“A disappointment...”
Reviewed August 8, 2010

This place is a pretty collection of cottages (for want of a better word) situated away from the beach in a nice, quiet location. As others have noted, the owners are very friendly. However, I think they would admit themselves that socialising, for them, comes before customer service.

From the outset we didn't really feel comfortable using the facilities as the swimming pool and outdoor bar area were frequently occupied by the owners, their family and friends - especially in the evenings. There seemed absolutely no division between their business and social life. Lovely as they all were, it wasn't what we wanted or expected. Furthermore when our shower broke down (in 30/35 degree heat) it took 3 days to fix it. Not because it was difficult to fix, but because they couldn't find the time to pop in (they found the time to have dinner with friends twice in that time though and entertain visiting family...) When Andre did come, it took him 1 minute to fix it. During that time, we were able to use a shower up at their house, but it wasn't practical or private.

We were also a bit annoyed at the fact we had to pay to use the air-conditioning. We met other people on the island who were paying £5 for air-conditioned rooms. We also didn't like that they charged for toilet paper. Having travelled round asia we were accustomed with the "don't put paper down the toilet" policy but this was the first place we'd been to they charged for toilet paper. We got the impression they were trying to squeeze every last penny out of us. This was evidenced also by the fact they charged "per item" for laundry - a practice we've only experienced in 5 star hotels. (Instead we took it into town and got our clothes laundry at a fraction of the cost). They also charged an "administration fee" for making our reservation - again, something we have experienced nowhere else. Although the cottage was nice, some of the fixtures and fittings were not working, and the bed was uncomfortable. Additionally, during the whole week, our cottage was not serviced once (e.g. bins not emptied) and we were offered no change of sheets (which in that heat would have been very welcome).

Furthermore, if you don't like dogs I wouldn't come here. The owners' two dogs are enthusiastic types and are not given any boundaries where guests are concerned. This wasn't a problem for us at all. However, when I met one of the owners' friends down at the pool he showed me his hand where one of the dogs had bitten him (the owners were not on the premises at the time). It was a small bite but had drawn blood. When Andre and Ria returned they dismissed his complaints and congratulated the dog for providing "security". It could easily have been a guest who was bitten and I guess their reaction would have been the same. All in all I wouldn't go back.

How unfortunate that your stay was not what you expected.
We do take your review very serious.
All our guests are invited for a sundowner during Sunset in the pavilion, our common area and everybody can bring his own drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. The instake is that our guest can learn from each other and we try to mingle in most of the time for tips and advices. They can also inform us when there are any problems with the house.
The problem with the shower was the heater, the cold water was still working. In the tropics the cold shower is never colder then 30 degrees. We reported the problem to our maintenance electricity company but they did not show up, even after 3 calls. Then André tried his luck and was able to fix the problem.
We do have an extra complete nice tiled shower for our guest with a heater, that the guest can use in emergencies.
As you can read in most of the other reviews Sunset Valley has extreem value for money. If we put standard aircon in then we have to increase the price. Now the guests have a choose and the price euro 5 per day is not so bad.
Rental a complete house is without roomservice.
We sincerely regret that you had the wrong impression and expectations of our place.
We have taken immediately action to put it even better in our site, so that people know exactly what to get.

After arriving very jetlagged from London at 10pm, Ria (the owner) graciously collected us from the airport despite our proposition to catch a taxi. Sunset Valley is a very quiet little resort (unless Holland is playing in the World Cup semi final!). Ria and Andre partied all night with their friends so no sleep for anyone. The communal kitchen is a bonus where you can buy food to cook or fix yourselves as there are no shops or restaurants within walking distance of the resort. You will need to hire a car or motorbike (which are available at the resort) as Kuah town is 15mins away and Chenang beach 20mins. Don't expect shopping in Langkawi to be anything like Kuala Lumpur - very little to buy, but if you are looking to relax and unwind with a book, this is a lovely place to do it. My friend and I had the farmhouse - the only down side was the lack of doors to the toilet/bathroom, hence no privacy and the lack of a mirror on the wall. Plus the hot water in the shower was a little complicated so perhaps some written instructions on the bathroom wall would be helpful. We loved Ria and Andre's two dogs, but if you don't like cats and dogs you may not like to stay here.

