“beautiful, friendly, relaxed piece of paradise”
Reviewed October 24, 2009

We have just returned from 5 relaxing days at a little slice of paradise called the Berjaya Langkawi Resort and feel like we have left behind a good friend. If you are after the slick 5 star experience with everything “laid on” just a short stroll from your hotel room don’t choose the Berjaya. Berjaya’s charm lies in its breathtaking natural beauty and it’s friendly, relaxed, laidback ambience.
It is a big resort with individual chalets nestled amongst acres of beautiful tropical rainforest gardens. So you need to be prepared to either do the 10 minute walk through the beautiful grounds (not a hardship really!) or if it’s too hot to walk, you need to be prepared to wait for a pickup from your chalet (we never waited more than 5 minutes – not a big problem at all)
The beach is beautiful – lots of deck chairs under large umbrellas, beach volleyball and soccer if you want it – but most people, including us, seemed to be happy with swimming in the warm waters and then relaxing on the deck chairs and enjoying the amazing views.
The pool is also very good – again lots of shady spots if you want them – plus snacks and drinks available from friendly staff and ½ price cocktails in the early evening with a local band to serenade you.
We chose a Premier Land Chalet as we were looking for a bit of extra comfort and we were not disappointed. The room was beautifully appointed and the views magical. We loved to lie on the deckchairs on our veranda in the early evening and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves, watching the sky slowly turn to soft amber while we decided which restaurant to try. There are 4 choices which was enough for us and there is entertainment in the Lobby Lounge later in the evening (the staff in the Lobby Lounge were so friendly and seemed genuinely interested in where we were from - we miss them!) Again, this is all very laid back – if you are after action, loud music and dancing into the wee hours this is not the hotel for you.
We enjoyed some pampering at the Spa which is good value as you are able to make use of all of their facilities even if you are just booked in for a manicure (although perhaps this may not be the case when the Spa is very busy during high season). The large pool size Jacuzzi is a real treat, and there is a sauna and steam room.
We also enjoyed Dev’s evening nature walk. He takes you right up through the twisting paths to the very back of the resort and to the edges of the jungle. Dev is very informative and passionate about preserving the ecology of the resort and Langkawi as a whole. As the night closes in and the evening breezes start to stir you have a lovely view back down to the water and get a real appreciation of just how large and incredibly beautiful the resort is.
We were sad to leave at the end of our 5 days and are hoping to return one day soon. The Berjaya is not a glitzy 5 star resort. It is a beautiful, friendly, relaxed piece of paradise and we give it 5 large hearts.

we stayed at this hotel for 14 days, it is fantastic the staff are friendly the shuttle service is easy just dial 4 no problem. we prefered walking to and from our room (1280) as to see all the wild life which was not boring at all , thats one of the reasons we chose this hotel . the manager threw a cocktail party which we were invited to all drinks and nibbles encluded plus they had a raffle which my husband won free jet skiing. there is plenty to do here the pool is good you can access it without going through the lobby. also there is a nice bar just along the beach called the seashell bar, say you know mr dave and you might get a free beer. ps you must do one of dev's nature walks.

Had 4 days at this resort ..... even though Langkawi is very pretty, this property is situated in virgin forest...it's a bit boring! It is so vast and as situated on a hillside, walking to/from your room is near impossible. The resort provides a cart service to pick you up/drop you off, but really it is a bit of a pain to have to ring every time you want to leave your room! Plus, don't like a place where you have to walk through the lobby to get to the pool/beach! Once you have seen the monkeys that reside within the resort and remember the fact that you cannot walk anywhere with a plastic bag, without it being swiped off you by these pests... this place wears thin! Not enough to do ... cable car attraction near the resort was closed for maintenance! Shopping? Forget it! Only handicraft stuff!

We had an amazing stay at this wonderful hotel - we enjoyed our time in a Premier Chalet on land - the location and views were amazing - we got the sunrise and the sunset. The room was fantastic, from the huge bed to the spacious bathroom - robes, slippers and lovely toiletries - nightly treats - even a happy honeymoon cake! Having been married for nearly 29 years this was a lovely belated thought!

