“Berjaya Resort”
Reviewed January 21, 2009

We spent 10 days in Langkawi in December 08, and wished it was longer!
We were a little cautious as to how we would like this hotel and did not have high expectations, but we really liked it!
Our 'hut' was small but adequate, the transport was there at a call on the phone, to take us to the central hotel, in fact they were very good in ensuring that we had prompt service and tried their utmost to help as I have some mobility difficulties. After eating at the various restaurants there was always an electric buggy called to the restaurant itself to return us to our room.
It was a little crowded over Christmas, but it was possible to avoid the crowds and large numbers of children and to escape to the beach, where there were good sunbeds, towels and shade and a lot of peace! Waiters came along to bring drinks etc at regular intervals and all the staff were very friendly and helpful.
We ate in most of the restaurants and found them all good, with a variety of items on the menus, but the Oriental Pearl, (Chinese restaurant) was oustanding in it's food, service and friendliness, and it was very pleasant to eat on the terrace outside, (the inside area was cold - air con too effective!)
Breakfasts were good, but it does pay to go early when there are a lot of guests around. We were pleasantly suprised to see all of the area managers around and talking to the guests, this a rare thing in our experience, and everyone was approachable and friendly and couldn't do enough to make us welcome.
The cablecar to the summit of the highest point on the island is very close and the hotel run a complimentary shuttle bus to it. You need to check that it is running before you leave and the hotel will do this for you and you can pay before you leave. If you don't go early or later in the day, the queues to exchange your ticket voucher and then to queue for the cable car can be a couple of hours on busy days, but it worth the wait to see the views from the top.
The area is set in an 'Oriental Village' which has very competitive prices for food, drinks, cigarettes, clothes etc and is much cheaper than the hotel.
Overall, we thought the services provided by the hotel were good, from getting taxis for you to fixing problems.
Our room was good but the bathroom could be improved by redecorating and updating it a bit, but it all worked!
We would probably try to avoid the high season if we return, but it was a good experience which we hope to repeat, especially if you like peace and enjoy watching the wildlife!

This place is over-priced for its inflated rating. We stayed in the jungle bungalow, which upon arrival had a dirty bath with hair on the tap and the used bath gel still on the bath. We had no hand towels and also no bath mat. The room itself was okay although quite a hike up the hill unless you take the shuttle from reception. the room could be brighter and lighter. The one light source from the tree side means that not much light gets into the room.

The buffet breakfast was fine. There was continental, European and Indonesian choices.

The location of the hotel will prove difficult for some. We hired a car and felt it was essential to see the island. The local oriental village is over-priced and not very authentic. I wouldn't eat there. The cafe by the water at the nearest hotel seems to have better food but again is priced too high b/c of its location to the resorts. The better food can be found in the nearest town on the way to Cenang, or in Cenang itself. There is a nightmarket at village close by and the locals attend the market and sell yummy dougnuts and other foods. We never ate at the hotel except for breakfast.

The staff were not very friendly. There was no effort to be more than business-like in all dealings. Some of the drivers of the shuttle managed a smile towards the end of the trip but the place had an uptight and not very warm feel to it.

I would stay elsewhere or do as we did and hire a car to get yourself around. The overall hotel is not what it should be in terms of its current rating and service.

Having read so many good reviews for Berjaya I was looking forward to visiting. Sadly my expectations were not met. First the good points:

1. Food (except breakfast) was very good, especially the beach & Thai restaurants.
2. Service/Staff were very good. Polite & efficient.
3. Prices were cheaper than I was fearing. Granted they are more expensive than if you go out the complex, but all things considered they were acceptable.

Now the not so good...

1. We booked a "deluxe" chalet. Awful, truly awful. Horrible tatty bathroom, living/sleeping area in dire need of decoration, no safe and a nasty bed that had a mattress so old it was getting out of shape. I asked to upgrade or change room and the girl on check-in said "no, your room isn't a very nice one is it". That said it all.

2. Entertainment was laugh-aloud funny, except they were singers and not a comedy routine. So out of tune, and so seemingly oblivious to the meaning of the words they were trying to sing that it would have been easier to put a CD on. Simon Cowell would have loved it.

3. Breakfast is a scrum. Take sharp elbows and be prepared to battle. Yes, it is mass catering, but compared to the other meals we had this was a big let down. You have to queue to get in, battle with others guests and then take what's on offer. Not a 4* experience. Not even close.

Overall, very dispappointing. I read a previous reviewer say he's been to the Berjaya seven times. Wow. I can only assume he hasn't been in room 7109.

We arrived at the Berjaya on NYE 08/09 and had a very disappointing experience.

