In the 4 years that we have guests in Malawi Sun Hotel the service is going backwards.
Ask for a special room, you don't get it. You take a shower and you can swim in the bathroom. Maintenance is also going backwards. Breakfast is poor.
Time to find something else.

The good things first: Good location, security seems adequate, staff in general friendly, food quite good.

BUT: At least some of the rooms not really in acceptable condition, with more than the usual wear and tear, mold on the walls, appliances very much 20th century. All this at a hefty price. There must be better places to stay in Blantyre. Definitely in the market segment this hotel is in.

Add to this: Extensive construction work going on all over the place. One of the larger structures with guestrooms is very close to the construction site. Which makes this part of the hotel not only very loud, but also dusty. The service in the restaurant is interesting even by the standards of a traveler somewhat experienced in the region. And due to the current management, you will not get a single drop of alcohol anywhere on the premises.

Room Tip: Do stay away from the construction site.

Had planned to stay for at least 2 nights but regretted and ended up staying only for one night with family--paid USD156 for a double room. The place is in need of an overhaul--repainting and renewal of furniture etc. You will come across dirty/soiled ceilings in some of the rooms, dirty curtains in need of laundry, non-functional bed lamps etc.Breakfast was cold and dry---some of the staff are friendly but beware of one pf the porters who will directly ask you for a tip which i considered annoying!

In short, if you have been there in 2013 you will agree...the standards have fallen at the hotel..even some of the structures, fences outside suggest that the place is slowly collapsing. So my suggestion is you can get better options at the same price in the city.

Whenever I am going to Blantyre I stay here only as they make you feel at home.
It is very popular even among locals for variety of food.

It may not be the most sophisticated hotel but whatever it lacks in those terms it definitely makes up in hospitality of its host and manpower.

People here are willing to go out of there way to help you in anyway they can.

do try the pizzas there, very homely

Room Tip: It is a two story multiple blocks. upper floor on block near restaurant is the best.

Staff very friendly with good housekeeping and laundry. Guests not made aware that this hotel had no bar and Halal prepared food for meals. Breakfast had no change in choice for the two weeks I was there. I had fried eggs and toast everyday, not by choice but poor selection
