Exploring Madagascar in 10 days

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 5, 2016
We had 10 days to explore as much of Madagascar as possible and Gary was extremely helpful in coming up with an itinerary for us. He responded very quickly to emails and gave great suggestions for sights to see. We did a two day tour of the Tsiribihina River with camping which was fantastic. Jimmy was our English speaking tour guide for the river and he was great. Highly recommend him and his team who treated us all like queens. They cooked us three delicious meals a day while camping, and setup all of the tent equipment. Tent equipment was great quality and we felt safe the entire time. We then spent two days in Morondava to see the Baobabs which was fantastic. Jimmy took us there at sunset and it was breathtaking. We spent 2 nights at Chez Maggie and the food was delicious and service was great. Like most places in Mada the electricity could go out at any point and it is better to order you meals before hand and then set a time to come for the meals which assures you won't be waiting very long for the food. Chez Maggie was clean, and great location right near the beach. We swam in the ocean and the pool which was nice. After that we went to Antsiarbe, Ambositra and Antananarivo where Gary setup all the hotels and some sight seeing. It included an English speaking driver which was nice. Overall an amazing experience and a great way to see the beautiful country of Madagascar!

Food is still very good. Staff as friendly as ever and always there to assist. This time stayed longer than three weeks which is quite a duration for a tourist in Morondava, but I planned to study during this time and succeeded. I also got discounts on all food and lodging due to duration of stay at Chez Maggie.
I mainly ate at Chez for the seafood and salads, I also visited Boabab Cafe for a burger and La Capaninna for pizza and pasta. Overall good value for money and a great break away.

Room tip: See the map on their website to see room location but email them to inquire. I have never stayed in chalets 2 and 3 but would like someday.

As some people have noted before there are some things in Mada that cannot be controlled. Power and water are sometimes not completely functional. Thankfully this hotel has planned for the inevitable. Our room was stocked with several full buckets of water for showers and flushing which came in very handy in the morning when I wanted to shower. Was excited for AC in the room but in the end the power only lasted for a couple of hours then when to backup power so only the fan would work.

We also waited for nearly 2 hours in the restaurant but was not that bad as we had wifi so could check email etc. Not that fast as it is shared but if you are alone you may get around ~1.5MB/sec. Some others came in a got their food right away. Tip for next time or if you read this is to order before during the day or at check-in and plan a time to eat and it will be ready. Gary, the owner was very friendly and spoke good English.

This place makes a nice visual first impression - the bungalows are generous in size and there is hot water with good pressure. There is also a nice swimming pool, though the colour is a bit murky...

This is sadly where our favourable impression of Chez Maggie ends. We arrived in the evening after a long journey from Antsirabe, to be greeted by a woman who didn't smile all evening and made us feel like an inconvenience. She also didn't tell us to leave the key if we wanted the room cleaned so it wasn't on the first day, and when I asked about it, the staff acted as though it was my mistake!

Dinner in the restaurant was just awful. We waited an hour for our starter, which was ok, then another 40 minutes for our mains, zebu and chips, which were inedible - tough, grizzly meat. When we asked the woman serving about it, all we got was a glare, and when I complained about the quality of the food, I was told to go and speak to the chef!!

We also made the mistake of having breakfast there one morning - a pathetic offering for 15000ar each.

Another important point is that it is very hot in Morondava and the air-con/fans in the room don't work all the time, turning off always between 3am-6am, which means you wake up very uncomfortable and hot. We were also not happy to find a number of cockroaches in our room during our stay - a first in the many hotels we have stayed in all over Madagascar.

Overall, a disappointing experience - we won't be coming back.

Absolute gem of a hotel, in a beautifully set up property. Done in blues and whites, with lovely little tables, chairs and beach umbrellas dotted around the property. Lounges set up around the beach front and a cute little restaurant at the front. Saw little wooden bungalows on the property, but we had a huge room with terrace overlooking the pool, two big beds and a table and chair, and lounges in the room. Decent food, and the staff all seemed to speak both English and French with a modicum of fluency. Very friendly, and WiFi service was decent in the reception/restaurant areas. Be careful on the beach though outside the fence though, locals seem to use the beach as a toilet and wait for high tide to wash the evidence away. Would definitely return.

I had limited time in Madagascar and didn't get the opportunity to do enough research prior to my trip. Gary, from Remote Rivers who also was my main point of contact at Chez Maggie, helped me with my trip planning every step of the way, including providing me with valuable advice on my stay in Tana as well as dealing with Air Madagascar ("Air Maybe") when my flight was pushed up a few hours earlier than originally scheduled. I also had a wonderful guide, Michele, the whole trip from picking me up from Morondava airport, to Avenue of the Baobabs and finally, making my way through both Big Tsingy and Small Tsingy which was a life-changing experience. Although I stayed only one night at Chez Maggie, it is a very comfortable place, the food was amazing, and the staffs were extremely helpful. Overall, I'm grateful for the personal attention to my trip and my custom itinerary was carefully crafted for my needs and timing throughout (including a picnic in the middle of Big Tsingy!). I would highly recommend Chez Maggie and Remote Rivers for planning your trip to Morondava and Madagascar! They provided immense help in assuring that my trip was both an enjoyable and a safe one. I am very pleased with my experience.

Greetings and many thanks. Although we had to make your plans quickly we're very glad all worked well for your visit! We'll pass along your comments to our staff here at the Chez Maggie and guides. Even though your time was limited happy we were able to include the areas of interest. We hope now that you've had a 'Taste of Madagascar' you'll be inspired to return when possible. There are so many great options throughout the year and of course we'll be ready to assist with suggestions and services throughout the island. When the time is right we'll look forward to hearing you!

Best for the Holidays & 2016!

Regards, Gary & Baholy
