The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa
Ranked #17 of 105 Hotels in Langkawi
Reviewed June 11, 2009

My family of 5 checked in on 6th June and out on 10th June. Booked 2 rooms and the management was thoughtful enough to arrange for rooms with connecting door. Rooms were basic but roomy and cozy.

We stayed for 3 nights (2 adults and a 5 yr old) at Frangipani during the Labor Day weekend. Apart from the raining during our stay, the holiday was very nice and relaxing overall. We booked a Garden View villa. I requested for a detached villa with King size bed but was told that detached villa was all taken. The unit next door was vacant throughout our stay so it was almost like having the whole place to ourselves. Room was spacious, clean, well equipped and nice. A lot of privacy, even though the hotel were quite full. We felt like we were the only ones around. The villa has a little patio with 2 chairs and table. We spent most of our nights sitting there (except when the rain got too heavy) enjoying beer and snacks and nice little chat.
We had a lunch and a dinner at the Mentari Restaurant and the food was really good. Love the Frangipani burger (but you really got to have a huge appetite as the serving was enormous) and the Caesar salad came with ample portion of smoked salmon. My hubby tried their spicy tiger prawn with rice and said it was good. They also have kids menu with good choices. Breakfast buffet was quite good. Adequate choices, with continental and local available.
Service is satisfactory and staff were very friendly and helpful.
The pools are small and simple but clean. Beach is ok but waves were strong due to the rainy weather.
There are plenty of amenities and restaurants outside the hotel, within short walking distance. There were 2 spas nearby. Sunmall has a nice cafe with good food called SunCafe, but it can get very busy during meal times. There are convenience stores within walking distance where you can purchase everything you need. There are seafood restaurants nearby. We tried one called May Hiang, not very honest IMO as we felt we were overcharged and the fish was not fresh. However, Suncafe and L'osteria were good.
We did the mangrove boat cruise with Dev's adventure but due to the weather (drizzling at first and sudden downpour ), we were drenched and only managed to get to see the eagle and some monkeys. The fish farm was quite interesting though. We did not manage to do much due to the wet weather.
We loved Frangipani and would most likely go back there again. It's has just the right ambience for us, totally relaxing and absolutely peaceful. I guess it would be lovely for honeymoon. Hopefully the management would keep it that way.

I went to the Frangipani with my wife and daughter (12) for 12 nights over the Easter period and had one of the most chilled and laid back holidays ever!
The hotel complex is immaculately clean and the beach is cleaned every day. The rooms were of sufficient size, with a fridge,T.V. (15 channels), fan, air-con, complimentary bath robes & slippers, etc....
The staff were very helpful and ensured that we had a pleasant stay.
The only fault with the hotel is the price of drinks at the bar & meals at the restaurant.
We used the empty fridge in our room to put a crate of Tiger beer and coke into, as it was very cheap in the supermarkets. (i.e. can of Tiger in supermarket = 30p, at hotel = £2.)
There are lots of restaurants to choose from, the only problem being which one to choose, as they were all value for money and of exceptional quality.
We went on lots of days out, including the cable car/ oriental village which is a must for the magnificent views & snorkelling at the Marine Park. But, I would advise NOT to go on the Jungle trekking trip as it's a waste of money and while on it we were getting attacked by leaches, on the way back to the hotel I still had a leach on me & it had increased 6 times in size, with all my blood!
I would recommend hiring a car from the AB motel, as it cost £10/day and petrol cost £5 for half a tank!
Would we go again to the Frangipani, of course we would.
P.S. There was no entertainment at the hotel when we went, as it was very peaceful at night , but we ate out every night and that was our entertainment.

The pool and public areas are lovely, as is the layout of bungalows within the garden. My room was a bit musty at first and seemed rather uninspiring for this price. I guess you're paying for the nice pool and great buffet breakfast. Friendly staff, very relaxing atmosphere and a pleasant place to stay, although it seems a little overpriced to me.

We stayed there five nights at the suite which is right on the beach. it is a sprawling room with lots of windows - done up very tastefully. it has a bathroom that is equally huge. the highlight for us was that we had our own sundeck and deck chairs. couldnt have asked for more.

the place was very neat, and most of the people quite friendly. i was very disappointed with the restaurant - for one, they do not serve very good vegetarian fare, and whatever they serve is not great. i also thought the people at the restaurant and the bar werent that friendly.
if you are a breakfast person, you will not be disappointed here. they have an AWESOME variety and also great taste.

they have a pool which we dint use much. a jacuzzi thats very inviting and also clean. the beach is also maintained very well. they have the facilities for all water sports you would like to try your hand at.

