we stayed at the Andaman and decided to walk over next door's Pavilion for dinner because we read great TA reviews and if we were to get a bit tipsy, which we always do, we would just walk back along the beach. Knowing that the restaurant is part of the 5 star Datai, we expected that it would be pricey so we were not very surprised to see the pricing on the menu. A few samples: mixed seafood spicy soup for 48MYR, 5 spices roasted duck for 75MYR, curry NZ lamb for 78MYR, and no bottle of wine less than 135MYR. You can mix and match appetizer / main course / dessert for 210MYR/p. At this pricing it was probably the most expensive Thai restaurants we had been to, surpassing the Blue Elephant in Paris. We were OK with this because we love good food and had splurge occasionally on 3-Michelin star dinners. The restaurant itself extends out from a cliff and sits on tall stilts, over looking the Andaman sea . I suppose the view was part of the price. We did not have a reservation and the restaurant was fully booked that night so we had to settle for a balcony table at the "dining room" a few steps in from the cliff. By the way, we ordered the exact items mentioned above :). The soup came in a clay pot and when lid opened I knew it was going to be a fantastic soup. The steaming tamarind flavor infused with fresh crab, prawns, squids was amazing. The broth was clear and seasoned perfectly, as opposed to sometimes too salty or too sour for typical Thai soup. We thought to ourselves that this was going to be a great meal and definitely worth the price. But then came the two main courses and we were terribly disappointed. We chose duck and lamb because we want to see how they prepare dishes that are known to be difficult to prepare, besides the fact that we love duck and lamb dishes. Duck and lamb have quite unique and distinct flavor as well as texture that is not easy to mask. The Pavilion managed exactly just that. Both dishes were heavily seasoned which was fine for Thai dishes but for a high end restaurant I expect the season to complement the meat rather than completely destroy it. If I were to have a bite on the duck dish without knowing what it was I would have guessed it was pork, or dry old chewy beef for the lamb. I will give the staff a high rating for great service, but I would not pay another visit especially when you can get that kind of food for 1/5 the price down Pantai Cenang.

We were really looking forward to our trip to the Thai Restaurant at The Datai as Thai food is our favourite cuisine.

We were really disappointed with both the starter (prawn soup) and the main course (Thai red curry, lamb curry). The food is distinctly average, and I would happily pay RM100-200 for this quality of food, but to be charged over RM550 was a joke. Luckily the helpful waiter agreed and reduced the bill, but we still paid RM400 for two people including drinks!

The setting is beautiful though!

We visited this restaurant twice it was that good. We even travelled 30 mins from the Four Seasons. We had the prawn and crab cakes, chilli beef salad, duck curry and the red chicken curry - followed by sorbets and ice cream. It was a little expensive but the food was really great and we would definitely recommend it as one of our best finds in Langkawi. For two price was c400RM but it's about par for hotel prices.

We ate at the Pavilion while staying next door at The Andaman. From the moment we arrived the service was amazing and we were seated at a table on the edge overlooking the beautiful rain forest with two monkeys nestled in the trees.

We were offered a drink straight away on sitting down and then handed a large Thai menu and a comprehensive wine list. We ordered the soft shell crab for entree and the duck curry, oyster sauce vegetables and Pad Thai for mains...it came with complementary steamed rice. I ordered a bottle of Shaw and Smith Sav Blanc. All up with a beer to start it was about 400 MYR ($130 AUD).

We continued to enjoy watching the monkeys play in the trees and eat the large leaves while we waited a very short time for our entree. The soft shell crab was the best i have had and very generous serve.

The waiter helpfully asked whether we were ready for our mains...i was still full from the crab and asked for 10 minutes which they readily obliged. The flavor of the duck curry was amazing and if i was to fault anything it was just cut to thin. The oyster sauce and vegetables were also tasty. The Pad Thai was presented well in a net of egg. It was very tasty but not as impressive as the duck or soft shell crab.

The service throughout was first class, the view from the top of the trees in a rain forest up there with sitting in the alps and the food really nice. We then enjoyed a stroll along the beach in very warm water in the dark back to the hotel. I would recommend this experience to anyone staying in the area.
