“A landmark oasis in Blantyre”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 28, 2011

This hotel far exceeded our expectations as the website is very modest. Set in the centre of Blantyre, it feels like another worked when you step through the front door. The grounds are beautiful and the pool setting inviting. Our rooms were very comfortable and included a very modern and updated en suite. Meals in the Gypsey restaurant, included in our half board, we delicious and the buffet extensive. Service was wonderful from beginning to end of our stay. I purchased a wifi card that enabled me to have access fo five hours which I found very satisfactory as it could also be used at other "hotspot" locations around the country. The hotel offered one free hour of Internet in the business center for those without their own computer.

Sunbird Mount Soche is very central to the city of Blantyre. It has access to the central business district. If someone were to come here for business, this should be the ideal location.

However, the pricing and the quality of room and service do not go together. The food is oily, takes 1 hour. The bathroom is average. Doors do not have bolts, which is the biggest turn off in Africa from a security standpoint. The staff is curteous, but needs to be reminded serveral times for simple requests. The price is around 130-170 USD, but really, the service and quality does not justify this price. I am aware of at least a dozen places in the world where that kind of price gives 5-7 star service

The hotel is controlled by the government and that sort of restricts the upgrades to service quality and other changes.

Stayed here for 1 night as part of the Jules Verne tour around Malawi. Very comfortable room overlooking the mountains. we ate out at the Protea Hotel in the 21 Club I think it is called. The food was excellent. One of the best meals I have eaten anywhere in the world. The price was exremely reasonable too. Other members of our group who ate in the Mount Soche said the food was very good there too. When we returned to our hotel we discovered the aircon unit was dripping water everywhere - all over the lamp and bedside table and the floor. Having contacted reception they sent someone up to look at it asap and he immediately arranged for us to sleep in the room next door. As this was quite late at night we were impressed. We didn't need to move any of our belongings so it worked out very well. Breakfast was excellent. My only regret was that we didn't stay in this hotel for 2 nights!!

We spent 7 days at the Sunbird Mt. Soche in Blantyre and were delighted with our stay. The staff, from the front desk, to the dining room, to room service, was excellent. We enjoyed our meals in the restaurants. Good food, great ambiance. The room met our expectations and while I agree that the rooms overlooking the gardens and pool are probably quieter, we did not experience a lot of noise overlooking downtown Blantyre. We liked the location too. It was easy to talke walks through the downtown area and it was only 4 blocks to a convenient supermarket.

This Hotel is extremely expensive and is barely of one star standard, the food was barely edible and the Hotel stank of bug spray and Urine. The bathroom facilities are similar to that of a run down camping site the bath was stained black with mildew and the carpets were filthy, the bed sheets were also unclean. The "fine dining" restaurant on the upper level charges and arm and a leg and is noisy with a pianist that shouts out of tune. There isn't a lot of choice in blantyre but find a hotel that is run by an international organisation they should have some standards. I have never stayed in such a terrible place. I returned home terribly ill. It says it's a sunbird hotel maybe when it was run by le meridien it was better.

I liked this hotel although that in part was because i was upgraded to a suite (really just two adjoining rooms - one the bedroom, the other fitted out as a living area.) Even so the rooms were high quality -especially the bathrooms which were of a much higher standard than the rather tired counterparts in the sister hotel in Lilongwe. The dining room is bright and you can take your breakfast out in the pleasant green terrace. Upstairs there is a decent restaurant. Business facilties are good with cheap internet access in the business center and laptop connections in the bedrooms. The staff at check in and check out are efficient but I think those in Lilongwe are friendlier, but maybe that is because I stayed there a bit longer. Overall this is a quality hotel whre you pay business rates, but maybe a half of what you would pay in Europe for a comparable hotel.

  • Liked — High quality everywhere
  • Disliked — A bit impersonal

Spent one week at the hotel on business. Rooms were comfortable, with good bathroom and beds, some slightly better than others. No balcony, rooms facing the garden and pool are quieter than those facing the road.
Food was fine - tap water from the room was safe for the whole party after being boiled once, there are tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Good buffet breakfast (full English and continental) and lunch (mains, salads, very good desserts), the evening menu in the restaurant downstairs isn't great but is good, if a bit pricey, on the 5th floor restaurant. Vegetarians adequately covered.
The hotel bar is like a corridor but there's a sports bar in the hotel as well.
Business centre - slow internet.
Staff were generally helpful and pleasant.
Pool was big (and freezing).
Shopping - there was a craft stall set up outside the reception every day, although prices can be a bit more expensive than the craft market one block away. Nothing else available in the hotel but bookshops, supermarket etc nearby.