We stayed here (a group of 4 independent adults) for 4 days in July during our journey around Malaysia and genuinely wish we had had more time to spend here. We occupied the Forest and Field Houses... and the other houses were fully occupied during our stay although the place did not feel 'full' at all... the peaceful tranquility was not spoilt at all.

Here you really do have the best of all worlds:-
You want nature?...just look around you - Rice paddy fields and rubber tree forests.!
You want authenticity?...you're living in it - traditional, well maintained Malay houses.
You want home comforts?...you have a fridge, shower, cooker and even aircon (which, incidentally, despite the heat and humidity you won't need to use!)
You want independence?... each house is 'stand-alone' and self-sufficient.
You want help and guidance?... fantasic hosts Ria and Andre will do everything to ensure your stay is as perfect as they can make it.

This isn't intended to sound like an advertisement, but it is actually a true summation of what we feel Sunset Valley has to offer it's guests. Much has already been said about the site, the immaculately kept grounds and the superb facilities - all I shall add is that it is clear that there has been an eye to detail in every aspect of this resort - and the quality standard in the accomodation is extremely high.

Ria and Andre make very attentive and friendly hosts and have tried to think of everything beforehand to make your stay comfortable. They strive to add a personal touch and this makes you feel 'at home' and valued as a guest. The dogs Bert and Lily were always welcome companions on our verandahs and reminded us of our pets at home...

Having read previous positive reviews on Tripadvisor, we had high expectations of Sunset Valley and wondered whether it would be able to meet them... well it not only met them, but it surpoassed them by a long way. The reality is much better than you can express in words - experience Sunset Valley for yourselves and you'll see what we mean.

We stayed at Sunset Valley for a week with 2 children aged 6 and 4, and it's the most enjoyable and relaxing holiday we can remember since having children. We stayed in the Forest house, which has the advantage of 2 separate bedrooms (the master has a sitting area too), plus a large verandah area that doubles as a dining and living area, and a good-sized kitchen and separate bathroom. We could easily prepare all meals in the well-equipped kitchen, or go out and about the island to sample the fantastic food.

The houses are traditional wooden Malay dwellings, and cope very well with the heat, humidity, and the occasional torrential downpour. While the Forest house has an airconditioning unit, we didn't turn it on at all. The buildings are perfectly situated to take advantage of the cool afternoon breezes rising from the valley and the rice paddies. There are fans in the bedrooms, verandah and kitchen, and the mosquito netting on the beds did its job, plus made the girls feel like they were sleeping in princess beds. The kids also adored the friendly animals that live in the main house with the hosts Andre and Ria. The dogs and cats were regular (and often involuntary) visitors to our house, and tolerated the excessive attention with exceedingly good grace, and far more patience than I would have expected from any animal. We were quite comfortable letting the kids run around as the whole property is fenced, and you can see a lot of it while sitting on the verandah reading or relaxing. It was much nicer than being confined to a hotel room!

The common pool and cabana with a bar and lounges sits just above the rice paddies, and the view at sunset is beautiful, with the clouds hovering above the distant mountains as the sky changes colour.

Sunset Valley is situated in a more rural area of Langkawi, but as the island is small it's easy and inexpensive to hire a car, moped or taxi to get around. There is not much traffic, and even the busiest parts of Kuah are easy for anyone used to driving in a small town. Andre and Ria also provide a common kitchen area where you can use a variety of different appliances, as well as buy supplies from the range of food and drinks they have available. The prices are very similar to the supermarket, and we bought a lot of food for the kids here, ingredients to cook with, as well as snacks, softdrinks, wine, beer and ground coffee.

Andre and Ria are enthusiastic, energetic and organised without being pushy. They are happy to offer advice, and are always helpful without anything appearing to be a problem for them. They organised a group dinner on the terrace for a number of guests who were leaving the next day, and the company was very enjoyable, the food delicious, and excellent value for money. We were already considering returning after 2 days into our stay, and if there are any flights on sale we'll be back in a flash!

