I was expecting the worst after reading the reviews. But since this is the only RCI resort for exchange in this island, so we took a chance. We had a pleasant surprise and actully enjoyed our one week stay in this resort. On arrival we were given two units to choose from. We chose unit 1303 which overlooks the pool - 2 large double rooms both with en-suite bathroom, a large sitting room and balcony. The furniture are dated and the bathroom needs re-decoration but the unit is very large, clean and comfortable. Air-con works perfectly. Cleaning service everyday.
The resort itself is in a very convenient location, close to supermarkets, money changing bureau, restaurants, duty-free shops and excursion booking offices. So a car is not essential. We hired one but did not use it for a couple of days. Taxis are cheap, but best to negotiate the price before getting in. They don't use the meters although there is one fitted in every taxi. (A big board of most destination's taxi fares is displayed next to reception). Buffet breakfast is cheap (RM22 each) and plenty to choose from with cooked to order eggs and pancakes etc. Obviously, one should expect half of the choices to be Asian dishes, like congee, noodles, rice, curry etc. There are many restaurants around but, as you would expect, mostly are Thai style with spicy food. There is a MacDonald's on main road and a very good Italian restaurant nearby - exit resort turn left and walk for about 5 minutes. The resort does special BBQs and pool side buffets once a week and the food is reasonable. Excursion prices are very good. We booked the 'Mango Tour' for RM50 each which lasted about 5 hours. A lot to see and well worth the money. Staffs don't speak much English but they do try to do their best to please. The island enjoys duty-free status and you can find very cheap goods, alcohol and cigerettes in duty-free shops on main road. Prices are more than double in Penang. Noordin-Mews is a great place to stay in Penang if you need a stop-over.
