We've just had our second trip to Sea Gypsy (we're a family of 5 with the kids aged 5, 3 & 1). The resort is small and basic but has everything that you actually need so long as you are not after TV, airconditioning, internet access, swimming pool, etc. The beach is all white sand and no rocks or stones. The kids spent all day on the beach digging, building sandcastles, jumping in the waves. There is good snorkelling at the end of the beach or you can go on an organised trip to another island. There is a great kids playground. The staff are really friendly and helpful. There is a kids club for 4+ and daily diving and snorkelling trips. The younger kids are encouraged to eat dinner, together cementing friendships they've made during the day.

We spent 4 nights at Sea Gypsy Village Resort with our 3 kids. Had a great time, it felt as if we had been completely away for weeks - always a good sign....

The location is perfect: Just 3- 3.5 hours from Singapore (by car and boat, no flight) a secluded beach, great view, with all the cabins/chalets in the shade under the trees. The beach is clean and safe (shallow water, sandy bottom, almost no current), the area where the cabins and restaurant is perfect to have the kids just roam around and play football, climb trees etc, while mum/dad sit in the restaurant or the veranda of their cabin and read a book. It's got a cosy feeling to it, which makes it easy especially for the kids to make new friends.

The staff is very friendly, flexible and efficient. Everything is well organized, the resort organizes hikes, snorkeling trips, scuba diving, and for the kids things such as a sandcastle building competition or T-shirt drawing. There is also a kids club, which is open in the mornings, though our kids never went there because they were too busy playing on the beach or climbing trees, collecting coconuts with their new friends, etc.

One can the rent boogie boards, scuba gear, fishing gear, kayaks, small sailing boats at the dive shop. Snorkeling at the Sea Gypsy Resort beach is average: there is a nice spot all the way to towards the rocks on the left side of the beach (when facing the sea). Better is to hike to the Rimba resort (20 minutes easy hike, path starts next to the power generator), and scuba there, either directly from the beach or better yet walk all the way to the right, take the -not very well maintained concrete path over the rocks to the end, and go in there. Nice coral and fish.

Mind you, this is NOT a resort where you have 5 star food, massages, a gym/spa, and so on. The chalets are really very simple cabins, it's cosy but not very luxurious. No wifi, mobile phone signal work only now and then, no a la carte dining, but a (very tasty) different dish every evening, a simple but good buffet for breakfast and lunch (cple of western and asian choices).

One other warning: There are lots of mosquitos and sandflies, so do apply repellant rigorously, especially the kids. Nevertheless chances are you will get bitten, so if you mind a couple of insectbites, you may want to reconsider coming here.

We stayed 2 nights in a family chalet, which was great. We had sea view from the terras and a playground right in front of the chalet. Lovely beach for swimming and playing in the waves. For snorkling, we went to another island, with a white coral beach and clear blue water. Perfect getaway to relax and get some fresh air. It is 5 hours drive from KL. They have a good cook.

Room Tip: With older kids the family chalet is a good option as they have there own room and entrance. With yo...

It was our 3rd visit and the 8 days just flew by. This place is great if you want to be away from the maddening city of KL. I wish it was a little closer but the 5 hour drive adds to the flavour of the trip. Be it on your own, with family or a loved one, Sea Gypsy has it. Its how you want to enjoy it - snorkeling, dives, walks, bask in the sun, or just laze and do nothing. All in your own time. Nobody bothers you or are nosy. Linda and team has done an exemplary job with this place. If only there were more of such clean, safe and peaceful places for travellers in malaysia. Not a place for the air-cond, shopping, resort travellers but more for those who enjoys nature, living in basic malay style house, with drinking water from the well, chirpy crickets in the woods, star bright night skies and waves as lullaby as you doze on the beach at night....lovely..

Room Tip: Best chalet we had ... facing the sea

Sea Gypsy is located on a fantastic beach, with a beautiful backdrop of lush jungle. It’s quiet, clean, has friendly staff and is well managed by its UK owners. We've had a relaxing long weekend escaping from Singapore. Guests are almost exclusively Western, and the resort is child friendly.

We will, however, very unlikely be back. Our A-frame hut was clean but basic, with very uncomfortable mattresses and a cold water shower. No aircon, although that's ok as you don't really need it. A big disappointment was the less than inspiring food. Sometimes cheapish Western fare (soggy battered fried fish and white rice, anyone? Or perhaps stale cereal? Wait – I’ll have the omelets with processed cheese glued on top!) plus some very bland and dumbed-down 'local' food - you can eat better at the most modest road shack or hawker stall in Malaysia/Singapore. To be fair, some of the food was alright but mealtime was definitely nothing to look forward to. Plus, you had to be quick as the ‘better’ stuff ran out fast and was not always replenished…

We paid around RM 1,800 for 3 nights (couple sharing an A-Frame hut), full board and transfers from/to Singapore. For Malaysia the resort its well overpriced, esp. if you compare it to what some other places on the island are charging.

We'll definitely be back to Sibu, just not to Sea Gypsy...sorry.

Room Tip: Ask for a hut near the beach and away from the generator shed.

I have visited Sea Gypsy in March 2012 for a long week end and decided to spend a full week this August. I recommend this resort for the following reasons :
- No internet, no mobile phone, no TV... just what you need to really disconnect from this crazy world, and at a manageable distance from Singapore
- Great beach, with nice waves and warm water
- Staff is friendly and helpful - a special kuddo to Richard, the son of the owner, divemaster and operations manager, who is really friendly and entertaining with both adults and kids.
- although basic, the chalets are comfortable enough (the beds are good !) , clean and solid. All of them have a view on the beach and my favourite moment was to start my afternoon nap with the door open looking at the sea...
- loads of stuff to entertain the kids (playground, kids club) : it's really a place where as a parent you never feel uncomfortable with your somewhat noisy kids... although I must admit that some screamers on our last week end were a tiny bit annoying (but there were not ours !!!)

On the other hand, be warned...
- the food is not great. The best might be the breakfast and the bbq, but don't expect much of it.
- there are sandflies ! funnily on our first visit we did not get bitten, following recommendations for oil... but this second time all my family got eaten alive by these blood suckers ! No matter the amount of oil or repellent, everyday we had 10 more bites on our skin :-(
- the snorkeling around is not that great, and of course that's not the fault of the resort... but the coral reefs are really in bad shape and nowhere near what I had seen in Thailand.

Ex-pat family run Jungle Island resort on the beach of Pulua Sibu. Basic wooden cabins with beds, mozzie nets, bathrooms and clean towels/linen. No need for anything other than a sarong, a good book, swim wear. mozzie repellant and sunscreen. We didn't listen to advice and took a suitcase to accommodate parents and 2 kids and we came home with half of the contents unused. The 22 cabins are approx. 60 paces to the sea and the bar doesn't close until the last guest leaves. Great food (inclusive), cosmopolitan guests and the chance to dive/snorkel; we swam with Reef Sharks! Oh and if that wasn't enough there is a kids club every morning where they can beach comb or jungle trek whilst you chill. We will definitely go back - most of our fellow guests had visited many times before. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: The family cabin with a double bed and bunk-beds is a little small for four, so if you want some pri...