Me and my wife , after spending a glitzy weekend in Singapore , were looking for a different kind of experience in Langkawi . So , we opted to stay at this quaint resort called Sunset valley . While it has all the basic things needed for a civilized stay , including a fantastic pool , it has no mood spoilers like TV and loud music . I was a bit apprehensive whether the kids would enjoy in such a quiet place , but as it turned out , they couldn't have enough of the swimming pool ( they used it once till 11.00 in the night ! ) , or the canine friends Bert and Lily . We would wake up to the music of chirping birds and sleep to the chuckle of the lizard .
Highly recommended for those looking to stay close to nature , exploring the island at your own pace , enjoying the quiet to re-discover your selves and spending some serious quality time with the family .
The Van Der Hoffs took good care of us , and we felt more like friends rather than clients with them .
One small request : The place needs a small cafeteria , if not a full fledged restaurant , so that immediately on arrival , especially if one has kids in the group , one doesn't have to scramble to get supplies like bread and milk , and also cook . The cafeteria could have basic hunger quenching facilities like tea / coffee , sandwiches , pastries , omlets , scramble eggs... nothing fancy , but it would be a big help to families .

This holiday from start to finish, was fantastic !
Ria and Andre have an absolute gem in Sunset Valley, and they really do what they do well!
Everything about our stay was relaxing, stress free and this was aided by how well run the whole place was.
We stayed in the Farmers house and it was gorgeous well maintained and spacious, we had a lovely veranda to sit out on and watch the beautiful sunsets.
The highlight for us was the boat trip, you have to go out on their boat, what a wonderful evening, a few drinks and a lovely meal in The Hole in the Wall ! Hearing Ria and Andres stories of travelling around the world for 9 yrs was incredible, and just made us want to set of into the sunset on a boat!
Tangjun Rhu beach was our favourite beach, not a sole on it apart from us , no jelly fish, quiet relaxing and beautiful, its about a 20 min drive away and well worth a visit.
Theres plenty to do in Langkawi its a beautiful place and you feel as though your the first people to discover it as we found it so quiet ( a definite plus point).
The cable car is well worth doing ! very high !!!!
The swimming pool at Sunset Valley was lovely well kept grounds and friendly staff, and i definitely would go back there !
The down side is definitely the mozzies, we got bitten alive so definitely take spray !
All I can say is Ria and Andre thank you for making us feel so welcome, and our stay was fantastic would recommend to anyone ! totally loved it and keep doing what your doing :)

My family (2 adults plus 2 kids (3 and 5)) loved our stay at Forest House in Sunset Valley.

Forest house is cute, clean and spacious with 2 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchenette and a big deck that we used all the time as our living space. We loved watching the Tokay Lizard that lived on Forest House and seeing the women collecting rubber from the plantation behind it. It was the perfect place to stay in to really experience Langkawi.

The grounds at Sunset Valley are lovely and very well maintained. There’s heaps of room for the kids to run around and plenty of toys and games for them to use. We saw squirrels and flying fox’s and plenty of interesting birds, insects and lizards. The sunsets were beautiful and the chanting monks in the distance added to the relaxed vibe.

Sunset Valley is a great base to drive around Langkawi from (we hired a car from Andre and Ria) and a relaxing place to come home to each afternoon. Its 2 minutes drive to some yummy restaurants and great night markets.

Ria and Andre have a kitchen stocked like a well-priced 7/11, so if you need bread or beer (or anything else) you just take what you need, write it in the honesty book and pay at the end of your stay- very convenient. The beer fridge by the pool operates under the same system and we used it well! They also had frisbees, hulu hoops and heaps of other toys and games for the kids to use around the grounds or in the pool.

The negatives about our stay were that the bins didn’t get emptied regularly and air-con and toilet paper weren’t included in the accommodation price. But these drawbacks were incidental and completely overshadowed by all the great things about Sunset Valley.

We loved our stay in Forest House at Sunset Valley and would highly recommend it. A beautiful and relaxing place to stay and great value for money!
