This is Langkawi's highest peak. It has nice panoramic views of the island. It has a really impressive two lane road to the top.
Unfortunately, they build a massive mobile phone relay tower right on the top of the mountain, obscuring the views.
They also build D'Coconut Hotel and Viewing Tower, which has to win the award for Langkawi's Worse Mistake Ever Award.
If you're renting a motorbike and want to drive somewhere, take a ride to the top. Bring your own food and water (D'Coconut's restaurant also won our "Worst Food Award"). Spend a few moments eating and wondering how they could have ruined such a nice spot, then make your way back to the beach.

We decided to revisit Gunung Raya again. The drive to the top takes quite a while, but this is Langkawi's highest mountain!
The views on the way are amazing, most of the rainforest is untouched and has some amazing specimens of trees and vegetation, and it gets cooler the higher you get, which is refreshing when the days are hot.
This time we made it to the very top: there is a hotel up there, though personally we would not want to stay there - too many microwave masts spoil the views and may not be too good health wise for an extended stay.
You can go to the top of the viewing tower for 10 ringits each, the first stage is by lift, but you have to climb the final staircase. It was very windy up there and the visibility was poor on the day we went, so we didn't stay long.
The drive down needs to be done in low gear, which is great for seeing the things you missed on the way up! Worth a visit if you like isolation and the views and the natural landscape.

This view from the peak is worth the trip. It's not a short drive and it is a winding road but why go to all the way to Langkawi if you are not going to check the whole place out? We travelled up in a small hire-car and found the road conditions to be pretty acceptable. Yes, it was bumpy in places but considering the wet weather conditions of this tropical island and the constant toll of that on the roads, it was pretty acceptable. Those who complain, expect to find the same conditions as in Australia, UK , Europe and USA, everywhere else in the world. Welcome to the real world folks! And wherever you go, just drive sensibly and don't speed on the roads that you are not familiar with.

Drive to the peak was lovely with such a good road.We were driving in rainy season so caution should be there with slippery road.It look quite deserted with only 2 guys we have seen while going up.You will get to see amazing Rainforest as you reach to the top.

Its a long drive up the hill with a good view up but not worth the drive. We stopped at the DCoconut hotel which seems to be run down and not properly maintain. Would not recommend a visit unless you have plenty of spare time. A good cable car ride would be able to let you have a preview of the entire Langkawi island.
