“Good but expensive”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Had really nice choices, but the portions were small and expensive, would have preferred bigger ones. It's small but cozy, the service needs to be a bit more friendly!

“Nice ambience, excellent customer relationship, food appealing to most Western palates!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

We had dinner at this establishment on 21st January 2013 following the recommendations of a waiter at the Danna Hotel across the road.

This establishment was awarded Trip Advisor’s Award For Excellence in 2011, evidence of which was prominently displayed at the base of the staircase leading to the restaurant and on the general menu posted on the wall.

The restaurant is smallish, having about 14 small square tables for two, with a bar with more seats. The tables could of course be joined to accommodate more than two diners when necessary. On top of the fabric table cloth, is placed a white paper mat with the WiFi pass word imprinted where the plate would be placed. Wine is kept in a proper wine cooler and not on the shelves, and there is indeed a comprehensive wine list. Salt and pepper are grinders are on each table, not just shakers! When seated, cold wet towels are offered. The decor is modern, and the views through the second floor of the building was of the Marina beyond with the yellow and green lights reflected over the still waters of the sea waters.

We ordered the Rendang and the Fish Curry. We were asked if we wanted the food we chose to be ‘more spicy’ or less. After a 20 to 25 minute wait, the Australian Beef Rendang came with Jasmine rice, Kuah Lodeh and peanut sauce. The Malay Fish Curry containing Red Snapper fillets ( you could opt for Mackerel ) in Lady Fingers and Sweet Beans was served with Yellow rice ( Nasi Kunyit ) and Sambal Water Spinach, or Sambal Kang Kong.

We found the food a tad bland to our palates, being more accustomed to cooking prepared in Singapore and Padang, and although we would give the plating and presentation high marks, these dishes fell short of our expectations. Having said this, we noted that out of nine tables occupied that evening, seven were filled with Caucasian tourists.

After dinner we had a brief word with the proprietor, Peter, who explained to us the concept of his food preparation. This has mainly to do with catering for the Caucasian palate hence the food is devoid of spicy condiments like prawn paste ( Sambal Blechan) and for health reasons, served with less salt. In the light of this, we can understand the raving reviews and reports from some members of Trip Advisor, vis a vis the adverse reports from some locals who have tougher palates or those accustomed to a more spicy cuisine.

The service is impeccable, in spite of having a small number of waiters, all friendly, obliging, knowledgeable of the food served in the menu. Peter himself goes around the tables to chat up with the diners and inquire if the food was alright. Customer relations is obviously top on the list of Peter’s priorities, and isn’t this right for any business? The restaurant setting and ambiance adds value to his niche of customers, and it’s worth a visit to experience something ‘different’ in Malaysian Langkawi.

“Great food!”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

We came to this restaurant after reading good reviews on TA. We went on Friday afternoon, that probably explains why we were the only patrons there. Had to wait another half hour for them to open the restaurant even though we were there at 12pm. Knowing that it is considered a 'fine dining' restaurant, we did expect to pay prices a little on the high side. The lunch menu is the same as the dinner menu. I had the duck while my partner had the ayam percik. Both dishes were really good and the portions were sizeable. Definitely worth the money you are paying for. As for the ambience, I think it's a great place for dining with a lovely setting and harbour view.

“Refined, Contemporary Malay Cuisine”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

After hearing a lot about this restaurant located at Telaga Harbour, brought my guests there in mid December 2012 for dinner.

Walked into the restaurant and reserved a table for 5pax as we wanted to take a walk around Telaga Harbour and have coffee at The Loaf first. It was a good thing we made reservations as the restaurant was full by about 8pm. All though the restaurant is located on the first floor and not really noticeable its reputation has made guests look for it.

There was a corkage charge of RM30 per bottle as my guests brought a bottle of Glenfiddich, however the corkage was waived.

We ordered combination starters from Indian Platter w. Samosa, Mushroom Salad & Mozzarella Cheese Pakoras which was typically Indian, samosas were deep-fried perfectly. The Mushroom Salad was good with a slightly sour dressing. Local Tenggiri Fish Otak-Otak w. Tamarind Tomato Salsa was a little bland for my taste as I'm used to more spicy styles. Malay Platter w. Satay, Tofu Sumbat & Pegaga Salad. The Pegaga Salad was unusual and tasty.

The main course was also a combination that was ordered to offer variety for my guests.
The Malay Fish Curry with Red Snapper, Lady Finger, Sweet Beans Served w. Nasi Kunyit & Sambal Water Spinach was very flavourful & tasted good; even though we requested it to be toned down as some of my guests could not take too spicy.

Medium Spicy Australian Beef Rendang Served w. Jasmine Rice, “Kuah Lodeh” & Peanut Sauce - the beef was braised to perfection as it was very tender and the combination of accompaniments matched well.

Roasted 5 Spice Duck Breast Served w. Fried White Radish Cake & Garlic Bok Choy - I enjoyed this dish and I do not normally take duck. It was well roasted with crispy skin & tender, juicy meat.

We were too full and only tried the Smoked Banana ice cream which was unusually tasty

The service was attentive & fast even though they were full. After having the main course we added on two more of the same main course and the owner Peter was kind enough to ensure that they were served to us first even though there were other orders. This made a huge difference as if we had had to wait a long time for it we would not have enjoyed the dinner as much.

Peter was attentive and came over to inquire on how was the overall meal. Overall great meal, good service & cozy ambiance. Privilege Restaurant & Bar truly deserves their reputation for refined, contemporary Malay cuisine with good service.

“Nice place to enjoy”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

We went there for dinner and we recomment that your reserve a table in advance because although it was even day the restaurant was full. Food was nice but we had to wait 40mns to get it. The manager spoke a little French so it was funny and we loved the smoked banana ice cream which was really original. The lemongrass soup as a starter is also nice. The atmosphere is romantic and agreable. We paid 210RM for two with one starter and one dessert.