I've been to the Frangipani maybe a dozen times over ten years, since it used to be called the Langkawi Village. Since then, in some ways, it has improved a lot and in some others not so much.
Overall, obviously I'm a fan because I've returned so often.
The main plus is the stunning location along the length of the beach, which is cleaned outside the hotel. There is some washed up rubbish further along. You can walk at low tide to the next beach around the headline. Lots of people jog on the beach or swim its length, locals come to swim and fish. The water is usually crystal clear and the view is of some of the smaller islets offshore. Not much sea life due to sand bottom. Gentle slope means safe swimming for kids although no life guard or anything.
Rooms are spacious. Would recommend an upstairs garden room for the fabulous view of the lovely grounds. The gardeners are ace. Amazing variety of flowers and plants, including signs for some that are edible etc. I was once lucky enough to be there in mango season and the staff helped me to pick them straight from the trees all around the grounds. Lanky coconut palms stretch high up to the sky, higher than the hotel (which is only max 2 floors at the back).
Garden bungalows are bigger and have a sofa and semi-outdoor bathroom (shower is outdoor in a mini garden). Their patios face the sea and some have a partial sea view. They are more private than the beach front, but of course the sea front ...have the perfect sea view.
All rooms have sunset view. Avoid the rooms right by reception if you can as they lack privacy.
Wildlife: hornbills visit the gardens. Monitor lizards, plenty of geckos. Minah birds and various smaller species.
Staff are all very friendly, speak some English (and many are fluent). They are generally efficient enough and respond well to requests.
Design is not of the most fancy or trendy standard, although the refurbishment means public areas are quite pleasant with a Malaysian yet modern flavour. Room design is basic though, even in the most expensive rooms. They need to upgrade the bed linen & crockery and things like that if they are going down the "and Spa" marketing route.
But, rooms are well equipped enough and kept very clean. I think someone said no room safe - they do have them in the wardrobe.
Internet is expensive. Go up the road.
Not been in the spa yet.
Restaurant breakfast buffets ON the beachfront are lovely and include a chef doing your eggs. What a view to eat at especially if you can get a front row table. However, it is often very busy and crowded and the staff overworked, resulting in tables uncleared til they can catch up and queues for eggs. Range of food at breakfasts is very good with Asian and European guests catered for. Coffee machine (bean to cup) is excellent & choice of many teas.
Dinner buffets under the stars often very good value with barbecues and seafood, that sort of thing. Some low key combo musical entertainment in the bar by the pool.
Pool service is poor however. One should not have to fetch lounger-cushion pads & towels and carry them maybe 100m or more to the sunbeds. You are even told to return them yourself at the end of the day! This is a hotel, not a youth camp. Often sunbeds run out and their condition is poor. Hopefully they will have replaced them with good quality wooden ones soon.
Overall, would recommend due to very good location on that fab beach and with so many great restaurants in close walking distance. Go to the wine shop in the Sun Mall 5 mins along the road and stock up your fridge with (duty free) drinks. Eat seafood or Malay at Matahari next door by the pond of chirruping frogs with gamalan music tinkling in the background. There is a club just up the road (part of the Sun group) and a Balinese style bar next door that's pretty funky but no one in there any time I've been!

Yes, Frangipani is overpriced and really equates to a good 3* on world wide standards. But many Europeans return for long term visits winter after winter which says it all.

I think you'll enjoy it!

Have seem opposing reports on this place, we go into the liked it category
Without a doubt I think it down to the choice of room. We were fortunnate to be upgraded from a Garden Villa to a one bed suite. We had a view out to the ocean and small pool one side and the garden the other.
Our air con was perfect, quiet and did the job. The bathroom was OK I think maybe time for a freshen up, but no complaints at all on cleanliness either in the room or bathroom. Our bed was large and comfortable – no noise at night so a peaceful sleep. The lounge had a small sofa, a table and a couple of chairs.
The beach in front of the Hotel is wonderful, clean sand clear ocean- there is a warning of jellyfish but that seems to be an island issue. There are two pools one large and one small, and yes the usual Towel competition- but that’s life. I can’t let that spoil my time. Breakfast the usual buffet experience, they try and change dishes each day, but if you were there for a couple of weeks I think it would become very dull- but that problem exists in most placed. Again no bacon, but when in Rome.
The staff were fantastic, very helpful, great English, and competent. The manager we meet Susan was just so helpful and she certainly led the team from the front. Something I really liked about Langkawi is the system for taxi fares. The fares are posted in the Hotel and at Taxi ranks so what you see is what you pay. Ok the island is a very traffic friendly so journey times are predictable- but how refreshing not to be constantly thinking am I going to be ripped off.
In short we went to rest and relax and that is what we did. The Team and Hotel did the job we wanted and took very good care of us. We both left feeling a little sad to leave but certainly refreshed after 6 nights
