It was our 3rd visit and the 8 days just flew by. This place is great if you want to be away from the maddening city of KL. I wish it was a little closer but the 5 hour drive adds to the flavour of the trip. Be it on your own, with family or a loved one, Sea Gypsy has it. Its how you want to enjoy it - snorkeling, dives, walks, bask in the sun, or just laze and do nothing. All in your own time. Nobody bothers you or are nosy. Linda and team has done an exemplary job with this place. If only there were more of such clean, safe and peaceful places for travellers in malaysia. Not a place for the air-cond, shopping, resort travellers but more for those who enjoys nature, living in basic malay style house, with drinking water from the well, chirpy crickets in the woods, star bright night skies and waves as lullaby as you doze on the beach at night....lovely..

Room Tip: Best chalet we had ... facing the sea

Sea Gypsy is located on a fantastic beach, with a beautiful backdrop of lush jungle. It’s quiet, clean, has friendly staff and is well managed by its UK owners. We've had a relaxing long weekend escaping from Singapore. Guests are almost exclusively Western, and the resort is child friendly.

We will, however, very unlikely be back. Our A-frame hut was clean but basic, with very uncomfortable mattresses and a cold water shower. No aircon, although that's ok as you don't really need it. A big disappointment was the less than inspiring food. Sometimes cheapish Western fare (soggy battered fried fish and white rice, anyone? Or perhaps stale cereal? Wait – I’ll have the omelets with processed cheese glued on top!) plus some very bland and dumbed-down 'local' food - you can eat better at the most modest road shack or hawker stall in Malaysia/Singapore. To be fair, some of the food was alright but mealtime was definitely nothing to look forward to. Plus, you had to be quick as the ‘better’ stuff ran out fast and was not always replenished…

We paid around RM 1,800 for 3 nights (couple sharing an A-Frame hut), full board and transfers from/to Singapore. For Malaysia the resort its well overpriced, esp. if you compare it to what some other places on the island are charging.

We'll definitely be back to Sibu, just not to Sea Gypsy...sorry.

Room Tip: Ask for a hut near the beach and away from the generator shed.

I have visited Sea Gypsy in March 2012 for a long week end and decided to spend a full week this August. I recommend this resort for the following reasons :
- No internet, no mobile phone, no TV... just what you need to really disconnect from this crazy world, and at a manageable distance from Singapore
- Great beach, with nice waves and warm water
- Staff is friendly and helpful - a special kuddo to Richard, the son of the owner, divemaster and operations manager, who is really friendly and entertaining with both adults and kids.
- although basic, the chalets are comfortable enough (the beds are good !) , clean and solid. All of them have a view on the beach and my favourite moment was to start my afternoon nap with the door open looking at the sea...
- loads of stuff to entertain the kids (playground, kids club) : it's really a place where as a parent you never feel uncomfortable with your somewhat noisy kids... although I must admit that some screamers on our last week end were a tiny bit annoying (but there were not ours !!!)

On the other hand, be warned...
- the food is not great. The best might be the breakfast and the bbq, but don't expect much of it.
- there are sandflies ! funnily on our first visit we did not get bitten, following recommendations for oil... but this second time all my family got eaten alive by these blood suckers ! No matter the amount of oil or repellent, everyday we had 10 more bites on our skin :-(
- the snorkeling around is not that great, and of course that's not the fault of the resort... but the coral reefs are really in bad shape and nowhere near what I had seen in Thailand.

Ex-pat family run Jungle Island resort on the beach of Pulua Sibu. Basic wooden cabins with beds, mozzie nets, bathrooms and clean towels/linen. No need for anything other than a sarong, a good book, swim wear. mozzie repellant and sunscreen. We didn't listen to advice and took a suitcase to accommodate parents and 2 kids and we came home with half of the contents unused. The 22 cabins are approx. 60 paces to the sea and the bar doesn't close until the last guest leaves. Great food (inclusive), cosmopolitan guests and the chance to dive/snorkel; we swam with Reef Sharks! Oh and if that wasn't enough there is a kids club every morning where they can beach comb or jungle trek whilst you chill. We will definitely go back - most of our fellow guests had visited many times before. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: The family cabin with a double bed and bunk-beds is a little small for four, so if you want some privacy opt for the larger 2 bedroom cabins. Plus there is a little adventure playground right outside to occupy them.

Went to Sea Gypsy along with my family (wife and kids, 8, 5 and 1 years old). Had a really good time. Easy to relax without cellphones, internet and with food included. Amazing snorkle excursions and jungle walks. Stayed for nine nights and are very pleased with the hospitality and level of service. Got to try scuba diving. The fantastic scenery and calm atmosphere is worth having to deal with getting used to cold showers, getting bit by sandflies and managing without aircon.
