Snorkeling for first timers is a very good experience. It is a whole day event. The world under the water is beautiful! however if ur going there expecting to see corals...then ud be disappointed. The corals are dead. The speed boat ride was an awesome experience! The blue green waters, the white sand is very refreshing n relaxing. Oh it wud be great if u can carry your water friendly cameras to take back some nice pictures.

We are married couple and this is our 1st time snorkeling at Pulau Payar Marine Park.
We booked this trip with Langkawi Coral. Our trip began at Penang Ferry Terminal at 8.30am and reached Reef Platform at 10.30am.
Actually got another group trip reached 15minutes after that but they are departured from Langkawi.
What i can say is woowww and you can smile Once arrived at this island. The water was very clearly.
We was briefed by Langkawi Coral Staf before start the activities. If you come here don't forget to bring your underwater camera because you can see colourful and variety of fish and marine life down there. It was amazing and We has so much fun there.
Buffet lunch was provided by 12pm and it tasted yummy unless their orange and green jelly, it so sweet and tasted fragrant just like eat perfume hahaha..
After had lunch we was took by boat to the beach. Here you can snorkel among the fishes and baby Black Tipped sharks. If you have your own snorkelling gear,
better you bring it because the provided snorkerlling gear by the Langkawi Coral only
can use at the reef paltform area only and u can't bring it to the beach area. This is so fantastic and unforgettable experience. We will come again and maybe with diving package?

We visited Pulau Payer Marine Park as a group of snorkellers and one diver with East Marine.
East Marine are a professionally run diving company. They are smaller than some of the other companies visiting the marine park and on the day we went there were only 2 qualified divers on the boat which meant that each diver had 1 to 1 buddying with a Dive Master.
East Marine provided good quality dive equipment and took care to ensure that divers were happy with fit of fins, BC etc before the boat arrived at the island.
Water temperature was 30 degrees but the rain at the surface at the end of the second dive meant that unlike the Dive Masters who were complaining about the cold rainfall I was glad that I had chosen to wear a 3mm shorty wetsuit.
With a lot of plankton vis was variable from 15 meters to 5 meters all in the same dive. Sea life is very varied with black tip reef sharks, barracuda, jacks, moray eels, many large active groupers along with usual smaller reef life including clown fish and seahorses. There was some extensive soft coral gardens at the start of the first dive but sadly the hard coral is almost wholly dead with piles of rubble on the seabed the only evidence of a former coral reef.
The snorkellers within our group were taken to the beach where there is a covered dining area and toilets. They reported that the snorkelling was good but the location is not comparable with either the Red Sea or Barrier Reef where they have visited before. The real criticism was the number of visitors to the beach from other tour companies. The sea area is roped off for snorkellers which meant that the crowds of visitors were confined to the same small area of sea. Many of these visitors could not swim and therefore stirred up the bottom ruining the experience for others who wanted to snorkel rather than run around in the shallows.
To their credit East Marine do not engage in shark feeding and in fact strongly discourage their guests from participating. However other tour operators do feed the juvenile sharks from the beach. One of the snorkellers in our party reported seeing a fairly mature 1.5 meter shark close to the beach while the feeding was taking place.

I dived 2 sites @ Pulau Payar @ the end of May 2011 with East marine & thought the service was second to none, Our dive master Jake was very good and looked after us from start to finish. There were 2 of us diving in our group with 1 dive master, on both dives we had the whole dive site to ourselves which was awesome. vis was around 15m which was good enough to see the abundance of sea life, barracuda, groupers, sharks etc...
We also did some snorkelling just off the beach in shallow clear water, this was also very good all though it was a little busy with tourists, you still managed to see a lot of fish, they were not at all shy and would come straight up to you especially when you had food!
All in all a good trip was had and i would recommened east marine.

When we asked our hotel to book us with East Marine they booked us on another tour to Pulau Payar. Fortunately when we got to the jetty I called East Marine and they were kind enough to wait for us as the boat was leaving. I cannot praise them enough. It was simply amazing. Because Pulau Payar can get quite crowded at times they took us to another private island next to it. The snorkelling was fantastic - loads of hard/soft corals, all sorts of trigger fishes, sharks, clowns, angels, puffers, moray eels, simply breathtaking and definitely not crowded. We were in a small group of max 15/20 people. I highly recommend them and they were cheaper than the others! Unfortunately the resort didn't give us our 140RM deposit back... If in doubt, call East Marine directly.
