Sunset Valley Holiday Houses
Certificate of Excellence

Sunset Valley was a truly wonderful experience for us. Is a kind of malaysian village museum but for tourist use, as is formed by 5 authentic malaysian houses, brought from all around the island, with the oldest one having around 150 years old. All the houses are having a natural ventilation system so you are free of any air conditioning. Although old, the houses have all the facilities of a modern accomodation.
What we particulary like was the perfect green area of the courtyard and also the barbeque and pool area , where we can have a perfect relaxed evening with great sunset views.
The hosts Gudrun and David are really friendly and can offer very good advices on what to do on the island (many thanks also for the recommandation of the Sky Bar in KL)
Sunset Valley is situated in the middle of the island, of about 15-20 minutes drive from Pentag Cenang, so would be advisable to rent a car to move around.
Overall, the entire experince there was just great and I would higly recommending it as an authentic and unique malaysian experience at western standards.

Room Tip: the Farmer house is a good option

We had a WONDERFUL time at sunset valley. Really nice place, plenty of room and privacy in the middle of the jungle and rice paddies, so green and beautiful. Nice swimming pool (especially at sunset). I would repeat the experience in a heartbeat. Thank you to our hosts David and Gudrun for taking care of us and making our stay so special. GO CHECK THIS PLACE OUT, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED.

Sunset Valley is easily one of the most lovely places I've ever had the pleasure in staying. As our Malaysian holiday was the first proper meet up between me and my man we were looking for somewhere special. Sunset Valley definately exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Paddy Hut. This at 150 years old was the oldest dwelling on offer. It was totally charming with stained glass windows, a thatched roof and resident geckos! The bathroom was funky and modern, but worked suprisingly well design wise. A large ceiling fan kept us cool at night and the views from our window were out of this world! The whole vibe of Sunset Valley is beautifully laid back, but organised enough so that we really felt looked after. We opted for daily breakfasts. These were brought promptly to us and were healthy and varied. The pool was available for use at any time and we always had it to ourselves which was a bonus. There's a covered area adjacent to the pool where you can prepare food, have a barbeque or relax and have drinks with friends. Thus Sunset Valley makes the perfect place to stay whether you' re with friends or family. Gudren and David who own Sunset Valley are very friendly and helpful, always available, yet not intrusive at all. They have three gorgeous dogs too who for us really made our stay as we were missing our hounds! All in all I'd say the only hard thing about staying at Sunset Valley is that eventually you have to leave! Hopefully though we'll be back again one day!

Room Tip: All huts have amazing views I believe.

What can I say about Sunset Valley that has not already been said before, it is one of the nicest self-catering houses we have stayed in worldwide. Each of the 5 houses has it's own unique character and they are spaced apart far enough to ensure each has privacy. The houses themselves are constructed from top to bottom in hardwood, beautiful craftmanship, I spent a long time relaxing on the veranda looking at the magificent view and also admiring the wonderful craftmanship of the house!
The owners David and Gudrun are helpful and very accommodating. They made us feel very welcome. We travelled with our two daughters (6 and 2) and they had a ball in the pool, playing with the dogs and experiencing some of the amazing wildlife that is right on the doorstep.
I could not recommend this place highly enough, and will hopefully return in the not-too-distant future.

We were looking for relaxation, fresh air, beautiful scenery, sunsets, a pool, open spaces and a self-catering chalet with room for the whole family on a reasonable budget. We found all this and more at Sunset Valley. We really enjoyed getting to know David and Gudrun who are charming, sociable and humorous people who treated us more like family than guests. They are very interesting and are also passionate conservationists who have organized litter cleaning operations involving hundreds of volunteers through the Rotary social service program which they coordinate. The rooms are lovely little Malay-style houses with nice western kitchens and modern bathrooms. At night you will hear all the sounds of the forest so light sleepers beware! But we soon acclimatized and came to love the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The views from the balcony are stunning, just rice paddies all the way to the horizon and then the mountains in the background, and the houses are in lovely lightly forested grounds with a large lawn where the children can play and run. The pool and bar area is great - you just bring your own beers and music and chill out to your hearts content - meet David and Gurdrun and socialize with the other guests. If you don't like dogs you may be in for a shock as Boris, Sunny and their brother have the run of the place which was great for my kids who love animals and don't have the chance to experience dog ownership at home. David and Gudrun helped us to find very economical car hire which is essential as the Sunset Valley is remote - but very central so you can get anywhere easily and gas is very cheap on the island. They set us up on a fantastic mangrove tour with Selva - a fellow ecologist and litter obsessive who was fantastic with our children (boy 7 girl 6) and we saw bats, dingos, dolphins, snakes and kingfishers and swam at a picturesque beach and had lunch at the famed 'hole in the wall' yachtie anchorage. Anyway - if you're looking for five star maids service and a Sheraton experience, this may not be for you. If you fancy watching the sunset with a beer by the pool, sharing travel stories with the other guests whilst your kids run and play in the gardens with the dogs, cook your own meals and do the washing up and experience a truly fabulous Malay style experience, then look no further! We loved it, and thanks again David and Gudrun - who even drove us to the airport to say goodbye - we'll be back again :-)

I chanced upon this place when i googled "best kampung stay langkawi" and immediately fell in love with it. I cancelled my previous reservation with another hotel just to be here- it's worth it! I travelled with my mum and we didnt do much sports/adventure activities in Langkawi, so i feel that my stay here is THE highlight! Awesome to have breakfast at the verandah and to enjoy the sights and sounds....my best time to be at the house is about 7+ am and 5+ pm when i see their resident dogs wake up and play in the evenings. i really love the gently sloping hill overlooking the paddy fields and spent abundant time in the field playing with their lovely dogs and just sitting. That to me is the highlight cos it's quiet, peaceful and serene. David and Gudrun are wonderful hosts who look after their guests well. This place is terrific for those who wants simplicity(over TV) and looking for idle, languid pleasures with the typical to-be-expected kampung 'visitors'(mosquitos, ants, geckos- absolutely negligible and must be overlooked, relative to the serene beauty of this place).Overall, a must-stay if you're in Langkawi!

Room Tip: Paddy House- suitable for two people. Really quaint room with simple modern facilities.
