Sunset Valley Holiday Houses

My husband and I stayed there last August after a hectic vacation in Japan. It was located in a quiet and tranquil part of the island and Ria and Andre were lovely hosts, who took the trouble to invite us for dinner in town. We admired how they well they preserved the kampong houses and their grounds; it's very difficult with the heat and humidity in southeast asia.
However, this is not a hotel and one should not expect any turndown service in this unless you pay an extra fee.
And unlike some other reviewers, we thought that the view of the ricefields were not spectacular, considering we were already spolit by the resplendent beauty of Bali.
The toilet paper issue freaked me out a little too but since we stayed for only 2N, I was tolerated it.
All in all, it's a nice and casual place to rest and relax, and it's a great value for money.

Our stay in Sunset Valley was very nice. We went there as a family of four and stayed at the Gate House. The house is meant for only two people, so the hosts (Ria and Andre) made space for our kids in the studio they usually don't rent out. The best part was, there are cars you can rent our if you want to venture out.

The service was very personal. Hans is the chef there and made food according to our kids' liking. He and his wife even went out for dinner with us in town where we had the best seafood!
We also enjoyed the mangroves cruise on Ria and Andre's boat.
The only drawback was there was no food as soon as we went there, since there is no restaurant, but they were talking about having some frozen food ready in the freezer. There is however, a nice kitchen where you can buy and cook food.

Sunset Valley boasts a wonderful collection of holiday houses in traditional style, presided over by a delightful Dutch couple who do everything within their power to make one's stay memorable and enjoyable.
Langkawi is full of modern, well-run hotels close to the beach and we wanted something different this time. It's not by the sea, though you can be at the coast in a few minutes by car. Ria and her husband are very knowlegeable about the island (from the best restaurants to identifying the local wildlife) and are completely hands-on in their running of the place. They can fix you up with a car; they took us to a delicious and cheap restaurant one evening and every morning they joined us and the other guests for breakfast together.
Oh, and the sunsets really are beautiful here.
If you want somewhere to use as a base while you explore the island, this is perfect. If you want to stay in all day or you have children (or spouses) who can't survive without television then I'd say you're stuck with a beach hotel, but come back without them next time.

We spent a full week with 3 young kids (among which a 6 months baby) and we enjoyed a lot the house with large terrace, the swimming pool almost just for us, the sunset from the very neat and flowered garden. We value above all the presence and very good advice from our hosts, so thanks to a rented car and a trustful baby sitter, we could enjoy dinners for 2 in town while our kids were safely sleeping.
Just be cautious with insects and mosquitos that enter the house, we should have asked mosquito nets since the first night...
Otherwise, the nature is great at sunset valley and just few centimeters from your house, which let our boys play with frogs or caterpillars in the garden for hours...
Don't expect too much from the food though: supermarkets are not so well granted with diverse western food, and local food is not so great.
Don't miss the boat tour in the mangroves, a very nice day from 10am to 3pm with interesting guide and lots to learn and discover for the kids.

Room Tip: Field House (largest terrace and the most remote)

We stayed in the farmer house for 4 nights and it was fantastic. We loved the surrounding area and the peacefullness of it. Ria and Andre were so so sweet and very helpful. The houses were just amazing if you want to experience a traditional Malay house.
This is a really good place for people who want to avoid the crowds in Langkawi.
We loved it and definately worth the money! We will come back again for sure!!

My husband and I stayed here with our 4 month old baby and 4 year old. We really loved it. The Paddy house was lovely. We felt very relaxed here with our family. We hired a car from Sunset Valley and found it very easy to travel around the island. I would definitely recommend Sunset Valley if you are travelling with or without children. We would like to come back and stay longer next time.

You’ll love this place if you don't mind sharing your holiday house with a gecko and sleeping with windows wide open for a cool night breeze. You are staying in the middle of the island (rental car recommended) and in the middle if beautiful Langkawi nature. This place is not for you if you rely on air conditioned rooms and service staff to make your holiday. It is a small resort with only five holiday houses and the private houses where the “creators” André and Ria live. Both were great hosts – we felt more being with friends than on a commercial resort. The holiday houses are well built and in very good shape. We stayed with our almost 2 year old baby boy in “forest house”. Were looking for a place with 2 bed rooms and own kitchen. The “forest house” was great as it had the space we needed and a truly grand terrace with a lovely view as a plus. “Sunset Valley” is a relaxed place where you feel quickly at home. The name is well picked as you can experience a stunning sunset while having a dip in the pool. The pool is medium sized, has very nice unchlorinated water and is very nicely located with a view on the valley. We went for a dip every morning and late afternoon. Our infant boy loved it, too. Having free wireless internet access at our holiday house was a much appreciated plus! André & Ria offer few very useful services - rental car, massage, basic food supply and a boat trip. They do the unique “sunset boat tour” with the boat they used when sailing the world. The tour and the stories from their world sail was a great highlight of our stay. Again, we felt more like guests than tourists. Don’t miss the traditional Malaysian massage that Ria will happily organise for you. A great “kick-start” to get rid of any stress you may still carry with you when arriving on Langkawi island :-)
