-nature.com would be appreciated.

Kind regards,

“Evening forest walk”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

Last night I did the evening walk with Jerome. We saw the giant and pygmy flying squirrels as well as the flying lemurs. Males and females with babies were spotted.
In addition we saw bats, tokay geckos and macaks.
Jerome's knowledge of the flora and fauna was encyclopaedic. Anecdotal stories of macak monkies misbehaving added to the fun.
The pick up and drop off taxi from my hotel at Temple Tree was prompt and clean.
