On a business trip and was booked into the 'newest' hotel nearest to office. Was told that this was an abandon project since the financial crisis before being revived in 2009.

Location was average. Within walking distance to Plaza Pelangi and loads of specialist clinics if you needed medical attention. XD.

The much talked about foodcourt could be viewed from room window but didn't try that out as was out with colleagues in more comfortable settings.

Room has ample space and amenities. Wifi provided free but signal could be erratic. Had a blackout at night which woke me up thinking I was in a sauna. Calls to maintenance to fix drew slow response.

Breakfast was good with ample choice and refills. Loads of Korean tourists who were not so well mannered barging their way around, reserving countless tables for their yet to wake up comrades and speaking at the top of their voices.

Staff were either ill trained or lack pride in their work. They were either unsure of themselves or the hotel's services or were speaking in a tone that put the message across as you owe them big time for having taken them away from their gossiping. They lack courteous and prefer to chat among themselves. Coffee house waiter helped himself to the breakfast in full view of guests and ate at the bar counter openly. Does not greet guests except for the concierge.

I stayed 1 night in a Deluxe Room at this hotel recently. The room size was OK, but the room was poorly maintained. The air-conditioning unit periodically emitted light sprays of water, and water was leaking onto the floor from the bathroom sink. Also, a seminar I was attending in one of the meeting rooms was initially somewhat disrupted by the air-conditioning having broken down. For the price the hotel charges, I would pay a bit more and stay at the Thistle.

I've been reliably and repeatedly assured that this is the best that Johor Bahru has to offer, and I'm willing to accept that. It's nothing special - a somewhat run-down three star hotel with very good service.

The rooms are drab, but fine. My only complaint concerns the very cheap pillows: could they not do better than that?

However, the gym is barely acceptable. The two treadmills are so worn out that the actual conveyors are stripped of their traction and actually slippery - dangerously slippery. Run at your own risk.

The hotel deserves credit for free wireless - though it is slow and occasionally drops out.

Still, you can't beat the price. The pretty good dinner buffet ran around US~$15, and the overall price wasn't bad at all.

All in all, I'd call it equivalent to a US Super 8 - and that's not bad, considering the alternatives around town. So if you must stay in Johor, then stay here.

It's a new hotel, furnished in 2009. No funny, old carpet smell. Rooms are ok in size, enough for luggage and extra room to walk about.

I generally prefer this hotel than New York Hotel as the latter's facilities are outdated/old.

The WiFi maybe free but not too stable. You might want to ask fora room that is near to the WiFi point to get connection.

Location-wise, close to Pelangi & Holiday Inn, JB. Less than 10 mins to Singapore Customs. As for hotel-wise, slightly old, good location and service was reasonable. Room and bathroom was spacious. Beautiful carpets throughout the hotel (but was old and slightly discoloured at certain areas). Could not comment much on facilities because most of the time was out of hotel. Good for short stay and reasonably priced.

We stayed at the Grand Paragon from 1st to 3rd of June 2010. Ours was a D'Paragon room on the 12th floor with 4 queen sized bed - very spacious indeed! Too bad there is only one toilet. We had a nice view of the pool which is located on the 11th floor. A breathtaking view of the city from the pool - my sons had the pool to themselves as it was a weekday.

The room was very clean and new with a 32" LCD TV. The free wi-fi also worked well in the room as well as the pool area. I was hesitating at first whether to check back to Grand Paragon Hotel as there was a black out when I checked in early this year and waited the whole afternoon without electricity and air-con (like sauna) before checking into New York Hotel. Grand Paragon Hotel definitely look better and newer. Good choice as my boys really enjoyed the pool.

There is a food court behind the hotel - I think it is called centrepoint. You must try the food there - so cheap and nice. Esp the BBQ chicken wing - we could eat 6 each. The oyster omelette and the Malay satay were also very nice. My husband also love the penang kway tiao.

The location of the hotel was also good - very near to Plaza Pelangi. I would always visit the french restaurant near Plaza Pelangi. Chez Papa serves very good foie gras and escargot.

Stayed for one week, business center closed and staff useless to print boarding passes. Lots of attitude from staff, at least at the front desk and woman restaurant supervisor(?) not completely sure who she was but one thing I know is she is useless. Staff in restaurant was a mixed bag of nice and then just plain rude! Claim to not speak english then you can hear them having a conversation in english. Tell you to go get your own water! Then point in that direction and walk off. Food recycled from the buffet like prison food! One day tomatoes on salad bar then next day same ones in some dish! They waste nothing for sure!
After telling the front desk we were unsatisfied we threatened them with a trip advisor review and a letter to the manager and was told to voice my opinion...here it is guys you asked for it.
I have traveled many many places world wide and never stayed anywhere quite like this. Staff have the most fake smiles of any staff I have ever seen.
NOT ALL ROOMS COME AS ADVERTISED! We booked three rooms and two of them were to have two queen beds in each room, but instead had two twin beds. What they offer us? 10 dollars off each day. Sorry didn't make anyone sleep more comfortable. Bed hard as a board. All rooms are supposed to have stand up showers and they don't.
SMOKING ON NON SMOKING FLOORS! They actually have an ashtray at the elevators! That didn't get changed the week we were there!
Towels literally falling apart as you used them strings and sheets with holes and stains.
Obviously a cash cow for some company as they don't maintain anything.
Had several cock roaches in suite and many dead in hallways not being cleaned up.
The coffee tasted like volcanic ash. Room had water damage to ceiling that looked like it ran down wall behind paper and then became moldy. STAY AWAY and go somewhere else. Malaysia included. Severe disappointment. As a white man traveling you can't go outside at night as you can easily be mugged. We hit Thailand next and then Tokyo....go to Tokyo! Amazing service and clean as a whistle.