On a positive note - the majority of the staff were lovely and helpful and of course the island and weather was beautiful... however....

To be perfectly frank, the resort is like a slightly upmarket and overpriced Butlins which is great for families but not ideal for a couples.

The resort catering was over-priced and of poor quality - we both got ill eating there in two of the restaurants which is very unusual for us. The only restaurant with good food was the beach one but one out of 5 isn't a great ratio. In addition, the service at the Japanese one in particular was beyond a joke. Drinks were also double the cost of anywhere else on the island (save the Datai!)

The 'entertainment' was appalling. You couldn't enjoy a meal without a local band caterwauling a series of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey hits. I don't know what we paid for the obligatory NY Gala but we left after 30 minutes to go to Cenang as it was unbearable.

Finally, the fact the resort was in the middle of nowhere also meant we had to spend a fair amount on taxis to get about the island.

The rooms themselves were fine and very chilled, but you could only get to your bungalow by way of their internal mini buses which would arrive anything between 5 and 30 minutes after ordering... leaving you quite stranded on occasion!

It's fine if you're a family. Great pool for the kids but far to 'resorty' for our liking. We would recommend finding somewhere in Cenang if you're looking for something to do in the evenings and cheaper/better food.

  • Liked — The bungalows were comfortable and clean
  • Disliked — The incessant entertainment and rubbish/expensive food

WORST HOTEL EVER!!!! NEVER EVER BOOK HERE. HORRIBLE!!!

Our ordeal - We booked 3 rooms from Dec 31/08 to Jan 5/09. We thought it would be a perfect way for 5 friends to relax and ring in the new year season. 2 rooms were prepped first. When our friends were shuttled down to their rooms they were greeted with bugs, dirt, stained toilet & walls, cracked floors, missing tiles, dust bunnies (actually it was a fur ball the size of a large baseball) emerging from the bed, tattered slippers & sheets and reused garment bags to name a few. These rooms were classified as their Superior Room. We paid approx. 900 malaysian ringgits per room per night to stay in what they called 5-star but didn't equate to as little as 1-star. It was horrible. When our friends returned to reception with photos in hand to show the disarray of their unkempt rooms we were met with the worst costumer service I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. We were basically shunned and told if we didn't want the rooms that was fine but they were fully booked for New Years up until Jan 3 so no chance in the possibility of an upgrade to the better room. "Upgrade"??!?!? I'm sorry but our booking was not for their lowest class accomodation to begin with. We paid the price for the better room, should a consumer not get what they paid for based on what was advertised to them? The third room was finally ready. Classified as their Premier Room. Weary of what we'd get we were shuttled to our "water" chalet (which was techically their second row of chalets so we weren't even in the water). What to do now... 1 good room, 2 bad ones when we paid about the same for all. We asked to cancel the two bad rooms since they were not in liveable conditions. To add insult to injury they said OK but would be charging for the first nights stay for both dispite the fact that noone was staying in the rooms. It was New Years Eve and we had just flown onto Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur. All other 5 star hotels on the island were fully booked. Management was most unhelpful. We finally decided that based on timing and our predicament we would stay 5 people to the one "good" Premier room to at least ring in New Years together. We would decide the next morning if we should try to continue the stay or admit defeat paying for addtional flights back to the mainland. When asked if we could at least get complimentary breakfast to eat together we were basically told NO and they would be quite happy for us to cancel the 3 rooms for 5 nights than give us any compensation. Trust me I asked point blank if they'd rather have us cancel the whole booking than arrange for breakfast (whose buffet wasn't even very good to be honest) - they said YES. We were told breakfast could be charged to our room for 55 ringgits per person per day. New years day we finally decided to stay and make the most of it. 5 people shared one room for 2 nights, the 3rd night 3 of our friends stayed at an alternater resort and the 4th & 5th nights finally reunited at Berjaya for 3 Premier chalets we originally were supposed to get as we booked and paid for them. Just trying to cancel the 2 disgusting Superior rooms that we didn't use for 3 nights was an ordeal in itself. No one wanted to talk to us, management was always conviently in a meeting or not on shift when we asked for someone. This lasted everyday up till our final day there (Jan 5). The only reason we finally got it sorted out was through the internet booking company we made the reservation through; Wotif.com. The people with Wotif were friendly, understanding and compansionate to our predicament. If we had booked directly I can assure you the money would still be out of our pockets and in Berjaya's for the returned unused rooms. Very unprofessional in every way. On our final day of checkout and in the midst of settling the bill we noticed we weren't the only ones. A group behind us was returning 5 room keys complaining of the dirty 'jungle' superior rooms they received and another group behind them with 2 more keys. This is not an isolated incident. And the same as our case... I'm sorry the hotel is fully booked there is nothing we can do. And Management in all this? In meetings or not on shift. We got the names of two upper staff (Brian and Naomi). They both avoided us like the plague. And neither were present when we finally had it settled.

