Firstly, let me say that we do not usually choose such a large resort to stay in. We would normally choose a smaller, more intimate and usually lower budget accommodation (we tend to feel that larger resorts are rather sterile and soulless) - so it was with some trepidation that I booked the Berjaya. My fears were certainly unfounded!! It is an absolutely beautiful resort with the chalets all set in amongst the rainforest (from memory it covers an area of about 85 hectares?).
As we had chosen this to celebrate a significant birthday we upgraded to an on land Premier Chalet - perfect. Huge bathroom, spotlessly clean. You can sit in the bath and look out to the wonderful view. The bed was massive - bigger than even a King Bed for sure. Day bed. The only problem with a Premier Chalet is that the room is so nice (including 2 chairs and 2 sun lounges on the balcony) that you don't want to leave it to enjoy the other facilities! We did try to peek into other chalets from the road as we walked past & it seems they all have similar layout, just smaller and perhaps a little older and you could see (but not hear) many of these older units were in the process of being upgraded. If my budget was tighter, I would be happy to choose one of the "lower standard" chalets.
Our room was spotlessly clean every day. Our bed was turned down each evening with a different sweet treat each night and that's something very special when you think how big this resort is and how spread out all the chalets are, it must take some doing (keeping the poor staff who do this very fit as there are an awful lot of steps and inclines!)
We had breakfast each morning at the restaurant right on the beach - perfect. Plenty of choice and anyone not happy with the breakfast would be impossible to please. On our second morning, there looked to be a new addition to the breakfast buffet, staff were gathered around an oven baking fresh danishes - yum!!
The pool area is stunning (yes it is having some repair work done to it at the moment but it is good to see that it is being constantly maintained). Look in one direction and you are looking across the beach to the water and look the other way and you are looking up to lush rainforest covered hills. There were ample sun lounges by the pool - but still at a premium as the day went on and a mass of them down on the beach. Great to sit around the pool bar at happy hour in the late afternoon and chat with other guests.
There are free nature walks run by local naturalist Dev (or his able assistant Aida!). Their enthusiasm and passion is infectious. Be sure and do one of these. It is such an insight into what is in the rainforest within the resort, most of us would not have a clue without taking part in one of these walks. We kept our eyes and ears alert from then on, even going on our own little night walk to see what we could find! We also learned how the Berjaya is going to great lengths to maintain the rainforest and become more eco friendly.
The setting of the Ayura Spa is magic. It is surrounded by rainforest which adds to the feeling of relaxation and tranquility. I had a very nice massage here and we happily spent 1/2 day here enjoying the facilities. I also took a morning yoga class here and it was the perfect setting.
The staff were friendly and every one was quick with a smile no matter how busy. The young trainee in the internet room went out of his way to give me assistance.
There are shuttles constantly running back and forth from the lobby to the rooms (which kept me awake on the first night but didn't notice them at all after that). Some rooms really are quite a distance from the lobby, pool etc but I would suggest to walk as much at possible, you get to see so much more that way and surely the natural surroundings are one reason for staying here.
This resort is probably not for someone who wants to be in the thick of things - the only place in very close proximity is the Oriental Village and Cable Car. Although it is easy to get a taxi if you want to get out and about. If you want to have a quiet, relaxing holiday and you are a lover of nature, the Berjaya is the perfect place.