The staff were so kind, always smiling and ready to assist in any way they could. The housekeeping service was really efficient and our maid was really lovely. Thanks Jenny.
The Phan Thai restaurant was really delightful the food and staff excellent.
We had room service on the balcony on a couple of nights so we could soak in the atmosphere that was all around us – very memorable – food excellent and delivery in very quick time.

The wildlife – what can you say – take advantage of the morning and evening nature walks – you’ll then be able to truly appreciate all that creatures of the day and night.

We can’t wait to return – thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this unique hotel.

Congratulations to all the staff

The hotel is very big and practically al the information we got from the reception were wrong. We asked about closing time for pool, fitness and shuttle to oriental village and got wrong answers to all questions. The standart room are old and run down. The room are very far from the mainbuilding and there are no changing rooms by the pool. We had to use the toilets by the pool to change clothes - and they smelled very bad and were all wet.. The restaurants were good and there are lots of charming monkeys. And the fitness center is great.

We came from Rebak Island Resort - it was much better

When I first arrived at the Berjaya Resort with my family i.e. husband and 3 kids, 13, 6 and 3, I was a little emotional after a long eventful flight and when we caught the shuttle bus to our rainforest (garden view) chalet (which was nothing like anything I had ever stayed in before) I felt like I had done the wrong thing by following the reviews on trip advisor about how great this resort was and booking it! However.....when I got up the next morning after a great sleep in the ENORMOUS bed and stepped out on to the balcony to be greeting by the gorgeous black monkeys swinging through the trees, we even had a family with a baby RIGHT AT OUR BALCONY!! I started to soften and warm to the place we would call home for a week and by the end of that week, I was so sad to leave our gorgeous rainforest chalet were we had had a great experience.
At first I thought the walk to the pool was too far ( I have always stayed in hotels with the pool at my door!) however, we loved that walk to the sumptuous breakfast each morning. I had so many peaceful moments on the balcony, surrounded by the forest, it didn't matter that we didn't have a sea view, it felt like we were in our own little part of the forest. The rooms were comfortable, we had connecting rooms (2 chalets joined) and it felt special to be in the traditional Malay style accomodation, rather than the run of the mill hotel room. I did open the doors sometimes, but be warned, the brown monkeys will try to get in and do know how to push the balcony doors open, so make sure they are locked!!
The pool area was gorgeous, the hours of the pool bar were too short for us, but it was a great family hotel with the seperate kiddies pool and spa pool.
We only ate once at the hotel at the Beach Restaurant, which was lovely but more for couples as our kids got several "looks" from the couples trying to have nice quiet romantic dinners!! There are plenty of dining options close by at the Oriental Village (within walking distance, although the hotel does run a shuttle there) and Telaga Harbour, which had a fantastic array of very nice restaurants, we felt like we were in Monaco! However our favourite ( and the cheapest by far) was Burau Corner, just around the corner form the Mutiara Resort (south of Berjaya). The Mutiara had a great beachfront bar and restaurant with live music, which you can reach by walking along the beach, but beware of the tide coming in as it creates a channel that you have to swim across to get back!! Apparently the resort will send a shuttle for you if you get stuck, but taxis are cheap enough. Our friends hired scooters which were very cheap and one day we hired a car. Driving is very easy and the roads are quiet, but there is not an awful lot to see, just stay at your hotel and enjoy it!!
The things I would recommend to do is the free Eco-walk at the hotel with Dev, what an amazing man, a wealth of informaion and doing so much to help conserve the nature of the island of Langkawi. The cable car was great, but try to go on a clear day, apparently you can see Thailand! We did do the Mangrove tour, but it wasn't great.
We were disappointed in the shopping, as we normally go to Bali and expected the same, but it is not. I would not recommend Langkawi as a shopping destination. As a beautiful place to relax and enjoy nature, the beach, beautiful tropical weather and swimming, and to get away from the maddening crowd for some peace and quiet, yes!
