Langkawi Night Market
Ranked #24 of 103 things to do in Langkawi
Attraction details
Reviewed January 17, 2014

I understand that there are several night markets in Langkawi island. On Wed and Sat evenings (late afternoon rather), the night market is located just outside the Baron Hotel in Kuah town. The hotel building is painted like the Malaysian flag which is hard to miss.

Apart from clothes, you will find lots of local food, drinks and desserts. Very affordable. More variety than you can savour and it makes a fantastic place for photography. Lots of people and lots of colors. Try to go early, around 6pm, to ensure good light for photographs and to avoid the massive crowds later.

If you like real Malaysian food you will love the Night Markets. We went to 2 night markets during our 5 day stay and wished we had gone to all of them. They're on almost every night and move around the Island. The people are warm, friendly and always very happy to see tourists at the markets trying out new dishes. Each dish costs anywhere between RM0.50 to around RM4.00. Amazing food and wonderful atmosphere, plus it also helps out the local community.
An absolute must for Langkawi.

Every Wed and Sat, Kuah town will have their annual pasar malam. I will usually arrange my trip to langkawi to collide with one of the nights. If you're into food, Langkawi Pasar Malam is a must go place as it carries a variety of local delicacies from ayam bakar, jagung bakar to laksa, bakso etc. My personal favourite is the local tapai, a type of desert made from fermented rice. Awesomely good and beyond comparable. Best of all, everything is so cheap!! A must go place if you're in town.

We've been to 2 night market locations- the very small market at Chenang on Tues and the larger version at Kuah on Sat. I would recommend going if you fancied some good value 'take away' street stall Malay food. Fresh, delicious and ridiculously cheap (same price for locals and tourists!) Other than that, there isn't much to see, in Kuah it was a single aisle with stalls either side. If you've been to any markets in SE Asia you may find this boring as it isn't geared to tourists but you could buy some cheap copy sun glasses or maybe a sarong. But there isn't a lot of choice so it's probably not worth going for that reason. If it's your first visit to SE Asia you may find it interesting, either way, go for the food or a stroll.

We stumbled upon the night market on the way back from the craft village. The market takes place 5 nights a week and moves around to different locations on the island (marked on maps you can pick up at the airport). The market is made up of fruit and veg stalls, clothes and some amazing local foods. The Langkawi style Spanish omelette is worth a try! lots of fun and a very cheap dinner for the family!
