The Lanai Hotel is in an attractive well laid out open building and is positioned by a white attractive beach and a calm and friendly sea. The Hotel pool is excellent, but the pool bar does not operate and as their is no attendant it can get rowdy with children chucking balls around and 'bombing'.
The Hotel is mainly frequented by German and Danish guests and with the Germans predominating, if you want a decent spot by the swimming pool or the beach you had better get up before dawn breaks. On the first morning, of my stay I got up early to hear the birds calling. I heard no birds, but I did see the ghostly figures of Germans beach towels in hand, slipping through the Palm trees and commandeering beach chairs and Sun loungers with ruthless efficiency.. Like the dawn chorus it was very quickly over.
Breakfast at the Hotel is in rather a dingy room and is good - not great, but good enough. For dinner, they have a establishment on the beach, that is really an upgraded Hamburger joint. Most people therefore go out for dinner, but I found it perfectly adequate for a snacky type of dinner.
The establishment is well served by a cheerful staff, who are friendly but many of them have a shaky grasp of English, so make sure that your instructions are understood..
The Hotel does not change Travellers Cheques and to change them requires a 20 minute trip to town and can involve one in a major financial transaction. For some reason on presenting cheques a clerk had to be sent across the town to check the serial numbers!!!!. The transaction took 35/40 mintes. Better to change your money on arrival at the Airport.. Taxis are also freely available there..I can recommend an elderly Taxi driver who hangs around the hotel called 'Hussain' A nice man who I used regularly and he did not try to rip me off. His English is rudimentary however..
I can also recommend 'Devs Adventure Tours '- especially a visit to the Mangrove Swamps. We had a brilliant guide, who imparted lots of information and who is self taught.
A trip on the cable car can also be a highlight, but only if you have a head for heights.
Much more could be done by the Hotel for their guests. They could run a regular twice a day service to town for instance and possibly someone to carry ones bags when coming and leaving.
These are minor points. One gets excellent value for money at the Liana and I would certainly stay there again

We stayed there during the Chinese New Year, it was fully booked and we got the last room in the hotel. The room was small, the view from the room wasn't nice at all. Beds had bugs in them, we asked the staff to do something, so they just cnanged the sheets. The toilet made weird sounds, at night too.
The food there was good. There's a cafe right in the beach, the food is nice.
The swimming pool is really nice, the beach is clean.
All in all it was OK

The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful especially Ruslan who works at the front desk. They were able to answer all of m questions and even able to get the superbowl. The word "no" is not in their vocabulary. Highly recommended for the staff.

We were very disapointed to have a room with single beds after specifically requesting and paying for double deluxe, We were told this is the policy, if there is a double available when guests arrive then they can have double otherwise too bad. I would not stay there again .
After three attempts at asking staff for help we eventualy found one reception lady who was approachable and we suggested a double mattress on top of our two single beds. Initially it was not available , eventually she arranged to do this. There were no double rooms available for the entire stay. An email requesting help from LateRooms was not answered. There are no porters.. young girls had to carry heavy suitcases up two or three flights of stairs. On the good side the pool is beautiful the beach is very private and quiet, also clean . Great restaurant across the road and down a bit Cactus , we were able to hire a motor bike very closeby. Shower had good flow but recess had lots of mould. great little fridge. Value for money if you don't mind single beds...and a long walk to the main strip ....

This hotel is run down and awful. The good features are the pool and the beach bar.
Breakfast is a buffet and it's very difficult to find anything nice to eat other than pastries and coffee. There is no lift. The beach is the worst part of the stretch and has jellyfish. It's out of town so you walk for miles to find some 'action' and nice places to eat.
The room we were first put in was a 'deluxe' room. The windows didn't fit so the mosquitoes could get in. The bathroom door fell off so it wouldn't shut and the toilet wouldn't stop filling. When we complained the man said the last people also complained of the same thing. We were put ina new room, this one had a lock to the room that took about 5 mins of jiggling with to get in. The grouting wasn't finished and the bathroom smelt of damp, as did the corridor, and there was black spot mould on teh ceiling where the upstairs toilet and shower was leaking through. The towels were not clean and one was ripped. The pool towels were handed to you with make up stains on them as they had just been dried and not cleaned. It was disgusting. We checked out early and still have not received any money back. Poor customer service. Awful rooms. Don't go there!!!

We stayed here for several nights, looking for an inexpensive, clean place on a quiet beach, yet close to Cenang. With The Lanai, we found all that we were looking for.

Checkin was smooth, though we agree with other reviewers that the front desk staff don't appear to be too friendly. Nobody comes running to take your bags to your room, and without any elevators in the hotel, some travellers might find it a challenge getting their luggage to the 3rd floor rooms. We were a bit surprised that the hotel does not have any non-smoking rooms.

The room we were initially given felt quite stuffy, possibly due to a heavy smoky smell. Since we both have asthma, we ended up asking to change our room. The front desk staff were very helpful and let us look at several available rooms until we found one that was not stuffy. One tip we learned is to run the AC to circulate the air in the room. With our second room, we found it not stuffy at all, had a TV that got the full range of channels (not sure why the one in the other room had issues), and had a shower door that worked correctly. Overall, it seemed like the first room we had was more of a "lemon", but the second one was much nicer. We were also suprised that our second room had a partial (very partial) ocean view, whereas our first room had a view blocked fully blocked by a coconut tree.

Breakfast was good, with lots of hot and cold items. Some of the breakfast staff are quite friendly, though the cooks at the made-to-order station are quite task oriented. The breakfast items had some variety each day, whch is nice if you're staying here for several days.

Location wise, the hotel is located at the far end of Pantai Tengah. Pantai Tengah, overall, is nice and quiet, with impressive views of the nearby islands. The Lanai provides complimentary beach chairs on the beach (be sure to pick up your towels from the pool desk). The Lanai has a beach cafe and bar, both of which we found quite reasonable. Don't miss the daily happy hour where beer is about 3-4 Ringgits.

The Lanai is a 20 min taxi ride from the airport and a 5 min taxi ride from Pantai Cenang. The walk to Pantai Cenang takes about 20 minutes and several restaurants and shops along the way. Within a 5 min walk from The Lanai to Pantai Cenang, we found several nice (and inexpensive) restaurants including serving Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian food in serene settings. Pantai Cenang has lots of restaurants, but none as romantic as the restaurants in Pantai Tengah.

Overall, if you're looking for a nice hotel on a quite beach, consider The Lanai.
