Unlike its smaller cousin Gunung Matcincang (cable car mountain), Gunung Raya was occupied by a handful of people. After reading reviews that I must climb the stairs to reach the top (better option than driving) I was bemused as I did not find the stairs until I was at the top of them. Drove the rest of the way to find a hotel on top of the mountain with no access to any vantage point to grab a glimpse of the view to the west. Luckily the car park had ample viewing of sea and islands to the north. great view shame about the access.

A must visit place.. At an island you get to go to a peak and watch out various views of the city from here. Hiring a car/bike is preferable if you wish to visit this place

This is the highest mountain on Langkawi and it's really neat to drive up and up and up into the clouds. At the top, have a cup of tea and admire the view (if you can see it). On your way back down, stop along the road and take photos - it's a lovely view from way up there.

Before going up, read the legend about how this mountain got there. It's really interesting.

Had 3 days in hand but so much to do so I chose night time to check out this place and I absolutely loved it. With the rented car, it was a great long drive to Gunung Raya.
At night it totally turns into a different weather, it gets so cold high up there that one might need a sweater.
Very adventurous, a must try,

You can either drive to the top (the highest point of the island with a hotel and watch tower on top), or walk it. We walked it. The walk is a big staircase with a little more than 4000 steps. The incline varies between 15 and 25 %, so sometimes the steps are spaced further apart and sometimes you are really walking a massive staircase throughout the jungle.
The walk starts behind the waterfalls in Ulu Melaka. We started the walk just after a shower, so it was hot and humid. The first 2000 steps are not a problem. We saw some eagles, monkeys and a flying lemur. The staircase is relatively well maintained and has handgrips at the steeper ends. Unfortunately other guests leave behind plastic containers from drinks and where the stairs had been repaired we also saw lots of angle grinder discs and the old metal railings discarded at the side.
The second part of the walk is steeper, and there were a lot of leeches. I picked 7 leeches from my trousers and socks - leech guards would be a really good idea...The only advantage of the leeches was that they spurred us on: discovering them made me walk a lot quicker.
The whole staircase took us 1 hour 45 minutes - most guides recommend to count on 2 hours.
The last part of the walk you need to go via the road (around 800 meters)
We did not go up the tower because it was too cloudy, but were still very satisfied with our walk.
It is worth arranging the taxi driver for a pick up at the top in advance. We didn't and it took the taxi driver 45 minutes to get to the top.