They kept telling us they were a 5 star resort. I think not. NEVER BOOK here is my recommendation for you! If I can help one person and steer them away from this property I'll fell a little better about what we went through. Please don't book here! When we dined at a local restaurant and told them where we were staying even the server cringed and said Berjaya would only be 3-star at best... and even that would be an overstatement!

  • Liked — The best was our friends making it work. But that's saying nothing about the property itself.
  • Disliked — The customer service. If you can even call it service - we didn't get any.

We were at the Berjaya from the 19th-30th December 2008. A wait at reception and then a mix up with rooms but were shown to a very nice, clean room on the third level with a sea view. The hut on stilts was set in the rainforest with lovely views out to sea. The wildlife is amazing, Flying Lemurs, Flying Squirrels, Langurs, Macaques and birds including Sea Eagles and Hornbills.

The huts are very spread out and you are transported by a very efficient system of little buses. Dial 4 and one is there in minutes, alternatively you can walk but I was too lazy. The reception and lounge is spacious and all members of staff were polite, efficient and very friendly. Absolutely lovely, nothing was too much trouble.

We ate in all the restaurants and found them all good. We had the gala dinner in the Thai restaurant on Christmas Eve, a lovely setting for a special meal. Our only complaint was the food in the Chinese was so good, but the portions were so huge it looked like we hadn't eaten anything when over full!

The swimming pools are nicely arranged so there are quieter areas for sunbathing away from the children's pool. The beach is lovely with clean sand and sea. The sea is shallow and warm.

We can both say we had one of the best holidays ever at the Berjaya. Yes, it is a little tired round the edges, if you want perfection go to the Dattai. But for a fantastic, relaxed holiday in a beautiful setting at a reasonable price it can't be beaten.

My boyfriend and I were in Langkawi for 5 days over New Year's and booked a Premiere Chalet through Expedia. Check-in took more than two hours and we weren't offered an option (to change in a lobby restroom and use the pool, etc.) other than to please sit and wait in the lobby.

Once we we got to our chalet, we were pleased with it's size and the large balcony with a view over the ocean. The bathroom was quite large and the room was clean and surprisingly bug-free considering the nearby forest and wildlife. Ameneties (cotton buds, robes, etc.) were inconsistent from day to day, but were overall fine.

We enjoyed relaxing both by the pool and on the beach, and didn't have much trouble finding lounge chairs on most days. The resort guests during our stay included a lot of families with small children, which I didn't really expect given that the resort doesn't seem to have any sort of kid's club. This wasn't a big deal for us, but be warned if you're looking for quiet and relaxation that the pool area was definitely "lively".

Staff were generally friendly and helpful - we enjoyed chatting with our waitress at the Thai restaurant, who remembered what we had ordered before and were planning to do the next day on our second visit. However, a few times we felt frustrated by incorrect information we were given by people at the concierge desk (in one case, saying there was a 2-3 hr wait for the cable car and when we tried anyway we were able to walk right on, and in another, saying alcohol was not available for purchase at Oriental Village, advising we instead walk - not take a taxi - 30 + minutes to the harbor "close" by). I don't think someone would give misinformation maliciously, so the Berjaya should just be sure that the people made available to answer guests' questions are well informed to do so.

Our big disappointment at the Berjaya was the food - neither of us are fussy eaters, we both enjoy sampling the cuisine of wherever we travel, so we have never before been this displeased with the dining options at a resort. Overall, we found the food to be very bland, and in many cases, lacking in either quantity (a chicken sandwich came with virtually no fillings) or quality (a chips and salsa appetizer which was really stale Doritos and warm pasta sauce). It really felt like all the food (buffet and ala carte) was prepared en-masse and was not above high school cafeteria quality.

A complete exception to the above comment is the thai restaurant, which was actually pretty good. Reservations are absolutely necessary, as it's quite small and only held about 40 people or so.

We also both had massages at Ayura spa. The spa was nice enough (steam room, sauna, and outdoor mixed-gender jacuzzi), but wasn't anything particularly special.

Overall, I wouldn't strongly discourage others from visiting as long as you know what to expect. If you go with your own plan of outings you want to take (rather than relying on the concierge's advice), they can help you book the taxis, and ideally you can arrange to eat elsewhere. We had an excellent dinner at La Luna @ Casa del Mar in Pantai Cenang ( we planned our outing around being there at dinnertime)
