“Good for a night.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014

Johor Bharu is hardly a "must see" destination but with that said it is a crucial stepping off point to Borneo (East Malaysia) and in all likelihood it is going to become even more important as Air Asia expands it's reach and as Singaporeans seek out alternative accommodation options.

Anyway, the Zen Zeng Hotel is a reasonable option for your overnight stay before flying off to Kuching in the morning. At first it does seem like the hotel is in the middle of nowhere BUT in fact it is only a short easy walk to the city. I am not sure how you would drive there but the walk is direct and easy enough.

Breakfast is included but that does not make it palatable. There is free WiFi but of course that does not guarantee that it is useable and there is a TV in the room but . . . yeah you guessed it; that doesn't make it watchable.
It was only for one night and I couldn't really find anything else close to my budget.

Room Tip: Any room will probably have to do.

First and the most important - if u go by car and use Google maps for God knows reason why it can't find it. Secondly - don't expect hotel to be located in a great place with nice rooms in (especially those rooms for smokers)
The room is very basic, somebody's slippers were inside our room. the furniture is not new.
Breakfast is jsut 2 tosts with jam and coffee.
From the other hand what are you expecting for this money??? Tip: please consider this hotel as just an overnight.

Dear friends,

If you are considering this establishment please ask yourself not once or even twice but as many times until it agrees with your own reasoning. This hotel has nothing to promise-as you can see the pictures are literally not represent faithfully. It is average in a sense of:
- room - I am sorry to informed it is very dull, when i check-in i was given a room with dull wall with unmatched bedding linen, it makes me dizzy if the interior of room is not coherent.
- location - it is very weird! located in shoplot actually but hidden somewhere - it gives impression of eerie area and i think it is quite quiet though! FOR INFO, the nearest walking distance mall is DANGA MALL! however nothing interesting there! So you must ascertain either the location can be a hindrance or not
- customer services - nothing signature service - they just do their job - but there is one day the staff was some kind of 'assuming' me as a citizen of people of republic of Indonesia because the way I enunciate my words, even though I am Malaysian from the East! I feel quite distracted with such assumption - I urged the Management who I supposed also ignorance about regional culture to relearn about geography. YES/NO staff. All the best for them anyway!
- Must say, the room rate is cheaper! plus breakfast next to Indian restaurant - Dont bother anyway it is just either (a) Bread or (b) Fried mee with coffee that is it! Oh... the owner of the restaurant is so COLD .. they will ask you like this "bread or fried mee" and if you request to recite.. she would raised her voice 10 decibel higher the same phrase "BREAD OR FRIED MEE" like that! what do you think .. it is rather weird for me as i dont expect to much anyway you pay what you get.! Some Country has better hospitality for certain .. All the best my friend.

We booked in here as we were planning on arriving by train and it was nearby, sadly this plan failed due to a derailment near Gemas so we actually came in by bus, but we were there anyway!
Pleasant staff, basic breakfast, toast or noodles, not particularly good wifi, but a big room and comfy bed.
The glass temple near by is a Hindu temple entirely coated with mirrors, well worth a look, though they do charge an entry and photography fee!

Stayed for three nights at the zen zeng.
Pros: Rooms good size, functioning hot shower, towels and toiletries provided, ac working well, very clean throughout, staff very helpful and friendly. Free drinking water provided.

Cons: location is a bit out of the town area if you are walking, only about 20 mins by foot to the mall though.

There is an excellent biriyani cafe opposite - village biriyani or something!
Oh and they have a lift so no lugging heavy bags up flights of stairs!
