Berjaya Langkawi Resort - Malaysia

Firstly, let me say that we do not usually choose such a large resort to stay in. We would normally choose a smaller, more intimate and usually lower budget accommodation (we tend to feel that larger resorts are rather sterile and soulless) - so it was with some trepidation that I booked the Berjaya. My fears were certainly unfounded!! It is an absolutely beautiful resort with the chalets all set in amongst the rainforest (from memory it covers an area of about 85 hectares?).
As we had chosen this to celebrate a significant birthday we upgraded to an on land Premier Chalet - perfect. Huge bathroom, spotlessly clean. You can sit in the bath and look out to the wonderful view. The bed was massive - bigger than even a King Bed for sure. Day bed. The only problem with a Premier Chalet is that the room is so nice (including 2 chairs and 2 sun lounges on the balcony) that you don't want to leave it to enjoy the other facilities! We did try to peek into other chalets from the road as we walked past & it seems they all have similar layout, just smaller and perhaps a little older and you could see (but not hear) many of these older units were in the process of being upgraded. If my budget was tighter, I would be happy to choose one of the "lower standard" chalets.
Our room was spotlessly clean every day. Our bed was turned down each evening with a different sweet treat each night and that's something very special when you think how big this resort is and how spread out all the chalets are, it must take some doing (keeping the poor staff who do this very fit as there are an awful lot of steps and inclines!)
We had breakfast each morning at the restaurant right on the beach - perfect. Plenty of choice and anyone not happy with the breakfast would be impossible to please. On our second morning, there looked to be a new addition to the breakfast buffet, staff were gathered around an oven baking fresh danishes - yum!!
The pool area is stunning (yes it is having some repair work done to it at the moment but it is good to see that it is being constantly maintained). Look in one direction and you are looking across the beach to the water and look the other way and you are looking up to lush rainforest covered hills. There were ample sun lounges by the pool - but still at a premium as the day went on and a mass of them down on the beach. Great to sit around the pool bar at happy hour in the late afternoon and chat with other guests.
There are free nature walks run by local naturalist Dev (or his able assistant Aida!). Their enthusiasm and passion is infectious. Be sure and do one of these. It is such an insight into what is in the rainforest within the resort, most of us would not have a clue without taking part in one of these walks. We kept our eyes and ears alert from then on, even going on our own little night walk to see what we could find! We also learned how the Berjaya is going to great lengths to maintain the rainforest and become more eco friendly.
The setting of the Ayura Spa is magic. It is surrounded by rainforest which adds to the feeling of relaxation and tranquility. I had a very nice massage here and we happily spent 1/2 day here enjoying the facilities. I also took a morning yoga class here and it was the perfect setting.
The staff were friendly and every one was quick with a smile no matter how busy. The young trainee in the internet room went out of his way to give me assistance.
There are shuttles constantly running back and forth from the lobby to the rooms (which kept me awake on the first night but didn't notice them at all after that). Some rooms really are quite a distance from the lobby, pool etc but I would suggest to walk as much at possible, you get to see so much more that way and surely the natural surroundings are one reason for staying here.
This resort is probably not for someone who wants to be in the thick of things - the only place in very close proximity is the Oriental Village and Cable Car. Although it is easy to get a taxi if you want to get out and about. If you want to have a quiet, relaxing holiday and you are a lover of nature, the Berjaya is the perfect place.

The Berjaya is a magic place- lust on the edge of pure rainforest. You will see flying lemurs, monkeys, giant barracuda, frogs, butterflies, eagles soaring above. The villas are lovely- we had a premier sea view- spacious, peaceful, massive bathroom and shower, lovely balcony with sunbeds. All of the 4 restaurants are excellent- I loved the Thai one out on the jetty the best as you can watch all the fish swimming below. Beautiful people, wonderfully friendly especially to young children (we had our 16 month old with us). The beach is spacious, shallow, warm water (a bit silty so no snorkelling here). Take a nature walk with Dev- he is fab Had a wonderful massage at the spa. Really good value- just can't wait to go back. (no other shops/nightlife nearby if that is what you are looking for- half hour by taxi £5)

We stayed at the Berjaya Langkawi for 5 nights at the beginning of November. For the price we paid, it was perfect. We had one of the basic rooms, on land surrounded by rainforest with a very small view of the ocean which was a nice surprise! The room itself was basic, even a little rundown perhaps but it was all that we needed. The bed was comfortable and while the bathroom may have had a few stains in places it was in no way disgusting or un-useable.

The grounds at this resort are gorgeous. We were a decent walk from the main lobby, and each morning happily spent 5 - 10 minutes wandering down to breakfast. There are shuttle buses to take you everywhere, but we tried to walk where we could as the grounds and the views of the ocean are gorgeous.

The pool area is delightful, as is the beach are too. A stroll on the beach later at night is a great way to top off a perfect day - we found crabs, and hermit crabs and had a ball trying to catch them!

The restaurants at the resort are great. I would recommend the Chinese, the Beach Restaurant and the Thai resturant too. The views are gorgeous at the latter two! You can definitely give the Japanese a miss it's in a terrible location and the service was slow and shocking.

All in all we had a fantastic few days relaxing and doing nothing at all. It was exactly what we needed and it was perfect!

Our room was the best hotel room i've ever stayed in - this is mainly down to the fact we were upgraded and had got a excellent internet rate as we booked early.

The resort is a typical complex build by chain hotels. The service is excellent and the standard of food very good.

The main let down was the quality of the pool and surrounding area. It's age is telling and feels a bit tacky - esp as they allow smoking at the bar in the pool. Small things like the poor quality of beach towels let this hotel down.

The other thing to be aware of is that even though it markets itself as a spa resort the facilities are pretty limited and don't expect hugely plush surroundings.

If it's a beach escape you're after with no hassles this is the place for you. However evening entertainment is limited and given the hotel is quite a way from the main town you are restricted to staying on site.

Most travelers look at the rooms and the value for money. The value of this place is not tangible. Where in Langkawi can you be surrounded by animals roaming freely like the squirrels, monkeys and crabs. The beach is nice with the "protection" from the waves as it is some sort like a cove. The staff is courteous and the two men guitar group was excellent at the "Beach Restaurant" overlooking the sea. Its also walking distance to the cable car. Convenient. It has to be noted that the hotel is a bit old.

As soon as I walked into the lobby, I was expecting great things. We were whisk away to our chalet where my anticipation was short lived. Our room was old, and felt like it had not been throughly cleaned. I went to use the bathroom, and to my surprise, I saw stains on the seat. It appeared that it was stained for good, I was wondering why another seat had not been ordered. The bed was worned out and did not compare to my budget hotel Tune in Penang. The sheets and cover felt dirty, and I ended up with bed bug bites. The big hassle with this resort is that you have to remember to bring everything, or you will have to take the shuttle back to your chalet. Not a problem for adults, but for children, this might be. Although the shuttles are fast and I never had to wait longer then 5 min. The drinks, food, pool, and beach offer endless relaxation. The resort is located near the cable car and Japanese Village. Although a drive from the main town and airport, it is a good location. Overall, nothing special, but check everywhere before paying full price.
