It's beyond me how this hotel has received so many positive reviews. I was there for 1 night for work this week and am hoping I never have to do business in JB again if this is the best accommodation on offer. But it must just be me as the place was teeming with people of every nationality all day and night looking happy with life - not to mention these inexplicable reviews.

The room: this is a hotel's core business so they have to get it right... The bed was hard and the pillows rubbery. The iron didn't work. The shower leaked and dripped. There was nothing in the minibar. The cupboard with the automatic light wouldn't shut so it was on all night. I arrived at 12.30 a.m. and although a king bed in a no-smoking room had been booked and confirmed in Australia they couldn't give it to me .. either king in smoking or twin in non smoking. The TV stopped operating soon after it was turned on. The decor really doesn't deserve mention.

Breakfast: a large range of mediocre food

Dinner in the cafe: Mediocre. desperate for a drink I scoured the lobby and cafes to no avail - I was only squeezed fruit juice for the duration (I clearly missed the bar on the 23rd floor).

Saving Grace: staff, particularly the concierges, were friendly, helpful, thoughtful and kind - working in what must be a depressing environment. Had it not been for them this place would have got 1 star from me.

Close as the crow flies from Singaporean hotels but light years away in execution. Although apparently the appropriate standard for a 'Business Hotel in many peoples's eyes. Not mine.

This hotel is located within walking distance to the Pelangi mall and KSL mall so its convenient if you do not wish to venture far. Else, taxis are available and just 5-10mins to JB City Square or any other malls. There is a night market just outside the hotel which opens every monday.

Check-in was fast and efficient.

The rooms are dated but clean and comfortable. I got upgraded to an apartment and the room was huge. Great view of the city

Breakfast consists of the normal spread. Nothing fantastic but enough to start the day.

Not the best in the city, but safe enough.

Room Tip: City view on a high floor

we stayed at this hotel for 3 nights as we planned to go to legoland with our children. Initially we were given a room on the top (25th) floor which was great but soon realised that evening that it was just below the bar on the top floor so very noisy. Phoned the reception who quickly arranged for us to be moved to another room. Moved to the 12th floor which was much better and porter was very helpful in moving our things down for us. We stayed in a 2 bedroom family suite which was huge, including a sitting room with dining table and kitchenette (only with kettle and fridge though) and 2 large bedrooms either side. The only odd thing was that the suites appear to be quite different in layout from floor to floor but this wasn't an issue for us. Room was a bit dated but comfortable and clean. Breakfast had quite a good selection. Concierge was helpful with arranging transport to/from legoland. I booked our tickets direct with legoland on their website and the hotel arranged for a cab to take us to and from legoland for 120RM.
The location is quite good, withing walking distance to KSL plaza and pelangi plaza. or you can catch a cab to city square for about 10 RM. Shopping was better at city plaza and worth going to if you planned to buy reasonable quality items such as clothes etc. There is a hawker centre right behind the hotel also if you want to try some of the local food etc.
There is a massage place in the hotel also which was very good and prices reasonable. Pool was good for the kids.

Room Tip: choose a lower floor, higher floors can be noisy

Checking in at Grand Paragon Hotel under corporate booking was a little of a challenge. I was asked to produce my name card bearing the name of the company that enjoys corporate rate with the hotel. Since I am a client of the company that enjoys the hotel corporate rate, I was not able to produce the name card and therefore was not able to enjoy the corporate rate. Had to call the company staff to come to the hotel to assist in the checking in and it being a Sunday it was a little disastrous.

We took a room on 25th floor, a family suite. On 26 or 27th floor could have been some disco or some kind of clubs. The loud music kept us awake till the wee hours at night and we managed to have some quietude around 1.30am

Maintenance (who requested us to speak in malay) visited our room 4 times within an hour upon checking in. The air conditioner, tv, electric kettle, toilet flush were having problems.

All in all, it was not too bad. Maintenance service was prompt. Staff were friendly. That made up the not too great condition of the hotel.

Hotel is conveniently located. Within walking distance is the KSL shopping center

Room Tip: Do not stay on the 25 floor as it is very noisy. 23 or 24 floor may be affected too so check with staff when checking in
