“Beautifully set, relaxed lodge”
Reviewed October 9, 2011

Echo other recent reviews - lovely setting, drinks reasonably priced, service excellent and friendly. Rooms are welcoming and large and - when there is electricity - everything worked. The lodge is pretty remote and runs on a generator so there is no power overnight - remember to charge your camera while eating!!
Food was buffet style and stir frys were a theme. Well presented and pretty good for an open air buffet in the middle of nowhere!! Probably our favorite lodge of the three Sopa lodges we visited.
Bathrooms (as in Kenya generally) could be updated, but it all worked and was well cleaned. beds and linen good and the security guys who walked you back to the room usually found something (scorpion, snake, giraffe etc etc).
Europe it is not, enjoy the setting, have a beer (or G&T) at sundown and chill......

Room Tip: Ask for one nearer the reception, but then you miss the fun of walking through the bush!

I totally agree with all positive reviews. Lovely hotel, very nice staff, good food, swimming pool was clean, nice rooms (2) in separate lodges. This was all we wanted to start our safari trip and the best accomodation we stayed in.

This lodge was a real treat, located towards the top of the reserve. When you entered the reserve you knew you were going to be spending the night in the middle of wild life. All safari vehicles have to check in before entering the park. Make sure you take note of a little sign by the restrooms that says "Dedicated to Elsa". Notice people probably read that and do not remember who Elsa was. She was the lion cub that George and Joy Adamson raised and released,, yes,, in Samburu National Reserve. Who knows maybe that is one of her ancestories you will be witnessing eating its local catch.

As for the the resort, it has nice rooms,, which some were far some the main centered lodge which was a good thing,, this isn't a high rise hotel, nor would you want that experience. As the sun goes down on Samburu the local wild life can walk through the grounds of the hotel. They have security, local warriors from nearby tribes, that walk you to your rooms. They have all seen lions on the grounds but its not a regular occurrence.

The meals were good,, it was fun eating al la fresca for all meals and getting a chance to see birds and wildlife just steps from your dining table. We enjoyed our two day stay and found everything to be fine at this lodge. The staff could not have been any nicer and made this trip memorable.

You have to remember that these lodges are in the middle of nowhere and run on generators so on a slight ocassion, you could be without lights or hot water but not for long and if this little inconvience bothers you,, maybe traveling to game parks is not for you. We stayed in 3 game parks in Kenya and Tanzania and found the same minor issues with all of them and loved everyone.

Room Tip: If you have any difficulties walking around or if you are staying solo and fear the wildlife outside...

We spent 2 nights in Samburu Sopa Lodge in beginning of July 2011.
The hotel is amazing. We were there with a Smartours.com on Keyan Safari.
There are several free standing houses divided in 2 which are your hotel rooms.
Hotel is situated in the middle of Samburu National reserve so at night you have to be careful not to walk alone. There are different animals crossing hotel grounds including lions.
Hotel property is not fenced.
Couple of tips:
- After 10pm there is no electricity. Hotel runs on generators (you don't hear them at all) so they try to conserve energy. I like that. Hotel provides flashlights in the rooms.
- There is no A/C in the rooms. Hotel is situated around 2000m above the sea level so it is not that hot at night, plus it is rather dry area.
- Swimming pool is not clean, so don't count on swimming. You come here on safari, not on swimming trip so that was ok with me.
- They have nice restaurant and bar area, so you can order drinks anytime.
I did like local bear "TUSCER"
I hope you will enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Our room was reserved by our tour company.

Samburu is magical and it always feels like Avalon to me. I conduct my intuition training in the reserve and it is every time a special experience.
I mostly stay at Sopa Lodge, because of the good value for money and their location on the top of a mountain. When going on game drives you often get a good look at Mt. Kenya and Enkai, the mountain where according to the Samburu god lives. The dining area of the lodge faces into the bush and is next to a little water whole. I often heard that they have great sightings there, but hearing and seeing yourself is just different. I find it hard to think of anything that could beat watching a wild leopard from you dining table.
