Owner description: Kuti is a beautiful community wildlife reserve, working with the bordering villages to protect nature and support people living in the area. Accommodation ranges from camping to luxurious bush villas with barbecue area. Kuti has a restaurant, a shop and a bar to enjoy the sunset with a drink. The gate fees go to projects in the local communities. Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a non-profit trust managed by a Dutch couple and run by local staff and international volunteers. New volunteers are always welcome. A map with directions can be found on our website. If you come with public transport, you can ask the minibus to drop you at the Kuti turn-off and take a bike taxi from there. Or you go to Salima bus station and call a taxi (should be approx 6000 MWK). Children pay half price at the gate.

On a recent trip to Malawi I had the opportunity to visit Kuti Wildlife Reserve on two different occasions. While there I was able to get up close to some of the Reserves animals including Zebras, Giraffes, Sable, monkeys and their resident ostrich Evelyn. A long walk of animal spotting ended at the Sunset Deck where friendly staff manned a bar with cold drinks and snacks available. Sunsets are spectacular with an abundance of wildlife in the marshes and local fishermen singing in as they fished from canoes. Accommodations are rustic with solar lighting available after dark. Bathrooms and showers are clean and well maintained. When visiting bring walking shoes and a sun hat and if you plan on staying bring food and have it prepared by the resident cook. All of the staff including the managers, scouts, and guards work hard to make the Reserve a safe place for the wildlife and an amazing place to visit.

I volunteered at Kuti Wildlife reserve for 4 weeks. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, you get up close and personal with the wildlife in a way witch very few places can offer. Going to sunset deck is amazing and the sunset is incredible no matter the weather. I would love to back again but i would be scared i would be unable to leave!

“Nice mini safari”

If you do not have too high expectations then the Kuti Wildlife Reserve is a nice stop on the way to the lake. You will see monkeys, zebras, sable antelopes, maybe the giraffes and many other animals. As there are no dangerous animals you can also get out of the car and walk around. It doesn't take more than an hour or two to drive around and our kids love it. But of course you shouldn't expect a big game drive!

“Incredible wildlife, incredible atmosphere and incredible people”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

A a volunteer who have experienced Kuti for four absolutely amazing weeks, i can truly say that this place is a place for those who want to experience untouched nature, wild animals in the best possible habitats and people who give all they have, to help and preserve the animals. Whether you are going for a bike ride around the park, or just sit and enjoy the amazing sunset at Sunset Deck you're going to enjoy every second of your stay in Kuti. They have some amazing villas with everything the heart desire in the middle of the wildlife and with almost none potentially dangerous animals you can relax and enjoy nature to the fullest. Things you definitely need to do is: Take a walk/bike ride around the park, enjoy a drink at Sunset Deck, take a bike ride to the local town Salima where you can eat at the Ice Cream Shop and afterwards go for a walk around the craft markets, and many more things.. Generally everything is really cheap, the park entry, soft drinks, beers, A frames, the villas and so on. And if you are ever in doubt, don't hesitate to ask the always smiling scouts or manager of the place. I am positive that i will soon be going back to the place that has given me so much, and hopefully I can give it something back someday.

“A great experience”
Reviewed March 12, 2014

We had heard about Kuti from various colleagues and friends and thought we had to take a look. Kuti is self catering and the cooking is done on a braai type kitchen outside. We booked Kudu villa for a couple of nights. The villa was spacious and clean and the backup power inverter lasted most of the night keeping the fridge going and night lights.

Cooking was fun on efficient little ceramic wood stoves. The management have started adding meals and we had a couple of nice evening meals.

The resident wildlife is reasonably tame and will let you approach them reasonably close before running off. The reserve is small enough to walk around but take lots of water as the sun and heat can catch you even on a cooler day. The tracks are good enough for bikes and strollers so can be enjoyed by all.

The sunset deck is perfect overlooking the swamp with great views and a of course the sunset was spectacular.
