Pulau Payar Marine Park Snorkeling Tour from Penang

Pulau payar is about one hour by ferry from kuah. Tour operators offered two types of packages - beach and platform. The beach package is cheaper. We paid rm 90/ pax. The fee includes ferry return ticket, packed lunch that is distributed at pulau payar, life jacket, and snorkeling kit. Fin is not supplied. We were picked up at our hotel by a bus that goes around all hotels picking up those going to pulau payar. The ferry left at about 9 am. On arrival, a smaller boat took to the jetty. Looking down to the sea from the jetty we can see many different species of fishes as the water is crystal clear. The white sandy beach lining this part of the island really is beautiful. Once in the water we don't have to snorkel far to see the fish including several baby sharks. The sea floor however has no colorful corals. We arrived back at our hotel by about 4 pm. We noticed that no garbage is left on the island, all are ferried back to langkawi. There is also no chalet or motel for overnight stay. Pulau payar is for day trippers only. It makes the island remain beautiful. We really enjoyed it - getting close to nature and in the process appreciates the need to respect the environment. It was a day well-spent; we highly recommended others to try.

We booked a day trip to Pulau Payar Marine Park. When we go there we realised there was nothing on the island at all besides one small beach, some toilets (which stank beyond belief) and some tables. We snorkelled a bit and yes, we saw some interesting fish including small sharks, but the coral was mostly damaged/dead and the site itself was hugely over populated with tourists. I am very grateful our tour arrived an hour before the others as that meant we got to snorkel in peace. You can also walk around to the othersise where there is another beach and you can snorkel there too. I highly recommend this as hardly anyone goes on the walk and the fish we saw there were much better!

Take this tour if you have the time to do it, but I wouldn't make it number 1 on this list.

Paid rm80 for the trip from Langkawi Island to Pulau Payar.
Please prepare nausea medicine because the boat are pretty cranky.
Reach the place, clear sea water.
Corals- Disappointing as the corals either dying or not so pretty.. They are all mostly same species too
Fish- Visible fishes that are not scared of human. Baby sharks are there too. Some fish bite. So beware.
Food- Depend on which group you join, i do not know mine from where but the food are really not nice at all, fried rice with 3 soggy fish cracker, 1 salty sausage and 1 very sweet and colored cake.
Bathroom- the changing room is smelly and they dont provide fresh water to wash away the sea water saltiness.. So do not wear expensive swimsuit there, because sea water with swim suit too long will spoil the swimsuit flexibility

Experience wise was pretty ok because the sea water is nice and u can see fishes even without soaking yourself into water

We signed up for an Introductory Dive with East Marine. We have previously done similar on the Barrier Reef and in Bali so thought we knew what to expect.

We picked up from the resort on time and transferred the Royal Yacht Club to join the tour. Upon arrival we were offered a tea or coffee but were given no explanation of what was happening. After over 30 minutes of hanging around a couple of others turned up to join the tour and we set of. The boat is shared with those who are snorkelling and this diving, as it was there was only 8 of us so the boat had plenty of space. The staff running the tour although cheerful did not appear to want to engage much during the trip when some information about the area would have been nice.

After about an hour we arrived at the island. The snorkelers went ashore by transfer boat while we stayed on the boat for the diving instruction. The dive site was literally just of the end of the pier outside of the roped off area for the snorkelers so felt a little cheated. The dive itself was ok with a good variety of fish and plenty of coral although it was very bleached with very little colour.

After the dive we were also dropped off on shore for lunch and snorkelling. As stated the snorkelling was in a roped off area and by the time we arrived a number of other boats had arrived and there were over 200 people snorkelling making it somewhat crowded. Strangely over 90% of the people chose to snorkel wearing their life jackets required for the transfer.

Overall the whole experience was rather disappointing compared to previous experience, while no individual aspect was that poor nothing really had that magical sparkle that you would hope for to make it a memorable event.

I wanted to go snorkeling when I wa sin Langkawi. I asked the staff at hotel lobby and they directed me to one of the tour companies. You need to take a boat or ferry trip from the Kuah port (or Jetty as locals call) to go to this place. This place has a wonderful picturesque view and the water seems good. but it is very crowded with all the people carried by tours. The beach is very small.I didn't try the changing facilities and toilets but checked. It is fair but not the cleanest one. If you want to see the fish you need to cross under the bridge and continue swimming or walk on the deck till you arrive the other beach. there will be less crowded less dirt. If you are traveling as a group, I recommend to arrange your own trip to this place to have more time for snorkeling.Because tours pick you up at 9 am and after all other pick ups and traveling to Kuah Jetty and then traveling to Pulau Payar Marine park it will be around 11-11:30 am. Then they take off very early at 2:30pm and you arrive back hotel not before 5pm.
Unfortunately in Langkawi I was surprised that on every beach including this so called GeoPark beach as well, they have some trash floating. It is an amazing place but need a little bit more cleanup.
